Vote SNP, get Tory

Nicola Sturgeon has shown herself to be a charismatic politican who, understandably, is drawing a lot of support. But is she really going to get a chance to influence the next government?

The Conservatives are already declaring themselves the winners, if they get the most seats which the current polls are just giving them. The relationship between Cameron and Clegg is seamless. And, perhaps strongest of all, the SNP have the same media backers as the Conservatives. Why would that be?

Is it better to have Nicola Sturgeon as a heckler a long way from Westminster or to change the current government and have a strong representation of the SNP at Scottish level?

I don't understand the terror being whipped up about Scotland and the SNP.
Scotland has never had a voice in WM and has fought against this using the proper political tools. Their rights are protected in International Courts so I think it's time to listen to them.

Well I'm glad I have whisky for 22.00 tomorrow. With any luck I shall be completely stocious by the time the first counts report.

YNK I don't think there is any 'terror' about the SNP's influence (on this thread anyway).

iseenatree · 06/05/2015 21:24

YNK are you serious about Scotland never having a voice in Westminster? I've heard it all now.

Miltonmaid · 06/05/2015 21:27

I'm sure that CLegg and Cameron have been discussing this for some time. Those red lines have been agreed, what they will and won't include in an agreement. It's all quite obvious. What will be interesting though is of lib dems lose a lot of seats but I think Tory tactical votes will help them in areas against labour as polling on Clegg's constituency shows. The annoying thing for labour is that without the rise of the SNP on Scotland they would certainly be in stronger position than the Tories.

YNK · 06/05/2015 21:28

You appear to have selective hearing though, iseenatree.

midnightexpress · 06/05/2015 21:29

How has Scotland never had a voice? We had 13 years of Labour government until fairly recently, at a time when Scotland was largely voting Labour. And a PM from a Scottish constituency for 3 of them. And more recently a good chunk of LibDem MPs from Scottish constituencies in the coalition. I really don't understand this argument at all. And it looks likely to mean that the last 18 years have had much greater representation for Scottish seats in government than the next 5 will have, if the polls are right.

iseenatree · 06/05/2015 21:32

Sure YNK, whatever you say. Apart from the last PM and Chancellor no voice at all.

blowinahoolie · 06/05/2015 21:32

The Tories are only interested in serving the interests of those in London and that's it. No one else's voice matters (in Scotland or indeed other parts of the UK).

Labour has long neglected voters in Scotland and taken Scottish voters for granted for far too long now. They are now paying the price for this. Latest predictions earlier today were SNP 50% and Labour 25%. Shocking. I bet Labour never ever saw the day this would be the case....

blowinahoolie · 06/05/2015 21:34

"How has Scotland never had a voice?"

A PP has already answered your question. Every time Scotland voted Labour, it ended up with a Tory Government....exactly how is that representative?

And tomorrow it will vote SNP and get...a Tory government!

And when you say 'every time', I guess you mean apart from 1997, and 2002, and 2005?

iseenatree · 06/05/2015 21:37

blowinahoolie in what way, specifically has Labour neglected Scotland?

They haven't been in power for the last 5 years, since 41 Labour MPs were returned. Labour are being punished for disagreeing with independence and this elections Nick Clegg is reaping the benefit.

blowinahoolie · 06/05/2015 21:38

"And tomorrow it will vote SNP and get...a Tory government!"

Is this your scaremongering now? No need to stoop this low. It's not working.

blowinahoolie · 06/05/2015 21:39

"blowinahoolie in what way, specifically has Labour neglected Scotland? "

Have you seen the latest prediction polls in Scotland? They are lagging behind the SNP, which has never ever happened before. People have lost confidence in Labour.

blowinahoolie · 06/05/2015 21:40

I see the Tory voters are out in force tonight.

midnightexpress · 06/05/2015 21:41

Yes, I'd be interested (genuinely, I actually agree with much of the SNP's agenda, indy aside) to know how specifically Labour have neglected Scottish voters. Particularly in comparison with the SNP, who seem to me to talk a lot about 'progressive politics' without actually demonstrating much in the way of progressive politics in Holyrood.

muminhants · 06/05/2015 21:43

My feeling is that we will get more of the same - a Tory/Libdem coalition.

And if the SNP do as well as forecast, it will definitely happen.

I understand why people vote SNP in Scottish elections if they think they're doing a good job running Scotland. But I think a vote for the SNP in the Westminster elections is cutting your nose off to spite your face if you really hate the Tories as much as you profess to.

And if Cameron stays PM he won't be stupid enough to agree to another referendum (and will have the EU one to worry about, which could open a whole new can of worms).

Roseformeplease · 06/05/2015 21:44

"Everytime Scotland voted Labour, it ended up with a Tory government" seriously. In 1997? In 2 subsequent elections? 13 years of Labour. Scottish PM.

Also, Scotland had 59 MPs last week, last year and last decade. You don't need to vote SNP to get an MP speaking for Scotland, you have always had a local MP.

midnightexpress · 06/05/2015 21:44

Well, for the record, I have never, will never, vote Tory. How is it scaremongering? It seems very much to be on the cards. You keep telling us Scotland is voting SNP and the polls keep telling us Cameron is going to end up with most seats so...

blowinahoolie · 06/05/2015 21:48

"You don't need to vote SNP to get an MP speaking for Scotland"

It seems you do, why do you think there's been such an increase in people wanting to become members of the SNP? They're after change! If things were working, why do you think Labour and Tories are lagging behind in the prediction polls? Surely they would be at the top if things were working in Scotland? Tories never speak for Scotland, they are only interested in representing the most wealthy in society (excludes most Scottish people). Labour have had their day in Scotland.

iseenatree · 06/05/2015 21:58

blowinahoolie get off Wings and go and read a history book or something, please.

Politics is cyclical, the SNP are at the top of that cycle. They won't be forever. You can't give a specific way Labour ignored Scotland because there isn't any. People aren't clamouring for change they are clamouring for revenge and they are willing to risk a tory government to do it.

Miltonmaid · 06/05/2015 21:59

EXCL: Final #GE2015 seat prediction from YouGov's Peter Kellner - Con 284, Lab 263, SNP 48, LD 31, UKIP 2, GRN 1

This is the latest you gov seat prediction, just published. If this right, it's going to be messy.

blowinahoolie · 06/05/2015 22:02
