AIBU to think a phone as pricey as an Iphone should have shatter proof glass?

Just that really why can't it be shatterproof?

I've had several iPhones and iPads and I've never shattered a screen but then I use cases and I'm very careful.

shewept · 05/05/2015 06:43

It's because the glass goes so far to the edge.

I have had 2 Nokia lumia, dropped both a lot neither have even broken, the screen doesn't go right to the edge. I assume Apple think people want a screen that goes to the edge.

I'm a clumsy wretch but I've never managed to break any of my 3, or 2 iPads. I always have a thin protective case of some description, doesn't everyone?

A bit Confused at people saying they should be waterproof. They're complex electronics. What other electronic devices do you expect to be able to drop down the loo and still complain if it shorts out? (My mate's Galaxy did not survive a swift dunk in a puddle).

Blackberries are tough - one dropped one and it bounced all the way down the steps from the Jubilee Bridge to Embankment tube. Barely a dent. Shame they're shit phones. We had them replaced with Lumias at work, a colleague managed to crack the screen on day 2. They're slippery fuckers.

RingforJeeves · 05/05/2015 07:03

I've had every iPhone and iPad and so far not one cracked screen. I don't really understand how people manage to do so much damage to them? I've sat on them, stepped on a few and dropped them all many, many times. The iPads have survived my children using them almost daily. I have everything in cases and covers, but just cheap silicone ones, not those bulky industrial strength ones.

ScrambedEggAndToast · 05/05/2015 07:04

I agree. Back in the days when I had an iPhone, I broke the screen on at least 3 occasions. I now have a Samsung and have dropped it screen first on a hard floor on countless occasions and not even a crack.

Hulababy · 05/05/2015 07:13

I've had iPhones and iPads, for a few years now. I broke my screen only recently but it wasn't Apple's fault it smashed. It was knocked out of my hand into hard concrete and had no case and no form of screen protection on it. So yes, it cracked. It did however still work. I had it repaired a day later - £60 and an hour later and good as new.

I thought the iPhone 6 now had tempered glass on it anyway.

But it's always going to be hard to have something made of glass and it not be breakable, surely?

Fwiw I know people with phones of other makes which have also broken screens too. It's not hut an apple issue no matter how many people would like it to be. Friends dd who smashed their phone same weekend as mine had a Samsung.

Totality22 · 05/05/2015 07:15

DP's iPhone is on screen number 3 and my Galaxy is just dandy. Neither in a case and I've had mine about a year longer!!!

lougle · 05/05/2015 07:21

I have a Galaxy Note 3. I put a £3.99 9H glass screen cover on it. Last week I accidently nudged it on the windowsill on the top landing. It bounced all the way down the stair rail, then fell from the 4th step onto bamboo flooring. No harm done.

Ledkr · 05/05/2015 07:45

I was wiping my I pad the other day, with an I wipe, just gently and it suddenly cracked in about 3 places Shock so weird.
I've had my I phone for 4 yrs no problem.

NoUseForAName · 05/05/2015 07:46

I don't want to jinx myself either but there are 5iphones in this house and an iPad, not one of them has had a smashed screen despite the iPad being used by 3,6 and 7 year olds, and the 6&7 year olds using two of the phones as iPods without cases. Dd left one iPhone outside under a hedge for 3months from playing outside in the summer and forgetting to bring it in, dh found it covered in mud after cutting the lawn and we cleaned it put it in the airing cupboard for a few weeks and it still works!
I threw my phone across the street by accident the case came flying off and the phone hit the curb, my heart was in my mouth as I went to pick it up but it was fine!

Wiifitmama · 05/05/2015 08:20

iPhones and iPads here too. For many years. All in otterbox cases and never a cracked screen. I drop mine daily. Hence the otterbox case.

Theycallmemellowjello · 05/05/2015 08:23

Aren't all apple's products designed to die in two years? Planned obsolescence. They're in it to make money after all.

Stinkylinky · 05/05/2015 08:33

I've done incredibly well not to smash any screens on the two iPhones or iPad that I have owned.

My main bug bear with Apple is their completely shit chargers that last a month or so max!

19lottie82 · 05/05/2015 08:33

Samsungs have "Gorilla Glass" which is hard to scratch, but also is prone to breaking.

If people want shatterproof phone screens they would essentially have to be plastic (or very thick) which would not repel scratches.

Get a decent case and this will help. I've dropped my ip6 loads of times and the screen has never smashed.

19lottie82 · 05/05/2015 08:36

Wiifit.... Otterboxes are awesome. Expensive but worth it.
I find authentic Apple chargers are fine and last for ages, but non apple ones die very quickly. My DH buys cables for £1 and moans when they only last a week.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/05/2015 08:39

Everyone I know who has an iPhone has smashed it at some point. They are vastly over priced compared to android phones and I say that as someone who has a Mac computer, iPad and iPod. I've dropped my Motorola numerous times, I'm not clumsy but if you handle your phone a lot it stands to reason at some point it'll get dropped and the gorilla glass didn't even scratch.

19lottie82 · 05/05/2015 08:40

No just a rumour.

My friend has a an iphone 3 which is still going strong.

You won't be able to install system updates after a while but that's longer than 2 years. Even without the newest iOS it wills till work you just won't be able to install the newest apps.

Older Android devices will have similar problems also.

19lottie82 · 05/05/2015 08:42

Everyone I know who has an iPhone has smashed it at some point.

Everyone? Really? You must know some pretty clumsy people!
My DH and I have had iphones for 5 years and my 2 x DSD's for 2 years and none of us have ever had a broken screen.

Purpleball · 05/05/2015 08:45

I've had 5 iPhones and 2 iPads (that's not a boast, work issue them) and I've never even cracked a screen.

All of them had screen protectors on and all were kept in leather cases. My first 3GS is still going, as are the 4 and 4S (given to parents) and I have a 5 and 5s at present

If you don't want to smash a screen, protect it. The cases are less than a tenner on Amazon

Shinyshoes2 · 05/05/2015 08:49

My iPhone 4s was dropped many many many times , not a scratch on it
My iPhone 6 however , dropped once and now has a crack along the screen and chips on the front . It looks terrible

Songofsixpence · 05/05/2015 08:52

My iPhone 5 screen smashed when it fell out of my pocket. I was sitting on a wall and it was in my coat pocket. It couldn't have fallen more than a few centimetres so I was surprised it smashed so easily

I had iPhone 3 and then 4 for ages and dropped them on a fairly daily basis, passed them on to DD when I upgraded and they're still going strong, not so much as a scratch on them

My iPad slid off the sofa a few weeks ago and landed on its corner on the carpet. Big crack on the screen now, although still usable.

areyoutheregoditsmemargaret · 05/05/2015 08:53

I'm wondering about the battery on my mini iPad, it's about 2 years old and even by Apple standards seems to drain in about 10 minutes. Do batteries need to be replaced occasionally?

SoupDragon · 05/05/2015 08:54

I dropped my Samsung Galaxy loads and it never broke

I've dropped multiple iPhones multiple and they have never broken either.

fattymcfatfat · 05/05/2015 08:58

I had Samsung galaxy s3 on contract. that was brilliant no oproblem until I threw it on my couch, it bounced and hit my cup. phone shattered. Sad now I'm using a shitty Sony until next month when I am due my upgrade.
