I bet they don't give a flying monkeys for anyone coming under attack by the Tories. The poor, disabled and tennants.

I have felt close to tears all day because I know what a conservative majority means for so many in this country.

Well done Loopylala it is not easy making improvements in the face of budget cuts and you should be proud of your work.

I do think that the NHS is under immense strain no matter what party takes power - but I feel the Labour manifesto for health was unrealistic.

The fact remains more voters wanted the Conservatives than the other parties. That is how an election works. And because we are slightly more to the right than some posters here does not mean we don't give a shit about others. I'm surprised by how blinkered some posters are as if voting Tory means you don't care. I guess a lot of people in the UK don't care then!

Charis1 · 09/05/2015 01:39

I haven't read the whole thread, just wanted to come here and say I am a single mother living on a council estate, I belong to an ethnic minority and have a disability.

I voted Tory because I think they are the way forward to strength and prosperity.

Nothing worth doing is easy,

The whole mindset of entitlement, getting something for nothing, expectations and demands is a drain on the whole population.

There is very little real hardship in this country.

Food banks are a new thing. Previously to their existence there were other charities, and support. I was given the food donated to the church harvest festival once. i have donated food in various ways to many people.

There is nothing new about individuals and families going through cycles of good time and hard times.

There is something pathetic about the the whole idea that your personal happiness and prospects are dependent on your income, and benefits.

No one in this country has starved to death, or is going to. No one in this family has to be mal nourished, although some are, this is down to personal or parental life style choice, not lack of resources.

????????????????????????
Well put.

SnowBells · 09/05/2015 01:46

^^Those weird question marks were meant to be clapping hands!!!

Queenofwands · 09/05/2015 01:53

If you don't have any friends or family who are poor and/or vulnerable then you won't understand what has been happening for the last five years. Trust the arch bishop of Canterbury and his opinion. He has no axe to grind. I keep thinking of Mumsnet in the 1800's ....." I am sick of seeing the poor drinking gin "....... "

Bogeyface · 09/05/2015 01:57

No one in this family has to be mal nourished, although some are, this is down to personal or parental life style choice, not lack of resources.

You are wrong.

Despite working 45+ hours a week each, we only got through shock redundancy thanks to help from my baby boomer parents.

Walk a mile in someone elses shoes before you judge them. The reason the country is in such a fucked up state is thanks to Thatcher, Cameron is compounding it and will continue to do so. But hey, why not blame those who didnt have the abilities or opportunities that you had......it means you can sleep at night doesnt it?

Charis1 · 09/05/2015 02:03

There is absolutely no reason what so ever for anyone in this country to be malnourished, That is a fact.

Miss60 · 09/05/2015 02:12

Not unhappy about Tory win..can't wait until Dickhead Obama is swept from the WhiteHouse.

Bogeyface · 09/05/2015 02:19

There is absolutely no reason what so ever for anyone in this country to be malnourished, That is a fact.

I completely agree. So perhaps you could explain why working families find themselves in a situation where they need to use to use food banks to feed their children?

SnowBells · 09/05/2015 02:24

Miss60

Are you American? You do know that Britain's Tory party is more akin to the Democrats than the Republicans, no? Labour is far, far, far more left than the Democrats which pretty much shifts the centre more to the left than it is in the U.S.

I am saying this as someone who has never voted Labour but who would never vote for the Republicans either.

Charis1 · 09/05/2015 02:31

food banks are new. No one starved to death before food banks started, they wouldn't starve to death if they stopped existing either.

I work, I've struggled to pay food and household bills. I might have missed a few meals here and there, but not my children. Food is cheap, and all children have child benefit.

This is what I am saying. Any working adult running their own home is going to have lean times. Particularly when you are young, and first set up.

These days there is an expectation and demand for huge amount of space, private kitchen and bathroom, etc, and constant luxury food every day.

but it takes time and hard work in life to get to a point where you have earnt those things. There is and should be a stage of your life BEFORE that, and for most working people there is. There are also cycles of lean times throughout your life.

This is not a problem, this is normal life, this is not a source of anger, or unhappiness, it does not impinge on the quality of your family life, relationships or personal happiness in any way, except those who have such a sense of entitlement and chip on their shoulder they cannot just get on and enjoy life.

Bogeyface · 09/05/2015 03:01

I will ask again

So perhaps you could explain why working families find themselves in a situation where they need to use to use food banks to feed their children?

Bogeyface · 09/05/2015 03:14

food banks are new. No one starved to death before food banks started, they wouldn't starve to death if they stopped existing either.
Food banks are not new sadly, I wish they were. And yes, people DID starve to death before they existed. Check your history.

I work, I've struggled to pay food and household bills. I might have missed a few meals here and there, but not my children. Food is cheap, and all children have child benefit.
Food is only cheap if you can afford it, and CB is not paid to all.

Any working adult running their own home is going to have lean times. Particularly when you are young, and first set up.

There is a massive difference between "lean times" and not being able to feed your children thanks to relying on top up benefits because your employer doesnt pay a living wage.

These days there is an expectation and demand for huge amount of space, private kitchen and bathroom, etc, and constant luxury food every day.

A private bathroom and kitchen within a family home is not a luxury its a necessity. What is luxury food? 3 meals a day? Define this please.

There are many, many reasons. Yes, austerity might be partly to blame, but it is also due to many other things.

