Challenge 25 in supermarkets

After school run nipped into well known supermarket for groceries needed for dinner and a couple of bottles of prosecco.

Will admit I was dressed casually and with no makeup but was asked for ID at checkout. After a rummage in bag I realised I didn't have my drivers license.

Manager called over and they both admitted that I was clearly over 18 but unsure if over 25, im 32!

If they can agree I'm above the legal age(and then some!) then why refuse to serve customers?

Aibu to assume if they're happy I'm well above 18 but unsure how close (or over!) 25 I am then they should still be able to serve you as the legal age is 18?.

Surely some common sense needs to applied.

Many years ago our local shop was done for selling lottery tickets to underage persons - they weren't allowed to sell lottery tickets for a certain period.

I went to said shop and purchased some alcohol. Which they duly sold me, no problems, no asking for ID. I then decided to buy some lottery ticket and they asked me for ID! Cue me looking very confused as they obviously thought I was over 18 to buy alcohol but under 16 to buy a lottery ticket!

I can't remember what happened because it was ages ago, and I'm never asked for ID now so must look my age!

FryOneFatManic I realise that but I was a parent buying medication for her child?? If I had had a 3 year old with me and asked for calpol it would have been sold to me - what's the difference?

Gruntfuttock that is weird about the co-codamol, surely either it's available OTC or it's prescription only., not for sale at pharmacist's discretion? Did you give an alarming answer to one of the questions ( eg like when you are buying ibuprofen and they ask if you have a stomach ulcer? )

Nurofen and Calpol can only be sold to over 16s as well.
