I spend my money on make up for my husband. So where does that leave me on the intelligent------thick scale??

I have recently started making my own clothes - now THAT is liberating Smile

I spend my money on make up for my husband. So where does that leave me on the intelligent------thick scale??

Do you mean make up for yourself to look nice for your husband? Or make up actually for your husband?!

FarFromAnyRoad · 10/05/2015 09:52

I don't spend overly much on make up but what I do spend is well worth it. If I went out without make up the Zombie Police would arrest me and have me bang to rights on 'Going out and about looking like the undead without due care and attention' - and doubtless many other charges too!

formerbabe · 10/05/2015 09:56

I wear make up every day and have done since I was a teenager. Many years ago though I went to work with no make up on...my boss took me aside to ask if I was ill!

VelvetRose · 10/05/2015 09:58

I really don't think that many people actually do spend huge amounts of money on make up. I certainly know very few. I know what you mean if you are suggesting that women feel they "have" to look a certain way. I object to that but in fact I think the vast majority who wear lots of make up and buy lots of clothes enjoy doing so.

My DW is a boyish lesbian. She's certainly not constricted by social expectations of how she should look and she buys loads of clothes!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 10/05/2015 09:59

I'm one of those people I won't even take the bins out unless I look like I've stepped off a yacht. It's just my way.
I have dresses in every Colour, shoes in match, bags in every colour, jackets in every colour, nail varnish in every colour, earrings to match every outfit.

SkodaLabia · 10/05/2015 10:01

I spend precisely one arm and one leg on skincare, but not that much on make up. I buy Levi jeans because the cut suits me, but don't buy high end for anything else.

If I was thin I'd spend loads on clothes and ponce about in very little.

VelvetRose · 10/05/2015 10:02

I always tell my dd that make up etc is fine to use if you're doing it because you want to and it's fun not because you feel you must.

formerbabe · 10/05/2015 10:02

If I was thin I'd spend loads on clothes and ponce about in very little.

Ditto!

raawwhh · 10/05/2015 10:05

Wow, is your camel toe painful, OP, with your judgy pants being hoicked so far up and all?

Its simple for me - I have horrendous skin and the more expensive skin care regimes make my skin look lovely - the cheaper ones, not so much. They also last a lot longer.

My more expensive cosmetics last longer in the bottle and stay longer on my face - so worth the extra money. I like to wear make up for me - I don't need to but I like the whole getting made up.

Clothes - I'm in the process of losing weight so in cheap clothes at the moment, but they are all shite. They fall apart and look scruffy. I would rather spend more on items of clothing that will last.

I do these things because I enjoy them. I've always been a girly girl and enjoy dressing up. However, I'm not reliant on them, I can go out without make up on without having a nervous breakdown.

kali110 · 10/05/2015 10:05

I spend money on makeup. For years iv had bad skin. It made me feel a bit better.now its a lot better im ok not having to wear foundation all the time. I do spend money on eyeshadow, nailvarnish, lip balm and gloss.
I don't need to, i want to!
I enjoy it!
My bf loves me in makeup or out ( he can't tell the difference anyway)
I don't do it for anyone but me.
I feel great when i do my makeup.

ArgyMargy · 10/05/2015 10:06

I spend a large amount on skincare and monthly facials. Helps me ignore the fact that I'm getting old. Pure vanity. But I can afford it so YABU.

RitaCrudgington · 10/05/2015 10:06

I think my bank account would care if I wore jeans and Tshirt every day, because I'd be sacked sharpish.

I spend a fair amount on clothes but hardly anything on makeup - regardless it's not even close to "all my money" I don't know anyone who spends money they can't really afford on clothes etc, generally speaking the women who spend it have it to spend, and the ones who don't have it do without.

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 10/05/2015 10:07

If I was thin I'd spend loads on clothes and ponce about in very little.

Ditto! Can't wait til I'm thin again (32 weeks pregnant!), so I can ponce around in flimsy bits of fabric Wink

kali110 · 10/05/2015 10:10

Raa, yes i noticed that!
I yucked out all the cheap skincare and just buy 3 expensivish (sp) skincare ranges.
I use bare mineral tinted primer and used to wear their, foundation but found i can use normal foundations also.

WhoisLucasHood · 10/05/2015 10:11

What an odd thread to start. I don't know anyone who spends all their money on cosmetics. How others choose to spend their income is of no consequence to me, unless I'm asked to loan them money. Everyone has their spending priorities, I don't always understand why he spends on his car or why she will only buy named brands but it's good that everyone is different, no?

mrsmeerkat · 10/05/2015 10:11

I look shit in Jeans and no make up. I earn a good salary. If I was broke of course I wouldn't spend money on shit.

I love getting a shellac and brow tint. But I work hard. Stressful job. It's nice to look nice.

My (spare) money is on this thread being used for yet another Daily Fail/Mumsnet researched article.

Dowser · 10/05/2015 11:25

My passion is clothes. Dresses in particular.

At 60 odd I feel like I've finally found my style. Having not worn a dress for 30 years I'm now awash with them. I think they flatter my big bad ass better than trousers

I had to wear trousers to see my osteopath the other day and felt like I'd crawled from under a stone.

Where to put them is becoming a huge problem.

Face cream I make my own using lavera skin cream as my base and going from there.

AliceLidl · 10/05/2015 11:30

I spend all my money on books, craft supplies, and Fentiman's Rose Lemonade.

I buy the occasional mascara and remember the days when all my make up came free once a fortnight on the cover of Just 17.

Chopsypie · 10/05/2015 11:30

I love make up. Not because I feel like I 'need it' (and so fuck if I did) but because it's fun.
It's face paint for grown ups.

Also as much as you are entitled to your opinion and think we are 'thick' I think your opinions is narrow minded and stupid, and conclude you must be too.

I think people should be free to spend their money on whatever they like without being labelled "thick".

I spend approx £20-30 a month on clothes and around £10-20 on cosmetics. Nearer the £20 mark during the months that I need to buy foundation and moisturiser.

I've spent hundreds over the years in my search for the perfect foundation to cover my rosacea and match my very pale skin. Until I discovered a £12.99 drugstore brand. Now I don't need to spend £30 a time when replacing my foundation.

Wearing make-up everyday (unless I'm just lazing about at home) makes me happy and confident. I've had rosacea on my nose and cheeks since I was 11. I have PCOS which gives me acne breakouts. Wearing make-up means I can go outside with confidence and talk to people without thinking they're staring at my bad skin. When I have make-up on you can't tell I have crap skin underneath. Or am I just thick? Should I stop wearing make-up, lose my confidence and keep my head down when people speak to me? OR I could spend my money on whatever I bloody want and be happy.

Some people spend hundreds on shoes and handbags, some spend money on a hobby, some dine in fancy restaurants. I do none of those things. So if I want to spend £50 a month on things that make me appear "thick", I will.