Energy and fuel costs, for example, will be fairly similar between comfortable households and a poorer one. Even now that fuel costs have gone down since last year's oil price crash, it's still higher than years ago. Even we feel that, and we have a combined income in the lower six digits. Much of the cost of fuel is tax. Yet, I still have to find one government willing to slash it down.

Budgeting and cooking skills have fallen - many people just don't budget (from what I hear, women used to learn this in home economics years ago) or can only eat easy-to-make food. A bucket of home-made soup that is frozen to be consumed over several days is cheaper than a dozen cans of cheap food.

A culture of credit. If you're paying money to service interest rates... that might be the difference between food or no food.

The list can go on... things that have nothing to do with austerity, but which combined can creat a whole lotta mess.

Canyouforgiveher · 09/05/2015 04:13

President Obama can't be "swept from the White House". He isn't running for election. A president can only serve two terms in the US.

You don't know much about american politics, do you Miss 60?

Fairylea · 09/05/2015 07:19

The thing I really don't understand is why people seem only too eager to take away from the poorest whilst ignoring the large companies and very high earners who tax evade. To me that is a crime that is largely ignored under a Tory government in favour of the constant welfare cutting propaganda that is pushed into the media.

It's not a case of the country being short of money so let's cut welfare, it should be a case of higher taxes for those who earn more and making sure that companies who owe tax are paying it. If they would do that then they wouldn't need to make so many cuts to welfare.

For what it's worth our family personally is probably better off under the Tories. But I don't think that people should vote based on their life being better just for them- we are a society and our government should look to provide for the poorest and most vulnerable before anyone else.

The conservatives have made everyone think the UK is full of people choosing a life on benefits. I have no doubt that is true for a select few however most people would do anything to avoid relying on them and have been through the most horrendous cuts and sanctions in the last 5 years with more to come.

I really think if the conservatives had their way we could see a move back to the old work houses where people handed over their children at the gate and worked 7 days a week non stop in terrible conditions.

Chchchchanging · 09/05/2015 07:27

Fed up of this
I have my right to vote too
After funding myself through uni working since 13 and now having a well paid job I voted for the party I saw fit to run a sound economy and not penalise my family for our continued efforts and traditional values
I have 3 disabled and service reliant mediate family members; to suggest when I voted I was intentionally hoping to affect them is rude and offensive
Over Tory reign they have had more consistency in access to needed support and class a nhs treatment
If you're affects are more profound who had been running your council and why have tegu not prioritised effectively
Our roads aren't perfect, parking charges are high and we personally lost child benefit but that's fine we have good schooling and nhs doctors and hospitals open and supporting us
I don't want to out myself but so far this year we've had 3 parents in hosp together, emergency care for strokes and bones, intensive care stays cancer treatment 5 days post diagnosis dialysis and usual GP requirements
The treatment had been excellent

So thanks, I'm happy with my vote
Labour couldn't even articulate how they were going to run same level service never mind fund change

BMW6 · 09/05/2015 07:35

Workhouses being brought back under evil tories......BINGO !!Biscuit

NRomanoff · 09/05/2015 07:39

What the OP is failing to grasp is that people do not trust labour. Greens wouldn't have got anywhere near, the same most other parties.

I don't need to defend tory policy, for one reason. Labour would have screwed over the exact same people in a different way. It's as simple as that. The Labour Party lied to take us to war, do you really think a few white lies during an election is going to bother then in the slightest.

As I said I voted Tory because it was the best thing for my community here, I had to make a choice. You said you wanted people to explain themselves, I did. But that's not quite enough for you, is it OP.

Do any tory voters want people to explain why the voted for the green etc?

If you think Lenin was a great man, then you need to do some more research.

Fairylea · 09/05/2015 08:03

BMW you may give me a biscuit for my workhouse comment but the reality isn't far from the truth for a lot of people. In our area nursery standards are slipping to a point of being dangerous. I made a formal complaint to ofsted about two that I visited with a view to putting ds in when he was a baby (and this is coming from the woman who put her eldest child into daycare at 12 weeks old so I could go back to work full time). The conservatives keep handing out more and more free childcare but the provision behind that childcare and the quality offered is becoming dangerously poor. They don't care about how good the childcare is they just want people off benefits and back into work at all costs. To me that isn't far off a workhouse culture - albeit a slightly modernised version.

Maybe everyone handing out the Biscuit should go and donate them to a food bank because people are going to be needing them more than ever now.

NonDom · 09/05/2015 08:07

There are not one million people using foodbanks.

fiveacres · 09/05/2015 08:08

The workhouse analogy is utterly ridiculous.

Go and do some research on Victorian and Edwardian welfare then come back and insist workhouses are on the brink of returning.

BMW6 · 09/05/2015 08:09

Do they get the toddlers to pick oakum and is there gruel for lunch? Do they sleep in segregated dormitories? Are men and women also resident but seperated from their children?

So not at all like a workhouse then - nowhere near a "slightly modernised version". You are a fool.

NRomanoff · 09/05/2015 08:13

Ffs work house are bit on the return, because you local nursery standards are slipping. Its a ridiculous comparison for so many reasons.

If you can even link the two, you really need to read up on workhouses. Its a ridiculous comparison

Madamecastafiore · 09/05/2015 08:17

The communists didn't look after the disabled Jacobsmum. They were put in asylums.

Remember the Romanian chap and all the little babies strapped to cots.

Excellent advertisement for how they look after the weak.
