I also don't feel happy with my DD seeing me put on makeup. It is a shame women feel they have to do it yet men don't. I wear a little every so often but I'm lucky that it doesn't radically change the way I look. At 40 my skin is finally clear of spots and blemishes and I naturally have decent eyelashes.

LynetteScavo · 10/05/2015 07:16

I don't spend all my money on cosmetics - I do wear make up and look forward to the day I can spend more money on cosmetics rather than paying for my DC. There are some fab products out there!

PunkrockerGirl · 10/05/2015 07:24

I work bloody hard for my money and will spend my disposable income as I see fit. I have an absolute passion for fashion and makeup. It's not harming anyone else, so what's the problem? Confused
I think also when you have to wear uniform to work, it's good to put on nice things the rest of the time if that's what you want.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 10/05/2015 07:33

I spend a fortune on skincare.
My jeans, however, are frim Asda and cost £8 and I own precisely 2 pairs of shoes. I am not remotely interested in clothes.
My household has one TV and none of its members has any of the ££££££s electronic stuff.
Why don't you tell us where some if YOUR personal money goes so we can comment?

sleeplessbunny · 10/05/2015 07:38

Everyone can choose to spend their money how they like. However, some women feel that wearing makeup is a necessity, not a choice, is that the problem you are getting at OP?

For anyone who feels obliged to wear makeup, I agree spending £££s on it must be galling. Just another cost of being a woman. But if it's a genuine choice then meh, NOYB.

propelusagain · 10/05/2015 07:40

You are the mug OP. I buy what little make up I wear in poundland. No more than £10 a year.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 10/05/2015 07:45

Another one here who hardly spends on clothes and make up. I can understand people buying both, but can't understand why people buy the extortionately expensive brands. Toileteries too. In most cases, a £1 shampoo is the same as a £20 one. If your hair isn't that great (mine) no amount of money will fix it.

But it's choices. We spend a lot on going out, concert tickets etc, and my DDs like Apple products. Hardly a worthy way to spend money, so obviously am not judging others.

ahbollocks · 10/05/2015 08:03

I spend alot on make up and perfumes, but I dont drink or smoke or get out to restaurants much. I dont see how it affects you tbh

PunkrockerGirl · 10/05/2015 08:06

And I'm not thick, OP. Far from it.

Bursarymum · 10/05/2015 08:07

I don't understand the thread. But since I'm a self confessed vain person then I probably wouldn't. Looking polished is definitely part of my identity. When I've had the odd 'time off' after having a baby I've felt very miserable.

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 10/05/2015 08:10

I spend money on clothes (including jeans and t shirts!) because I like clothes. I don't wear a huge amount of make up but just buy a few quality things to replace what I've used up.
Well within budget, out of choice and therefore don't think I'm particularly 'crackers' thanks.

SinglePringle · 10/05/2015 08:11

I LOVE spending my money on cosmetics and shit!

I've got an eyewatering stash of expensive makeup, hundreds of shoes, stacks of handbags and three double wardrobes full of fabulous, colourful clothes.

And I've a first class degree and an interesting job where I'm the boss, so I don't think I'm thick.

Limer · 10/05/2015 08:11

I can never remember what other people wore when I last saw them, so I don't flatter myself that they remember what I wore. I have a limited work wardrobe (most of it over 10 years old) and weekends are jeans/jumpers.

I don't wear make-up, and buy shampoo/face-cream/shower gel etc. from Lidl.

MerynFuckingTrant · 10/05/2015 08:11

Um YABU. People can spend their money on whatever they want.

I don't wear makeup and I wear mostly jeans and T- shirts. Does that make me super intelligent?

treaclesoda · 10/05/2015 08:12

My mother never wore makeup or perfume, and wasn't interested in fashion or anything. I never saw her take much interest in her appearance over and above having a shower and washing her hair every day. I have much older sisters who also were not interested in fashion or wearing makeup.

I am the black sheep of my family. From a young age I have loved makeup and fashion. I don't spend a fortune on them, can't afford to, but I love reading about them and treating myself occasionally.

AlternativeTentacles · 10/05/2015 08:14

I don't use cosmetics, I buy two pairs of jeans [I teach gardening so go through jeans at the rate of two a year], two smart dresses and one pair of black trousers to go under the dresses when it is chilly - a year from new. All my other clothes are from the decent charity shop.

If other people want to spend their cash on make up then that's their choice, surely?

But women don't have to wear make up. If they choose to do so then great but we do not HAVE to!

sebsmummy1 · 10/05/2015 08:17

Well yes you would be a bit thick if you spent all your money on cortical and fashion. What would you eat?!

I must spend about £30 a year on cosmetics and about £100 on new clothes. So my spending is hardly supporting the vanity market.

sebsmummy1 · 10/05/2015 08:18

*cosmetics (wtf does cortical mean!!?)

BeaufortBelle · 10/05/2015 08:21

Puts fingers in ears and does a little dance.

I wear foundation, concealer, lippy, mascara and blusher every single day.
I use good skincare stuff
I love a good bubble bath
My weakness is perfume
I have my hair cut and coloured every six weeks
I buy myself nice clothes

I work full time and the above represents a small percentage of my monthly spend. I spend money on those things because they make me feel good and I enjoy feeling good.

I'll spend my money for which I work very hard exactly as I please, when I please.

NRomanoff · 10/05/2015 08:21

I wear make up as and when I fancy it. Some days I just can't be bothered. Some days I can't wait to put it on, although I don't wear alot. I don't spend all my money on cosmetics or clothes and don't know anyone who does.

Even my best friend, doesn't spend all her money and she loves make up and wear it everyday without fail. She treats it like art and adores bright colours.

Although daily the whats app selfies with 'guess what the name of the lipstick colour I am wearing today' is a bit wearing after 3 years. Grin Thats unreasonable.

sebsmummy1 · 10/05/2015 08:22

See I would rather our family money got spent on nice food and things for my son. It really does depend on your lifestyle and priorities. Plus your amount of disposable income!!

pinkdelight · 10/05/2015 08:23

I wear make-up maybe once a month and live in jeans and tees, and look pretty good I reckon. Ain't no model, but wouldn't want to be. Am heartened by all the similar PPs who don't conform to the OP's stereotype. I hate it when people assume all women are crazy about shoes and bags. Shoes and bags shoes and bags! Christ. Trainers and a backpack are fine for me, thanks.

PutWittyUsernameHere · 10/05/2015 08:24

This thread smells funny to me...

HagOtheNorth · 10/05/2015 08:27

Personal choice though, innit?
I don't. You might.
Neither choice is thick, unless you are looking for a miraculous cure for soemthing you think is wrong with your appearance, and that's not thick, it's worrying.

GemmaTeller · 10/05/2015 08:30

to think that we're being a bit thick spending all our money on cosmetics

Well, yes, YOU and whoever of your acquaintances you're including in that sweeping statement are being a bit thick if there's no money left for food, heating, bills, rent, mortgage etc.

Do you actually know anyone who spends ALL their money on cosmetics?

I spend about £30 a year on cosmetics, so that's a miniscule percentage of my disposable income.
