AIBU to think a phone as pricey as an Iphone should have shatter proof glass?

Just that really why can't it be shatterproof?

I'm sure it was chosen for its design properties rather than durability.

Maybe if people pay so much for an expensive item they should take more care when handeling it? (I'm not being mean, I dropped an iPhone down the toilet a few years ago)

cogitosum · 04/05/2015 23:42

I agree. And it fucks me right off that you can buy a clear plastic screen protector for £10 that really works. If it's that easy why can't they put it on in the first place?!

I've been through several iPhones!

Carrie5608 · 04/05/2015 23:44

But whois it's an everyday item used multiple times a day. It's not like the good China that you take out once a year.

Is it fit for purpose if it's so bloody fragile and water sensitive?

i've been through several iPhones

Maybe that's why? Smashed screens = more units shifted

Mine get nicked before I break them:(

Yes! I dropped my Samsung Galaxy loads and it never broke - I have had to pay Timpson's three times to fix my iPhone so far. You would think I would either buy a case or learn not to drop it but I haven't.

FesterAddams · 04/05/2015 23:49

The glass goes all the way to the corners of the phone so there's very little other material to cushion the impact. The glass has to be very thin because people like thin phones. And the glass has to be hard so it doesn't scratch; but that also makes it brittle.

So it's actually a really difficult engineering problem. The best material currently available is called "gorilla glass", which is used in the iPhone. But Apple recently invested in a manufacturer of sapphire-infused glass (!) so they are looking at alternatives.

Dumpylump · 04/05/2015 23:51

I have loads of friends and colleagues with iPhones, I don't think there's a single one of them that hasn't had a broken or smashed screen at some point.
I don't know of any other make of handset that has such a rubbish screen, and I agree with previous poster who said it's probably a deliberate and cynical measure to sell more of the flaming things!
Dp has had at least 10 of them between work and personal phones and drives me crackers with his refusal to accept that a different make could actually be better for him.....and keeps going back to pay for yet another replacement screen. Mug!

hellsbells99 · 04/05/2015 23:51

They need to make them waterproof too!

velouria · 05/05/2015 00:03

They are way too fragile, along with iPod touch. I have dropped and dunked my Nokia lumia loads of times and its still soldiering on, it has an aluminium back/edging which is a bit dented in places, but no cracks.

bette06 · 05/05/2015 00:13

I'm not sure if I've ever seen an iphone without a cracked screen. They don't come from the shop like that, then?

I second the previous poster's opinion on Samsung Galaxy - I don't know how its features etc compare to the iphone but I've tested its durability extensively as I'm a clumsy bugger and it's always survived in tact.

Mutley77 · 05/05/2015 00:27

I had a galaxy for nearly three years and it survived intact. I smashed two iPhone screens within 3 months of having the phone. Useless! Gone back to a galaxy now.... It's not practical for me to just not drop it as I am always rushing and the dc also either use it or pass it to me which obviously results in more drops ...

CallMeExhausted · 05/05/2015 00:38

My DH, my DS and I all have iPhones. We also have 2 iPads in the house. None of us have ever cracked a screen. I actually find it funny that it is supposedly such a common occurrence.

Definitely have dropped our phones, but we have had them in cheap cases since we got them.

OopNorth · 05/05/2015 01:05

Otterbox cases are fabulous I've found

JaceLancs · 05/05/2015 01:12

I'm on my 3rd version of the iPhone also have a work one, 2 iPads large one for home and mini for work
Not broken a screen yet
The iPhone's i don't even have in cases just tend to keep in inside pocket of my handbag or briefcase

alleypalley · 05/05/2015 01:35

I'm loathe to post as I don't want to jinx myself, but I have had 2 iPhones and an iPad and as yet no broken screens, and that's with 2 children that use them as well. I have seen many a cracked screen though.

Although saying that, when my 2 were very small I did have a military case for my iPad, proper tough it was. I knew someone with the same case who dropped it out of a moving vehicle and it stayed intact.

crustsaway · 05/05/2015 01:50

If they did that then they wouldn't have a quarter of the revenue from new phones due to this that they have Grin Its not nor never will be something that a phone company will do.

KoalaDownUnder · 05/05/2015 02:00

I totally agree, they are shit. Am currently looking through a spiderweb of cracks as I refuse to pay for yet another screen.

The problem with the protective cases is that they make the phone too bulky to fit into purses.

umbongoumbongo · 05/05/2015 04:15

Actually I've dropped mine multiple times mostly at the stables and onto concrete/in puddles and it has been fine. I have a snug fit grippy silicon gel cover on it which just encloses the back and the edges and a screen protector film and it hardly adds to the size at all. Can still fit it in tiny pocket in jods to take riding no bother. It even fell into the washing up bowl off the windowsill and was in there for the time it took me to run downstairs after I heard the splash and it dried out and worked fine within an hour as the cover stops too much water getting in. They are about £3 on eBay!

Ledkr · 05/05/2015 04:46

Dd dropped hers yesterday and the BACK shattered into tiny pieces ffs.

googoodolly · 05/05/2015 05:17

I've had two iPod touches and an iPhone and none of the screens have cracked or scratched. I don't have a case on them either - I have to say I've only ever seen one person with a smashed screen and that's because they dropped it on concrete!

coolaschmoola · 05/05/2015 05:29

This is why I have Samsung...

Mominatrix · 05/05/2015 05:39

How would having shatterproof glass prevent them from getting revenue? The vast majority of people who crack their glass do not go to apple to get new phones - they simply replace the glass from somewhere else - often with a non-apple glass? People get new phones when a new one comes out/their phones go off contract. Not something unique to Apple.

TBH, I have never shattered the glass in my iPod, iPad, iPad mini, or my iPhones - simply have always protected the glass (cheap and quick to do) and have a good cover. I wince everytime I see people with phones without covers - yes, it looks nicer, but they really are asking for cracked screens.

Incidently, Samsungs shatter just a quickly.

ShowMeYourTARDIS · 05/05/2015 06:12

I am incredibly clumsy and drop my phone multiple times a day. Sometimes, I will drop it, pick it up, drop it, pick it up again, and drop it again. So far, it has survived.

I do not spend a lot of money on phones for a reason. I do invest in a good case though.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 05/05/2015 06:27

Touch wood it's never happened to me yet.

Have dropped 1 down the toilet, thank god for insurance
