not a high as such just if your feeling low, does buying things help lift you a bit?

it does with me, luckily I can afford to buy treats here and there, I get quite a lot of enjoyment from window shopping, but when I feel low, a little treat like a new make up item, or perfume, or a new dress or some sort of clothing does lift me

I guess it's not too much of an issue as I don't spend what I can't afford so not getting madly in debt

but is this normal
do you get this lift?

Its mainly treat items that get enjoyment from, but even food shopping lifts me a little bit
I like the feeling from a nice full fridge

Ohhh I love it, get a buzzy flush being handed a carrier bag full of nice things. Doesnt even have to be for me. Just anything!

CatSwag · 13/05/2015 17:20

its interesting how nearly everyone, even if they don't get a lift from buying clothes, get a lift from buying other things, house stuff, apple products, stationary
btw if you love stationary do you have really smart/fancy handwriting ?

no, don't get a lift from buying any of those things, and don't own quite a few of them. And I expect I'm one of many.

bought a notebook the other day because I need to write things down. Wasn't really the most exciting event of my life!

gingertofu · 13/05/2015 17:30

I do but in moderation. I'm terrible at throwing things out so some days I won't be interested in shopping as it'll just mean accumulating more stuff. Other days I get an itch to buy something and I look forward just to buying mundane things like every day toiletries or household stuff. But I like the feeling of coming home with something that's ticked all the right boxes for me, especially if it's been on sale Grin.

propelusagain · 13/05/2015 17:30

I don't "get a lift" from buying anything. Shopping is not my thing. It's a necessity , no more.

propelusagain · 13/05/2015 17:31

To those who do love shopping? How do you fund this hobby? Do you all have huge salaries?

BertieBotts · 13/05/2015 17:49

I do, but I dislike the process of shopping for shoes because I am too fussy and never find things that I like.

I like "stuff", it really pleases me to have nice "stuff" rather than the cheapest thing which will do the job. DH always goes for the cheapest thing that does the job and it drives me crazy. I don't feel the need to have loads, or the best or most expensive, and I don't go shopping that often, but when I do I really enjoy it, and love going through everything when I get home too. I'm pretty good at not buying things that I don't need, but I won't ever be minimalist, it doesn't appeal to me at all.

I do like stationery but my handwriting is awful, and changes on a regular basis. I don't often buy it because I don't use it, but I like browsing.

MadisonMontgomery · 13/05/2015 18:22

I loooooove shopping - for anything really. Especially tracking down the exact thing I want - looking at reviews & buying the best version etc. I need a new hobby!

CointreauVersial · 13/05/2015 18:32

Food shopping leaves me cold.

But I do get a high from buying clothes or stuff for the house.

Weirdly I get quite a buzz from returning stuff as well - it feels like negative spending, even though I bought the item in the first place. Grin

HamishBamish · 13/05/2015 18:39

Definitely. No from clothes shopping particularly (although this probably has to do with me being overweight and not feeling particularly happy with anything I wear right now), but I do love every other kind of shopping, particularly books and food.

EponasWildDaughter · 13/05/2015 18:46

I like shopping, what ever it is i'm buying, but i LOVE buying shoes and i love buying toiletries, ie: make up, skin care, nice hair care products.

Really enjoy researching and finding the perfect new, quirky or difficult to find stuff online. (just found and bought a particular hair colour lifter/toner from America! Got to wait 2 weeks for it. Sweet impatience!).

gingertofu · 13/05/2015 19:02

I don't think you need to be rich or have a huge salary to enjoy shopping. Even a day out picking up things in cheap shops can be fun, and sometimes I like buying fairly essential things like shampoo and kitchen items.

I hate shopping, and put it off as long as possible. I've never understood the concept of retail therapy.

TheMagnificientFour · 13/05/2015 19:26

No.
It did use to do that .... when I was in my twenties.
Then I realised it was just empty and I was just 'buying a dream'. Nowdays, I prefer to look at the reason why I'm feeling down and dealing with that instead.

Fwiw, I find that shopping for clothes for example very frustrating. I shop because I need it. And I know by experience that I'm unlikely to find what I'm looking for (I will find things that I don't really need though. Things I'm not going to buy).
So most of my shopping is done via the internet. At least i can findvwhat i'm after.

Fabulassie · 13/05/2015 19:35

Yes, I do get a bit of a buzz from shopping. However, I can do it cheaply. You can but quite a lot at Primark for under £50. But my biggest buzzes are cosmetic purchases at Boots or a department store. I have run out of cosmetics to buy, and that makes me sad.

GreenPetal94 · 13/05/2015 19:35

no

BabyDubsEverywhere · 13/05/2015 19:39

I get a huge buzz... but I am Bipolar so its not good for me!

CakeNinja · 13/05/2015 20:02

I detest 'shopping trips' other than Christmas shopping. If I need things for myself I usually order online.
I cant think of anything worse than trying clothes on in shops for fun, or window shopping.
But I do love it when my internet purchases arrive!

DowntownFunk · 13/05/2015 22:57

I get a much better high from shoplifting.

DowntownFunk · 13/05/2015 22:58

^

that was a wee joke there Grin

Binkybix · 14/05/2015 08:14

I don't really enjoy the process of shopping - especially clothes because I always think everything looks hideous on me and get down. I could potter around a garden centre for hours though, without buying a thing!!!

HildaOgdensCoffeeTable · 14/05/2015 08:21

I don't get a lift at all unless its something I really like, but then it's the having a nice new top or whatever rather than spending that gives me the lift. I find it a bit stressful, certainly not enjoyable. We had very little money when I was growing up & now it feels wrong to just spend.

daisychain01 · 14/05/2015 08:34

I go through phases of enjoying shopping.

I love going shopping with an aim to buy something and coming away with exactly what I want. Often the customer service can make or break it.

Last night I decided to go to the Mall after work.

£30 gold studs from Goldsmiths, fantastic customer service, very attentive and friendly 10/10

Couldn't find Charles Worthington shampoo in Boots, really nice assistant walking me over to it (new packaging which was why I missed it!), she didn't just point "over there" which is annoying. 10/10

Nice pair of yoga pants in Marks. My size, good 10/10

So not a huge amount of money but it was a really positive experience and made me want to repeat it, unlike the times they don't have my size, or the assistant shows they CBA, or I can't find what I like!

Bicarb · 14/05/2015 10:28

I love getting things online - I have Amazon Prime which is great as I often forget I need things and can get them next day.

I get everything delivered to work, and it's so nice when I get back from lunch and there's something waiting for me!

Getting parcels is one of my favorite things - it's like my birthday every day!
