Vote SNP, get Tory

Nicola Sturgeon has shown herself to be a charismatic politican who, understandably, is drawing a lot of support. But is she really going to get a chance to influence the next government?

The Conservatives are already declaring themselves the winners, if they get the most seats which the current polls are just giving them. The relationship between Cameron and Clegg is seamless. And, perhaps strongest of all, the SNP have the same media backers as the Conservatives. Why would that be?

Is it better to have Nicola Sturgeon as a heckler a long way from Westminster or to change the current government and have a strong representation of the SNP at Scottish level?

I am a Green but will tactically vote SNP as my constituency is a LibDem/SNP marginal. There is no point in voting Labour and I wouldn't want to anyway. My Labour candidate bigs up his Haematology training but has actually jacked in the NHS to work for McKinsey's who have been involved in the Tory NHS reforms.

The SNP have clearly stated that they will not support a Tory Government. Labour can have the backing of SNP MPs on key issues without actually doing a deal with the SNP. And if Ed won't do that then he will be the one responsible for another Tory Govt, and probably the break up of the UK too.

Miltonmaid · 06/05/2015 20:03

Without enough Scotland seats, Labour won't be the biggest party. Clegg has made it very clear that he will talk to the party with the most seats first ie Tories. If you assume UKIP and DUP vote with them, they can govern. Cameron would certainly be out if it weren't for the SNP polling so well.

iseenatree · 06/05/2015 20:05

The numbers I posted up are within the margin of error of every poll. The tories absolutely could form a minority government with the necessary 323 MPs.

If Labour gets the most seats, the Lib Dems will deal with Labour and the tories are gone, no ifs, no buts.

Look at the evidence its everywhere, Tories switching to Nick Clegg in Sheffield Hallam, Clegg firming up the biggest party stance, the Telegraph, The Sun, The Daily Mail all producing a tactical voting guide telling people where to vote Tory and where to Vote Lib Dem. Then all the talk about biggest party being ramped up everywhere and more pants about how dangerous the SNP are. They think they have the 323 and coalition 2.0 talks are well under way.

cardibach · 06/05/2015 20:07

Tories can declare themselves the winners all they like - that's not how the system works! Voting elects parliament, not government, and still less the PM. Once we have elected parliament any party which can hold power is allowed to take it. Thems the rules.

iseenatree · 06/05/2015 20:07

I would advise anyone in a marginal seat between SNP and Lib Dems/Tories to vote SNP.

HirplesWithHaggis · 06/05/2015 20:08

If Labour want Scottish votes, they shouldn't have spent the past couple of years calling 45% of us viruses, vermin and Nazis. Piss poor planning, really.

Hirples you are just telling utter utter lies. When have the Labour party said anything of the sort?

funnyossity · 06/05/2015 20:28

I'd always be wary of Rupert Murdoch's endorsement!

Kampeki · 06/05/2015 20:33

If you're in favour of Scottish independence, then you should probably vote SNP.

If you're in favour of the union, then you probably shouldn't.

If you vote SNP in this election, then at best, the SNP will be able to prop up an unpopular minority labour government for this parliament, but even that is by no means certain. At worst, you'll end up with a Tory government, and Scotland will be irrelevant.

In the longer term, if Scotland votes in loads of SNP MPs this time, I think people in England will be much less likely to vote Labour in the future, as there is real fear of the SNP wielding too much power. Hence we'll get more Tory governments, and Scottish votes will continue to be an irrelevance.

Of course, if you want Scottish independence (and I don't blame you if you do!) then that's probably good news, as it strengthens the argument for ditching Westminster. If you're in favour of the union continuing, then perhaps you should think twice about voting for the SNP.

HirplesWithHaggis · 06/05/2015 20:36

Well, you could have a look at the Twitter feed of Labour party member and activist Ian Smart for a start, iseen. And then think about the threats to bomb our airports and put armed guards on the border had we voted Yes. They allied themselves with the Tories, they cheered and backslapped with the Tories, they can hardly be surprised if we treat them like Tories.

DinosaursRoar · 06/05/2015 20:43

Itssllgoingtobefine - while a coallision that doesn't contain the largest party can form a government if they can pull together half the seats, without the SNP, labour can't do that, and they've said they won't form a formal coallision with them. (Obviously, when faced with turning down the keys to no. 10, ed might have a re-think of that idea)

If no group can get half, the closest will form a minority government, which probably would be Tory/libdem/Dup. (Then another election at Christmas, joy!)

If the SNP wanted votes, they could have done without ignoring the 55% the majority last time I looked who they've totally ignored since September. I can't stay the SNP have called that 55% traitors, scum, and worse, but they haven't really reigned in those who have.

I'll be tactically voting for the first time in my life in a probably useless attempt to help to halt the SNP hero worship around here.

If the SNP get in at Westminster will they force another referendum? If so hopefully the Union will break up, I think it would be best for all concerned.

I don't know why people would think 'Scottish voices need to be heard' when it's actually the English who are denied proper representation by having MPs they can never hope to unseat voting on issues which will affect only them and not their constituents, they have no accountability for the decisions they make on English only issues.

In fact I suspect if the SNP get in at Westminster the English will give the Scots the push and not the other way round.

iseenatree · 06/05/2015 20:53

Hirples, please www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/jk-rowling-comics-guru-mark-5636552

The Labour party have done NOTHING to the 45% but try to build bridges, there is only one side continuing the fight and they are as nasty as ever. And this absolute nobody, Ian Smart is an idiot.

Latest prediction, Tories/Lib Dems/DUP 323 seats and a majority.

Redlocks28 · 06/05/2015 20:58

The Lib Dems are only going to work with the largest party. There is an excellent chance that enough people will vote SNP to make the Tories the largest party. Then you will see a Tory/Lib Dem coalition again supported by the DUP and UKIP.So it's very possible a vote for SNP will bring in a Tory government.

I don't want this to happen but feel increasingly worried that it will :(

HirplesWithHaggis · 06/05/2015 21:01

I'm not trying to take any moral high ground, Hanna. But I was accused of lying, so defended myself. Can we please not derail this thread?

No, Aermingers, this election will not lead (directly, anyway) to another referendum. That's not in the manifesto this time round, they have no mandate. Traditionally, the SNP have not voted on matters which are devolved, but if it is a minority Lab gvt this time, they might find it hard to pass much legislation without that support. It's a conundrum.

blowinahoolie · 06/05/2015 21:03

Hear hear!

ComposHatComesBack · 06/05/2015 21:07

The Lib Dems are only going to work with the largest party

No they said they'd talk to the biggest party first. They talked to both parties last time and will do again. Especially as Tories plus Lib Dems might not be enough to survive a confidence vote.

Lets not derail the thread like i did when I told a big fat lie, to derail the thread - Hirples

Miltonmaid · 06/05/2015 21:16

Clegg has no desire to work with Labour. His posturing over the last week or so has shown this. He wants the status quo. He will absolutely try to get a deal with the Tories first if they are the largest party. With UKIP and DUP it will be enough.
