I voted Conservative, and am happy to admit it - why don't other Tory voters feel the same?

I voted Conservative, and am delighted with the election result. However no one else seems to admit to being a Tory voter, but there are clearly lots of us around. I told someone at work about my voting preferences - she looked at me as if I'd just killed a puppy.

DH commented that being left-wing is a more fashionable view, even if you don't agree with left-wing politics.

I think he has a point. And I get heartily sick of people who brag about being brought up on a council estate, holding it up as a badge of honour, assuming this gives more weight to their opinions than those of us who come from a different sort of background. It's some weird, inverted snobbery thing.

I totally agree with David Cameron's comments about wanting to ensure a good life for those of us who are prepared to work for it. What's so wrong with that????

And for that matter, do you always ask your customers personal questions? I can't imagine a shop worker/manager/owner asking where I work.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/05/2015 21:18

I bought new pyjamas out of my DLA last weekend because I'm having major surgery on Monday. Should I be lying starkers in my hopsital bed all next week?

FFS, some people are ridiculous beyond words!

ShinyS1 · 09/05/2015 21:20

Because there is a difference between pisstakers and people in genuine need. There needs to be a system in place that can separate the two. I highly doubt that Cameron will cut benefits to those genuinely in need.

eeniemeeniemineymo · 09/05/2015 21:20

Yes, frankly, if you referred to it as your "payday".

I pay my tax and NI, have done since the age of 16. I am happy for benefits to pay for the basic living needs, but if the common mentality is that it becomes "payday". No, it is totally wrong isn't it?

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 09/05/2015 21:21

Why wouldn't Tax credits be cut or go altogether? Shiny they are a benefit after all and cuts have to be made. I'm just bracing myself for when it happens.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/05/2015 21:21

If someone asked me where I worked or got my money from when I was paying for my stuff I'd complain in the store and to head office! I can't believe the bloody cheek, tbh. Hmm

CupidStuntSurvivor · 09/05/2015 21:23

So the word 'payday' got your back up? The way she refers to it to a nosey shop manager in order to not have to advertise 'I got my benefits today and am finally able to buy new clothes'? That's beyond pathetic. Just another excuse for yet another benefit bashing thread.

ShinyS1 · 09/05/2015 21:24

Tax credits will not be cut, certainly they won't be got rid of altogether. Show me where the Tories have said they will. I have family members on tax credits who voted Tory!

TheFairyCaravan · 09/05/2015 21:25

Bully for fucking you being able to work since you were 16!

Guess what? I did to until I became too disabled due to a botched operation and poor treatment by the NHS. Does that make you a better person than me? No it doesn't. You're an accident, illness or similar incident away from being disabled yourself.

My DH is 50 he's worked since he was 16, he's a higher rate tax payer he didn't vote Tory because he's seen how badly they have treated people. He certainly doesn't go round looking down his nose at people who are on benefits or less able than him.

eeniemeeniemineymo · 09/05/2015 21:26

No, the customer approached the till full of the joys of spring as it was "payday". She was buying stuff for a holiday with the girls as she was going away on a girls holiday.

Whilst packing the items she was telling me all about the holiday and how many of them were going. Obviously I was wrong to assume that someone who can purchase over £300 of goods was working!!

We both work, I cannot remember the last time we purchased clothes for ourselves to that value. Like most of our friends, our lives have been a financial struggle for the last five years.

bumbleymummy · 09/05/2015 21:26

£300 worth of clothes. I can't remember the last time I spent that on clothes - if ever!

Wood lice - aren't there plans to increase the amount of 'free' childcare?

TheFairyCaravan · 09/05/2015 21:27

Show us where the Tories said they would cut anything Shiny. They didnt, they just said they were going to make £12bn of cuts, it stands to reason that includes Tax Credits.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/05/2015 21:28

Drip, drip, drip, drip, drip! Hmm

run2 · 09/05/2015 21:28

People how voted Tory care alot more than the millions who couldn't be arsed at all. Where was the non voters concern for society?

But we're not talking to or about those folk are we?

PrincessShcherbatskaya · 09/05/2015 21:29

'Lazy fuckers on tax credits'

Charming. If you think outside your daily mail box you might see that tax credits are essential because there is no living wage in this country. It is not possible to live on a minimum wage so there has to be some supplementation. If you want to get angry get angry with the companies and industry in this country that refuse to pay a living wage. If they did then tax credits would not be necessary. You might also like to ponder that these lazy fuckers also pay tax and are contributing right back into the system

The trouble with Tory politics is that they are very 'I'm alright Jack so fuck the rest of them'.
My family are actually better off under conservative rule but this is not the society I wish to live in.

FuzzyWizard · 09/05/2015 21:29

You have not a fucking clue why that woman receives benefits. Who on earth do you think you are that you get to judge her? What possible difference can it make if people on benefits refer to being "paid"? Perhaps she hadn't wanted to share the fact that she claims benefits with the whole world. Maybe benefits claimants should wear a badge or something so that society can monitor their purchasing habits and nosy fuckers working in shops can judge them without having to go to the effort of asking inappropriate questions of their customers?

CupidStuntSurvivor · 09/05/2015 21:29

I'm going on holiday this year too eenie. Bet that pisses you right off.

Still curious as to how many of your customers get such a personal question? Surely if she's full of the joys of spring talking about her holiday, you ask where she's going, not where she works? Honestly, I don't believe you for a second.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 09/05/2015 21:31

And neither have they said that they won't. It's what they aren't saying that worries me.

Of course they wouldn't have said they'll cut them before the election. Do you reckon your rellys on Tax credits would still have voted for them.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/05/2015 21:32

No Fuzzy if you've ever claimed a benefit it should be tattooed on your forehead so everyone knows what a scrounging sponger you are or have been. It should never be forgotten! Wink

CupidStuntSurvivor · 09/05/2015 21:33

Shiny, if you don't believe that Tories are going to cut the benefits of those who really need it, are you under the impression that there are so many people taking the piss out of the system that by targeting only those people, they'll save £12billion?

eminthebigsmoke · 09/05/2015 21:34

Thank you wonkylegs - so many people seem to think that hospitals and schools are the end of it. We have a whole infrastructure to support which absolutely everyone uses.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/05/2015 21:36

I've just come back from Fuerteventura eenie, we might go again later in the year or we might go to Cape Verde. Try not to froth too much!

ShinyS1 · 09/05/2015 21:36

TheFairyCaravan - they won't get rid of working tax credits, and it's highly unlikely that they will cut them. Obviously I can't be 100% certain, but I feel 98% certain.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/05/2015 21:37

I wouldn't be certain about anything Shiny Dave said he was going to look after the disabled in 2010, look what happened there!

eeniemeeniemineymo · 09/05/2015 21:38

We have a lot of office workers nearby and we had an offer on shirts, blouses and both men and womens work wear. It was around lunchtime and we are city centre so it was a busy time. So if a customer mentions payday I am going to ask where they work to see if they are interested in the offer.

I dont care who on MN is going on holiday quite frankly, I am shocked though if the benefit system is paying enough for people to live on and go on a holiday during peak times.
