okay, so i'm old.. but i don't get the you tube and vloging thing thing. my youngest dd [15] has been following a well known you tuber connor franta and sends messages to him on twitter, he has sent back a message direct to her and now she has gained over a 1000 likes because of the message she sent that he liked and responded to !!!! it all happened within a couple of hours, she's star struck, i'm gob smacked and 100s of young people want her to put in good word for them with the man of the moment, so he might contact them too, crazy or what ? i have expect fans peering through the window when i'm doing the washing up and her getting asked for autographs at school several people who know her have retweeted it and face booked it too, she is probably known about in darkest peru and outer mongolia as i type this.
but i still don't get it am i being dim or something ? [be gentle i'm a facebook. social media virgin] !

coumarin you honestly don't. Grin I can only assume its because a few friends are all 'instafamous' they started their businesses on there and we all tag each other in stuff. I think people mainly follow me because I know people who have interesting accounts. I am honestly not that interesting nor do I love to post selfies in my underwear. That will always get you plenty of followers. Wink

ImNameyChangey · 01/05/2015 19:03

It's great for her but she's not a Youtube celeb because of extra likes. My nephew got mentioned by Stampy Longnose last month as "one to watch" in some Minecraft tournament....he's still normal despit the extra thousands of likes or whatever.

balancingfigure · 01/05/2015 19:03

I think everyone is being really mean to the OP! She has explained that she doesn't understand social media and so doesn't understand what has happened, and don't really so please could someone explain in simple terms what has happened?

Roussette · 01/05/2015 19:05
ItsAllKickingOffPru · 01/05/2015 19:07

Ahhh, it's nice she's riding a wave due to a comment. these things matter when you're young. Smile

scarletforya · 01/05/2015 19:07

Aww, don't be mean everyone. OP, request for the thread to be deleted.

scarletforya · 01/05/2015 19:08

Grin @ Stampy Longnose needing a break!

FuzzyWizard · 01/05/2015 19:18

Turns out I'm a celeb!! Every Christmas at school the staff do a silly video for the kids where we prat about miming to a song they'll know. This year we got about 10,000 views in YouTube after the local paper tweeted a link. Should I hire an agent?

Roussette · 01/05/2015 20:43

Hmmm.... if my DCs of that age needed validation through social media like that, TBH I would be worried.

I really don't want to rain on your parade OP (if this is serious...) but just bear in mind, 'likes' are transient. Tomorrow it's someone else.

MammaTJ · 02/05/2015 08:11

Stampy Longnose is indeed famous! My 8 year old DS is obsessed!

Urgh!

Just looked at this Commot bloke on twitter.

He tweets he's woken up and gets 13k likes. He tweets he's going to sleep and gets another 13k likes and 600 retweets.

He replies "yes" to a tweet and...you guessed it....

fearandloathinginambridge · 02/05/2015 08:53

My God what a lot of vitriolic responses. Completely unnecessary and rather cruel. Ignore it OP.

Machin · 02/05/2015 09:02

I don't understand a word of this Sad

How does getting famous by collecting likes work? Is it a fan thing?

LynetteScavo · 02/05/2015 09:10

Connor bloke - what did auto correct do there???

taxi4ballet · 02/05/2015 09:59

A friend of mine is a student recipe blogger and has over 20,000 followers. She isn't remotely famous, nor has she become a 'celebrity'.

On the other hand, the relative of another friend of mine has several million followers and gets tens of thousands of likes a day. Now that IS famous. And yes, they are a real celebrity.

calzone · 02/05/2015 10:05

Am not sure the OP meant it in the way it has been taken.

Ds(10y) was playing with an 'actual real life YouTuber, Mum!!'

He was so chuffed!
If he had had 1000 likes due to this, he would have been ecstatic.

Tis just a new trend......OP doesn't really think her dad is a sleb. Tis just what people do these days.

calzone · 02/05/2015 10:07

Dd not Dad!!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 02/05/2015 12:07

Nobody's being mean to the OP, this could happen to any of us with teens... I'm more bothered by the people seeing vitriol here, there is none, I think most of us know where she's coming from. Confused

... and what's wrong with having a little boast anyway (which OP probably wasn't, I now think). Dozens of posters post just to boast and if they can't get it in the OP they'll insert it in somewhere else. Grin

To a teen this kind of stuff can m.a.t.t.e.r more than life itself. To the rest of us, it doesn't really register.

zoobaby · 02/05/2015 12:15

She's a legend in her own lunch box now!

EthethethethChrisWaddle · 02/05/2015 14:36

My BIL has 244,000 followers on Instagram. Puts my 50 followers to shame!

But then I stopped following him as I found his posts repetitive. What do I know, endless pics of London are obviously better than my pics of my kids and cats!

Cherriesandapples · 02/05/2015 14:39

Yes, and weird Thomas / Frozen mash ups!

Sallyingforth · 02/05/2015 14:48

I do feel sad that a 15 year old (or her mother) is sitting in front of Youtube counting her 'likes'.
At that age she should be meeting people and developing the social skills so necessary in real life.
And a long history on social media will be a hindrance when being interviewed for a job, when asked to describe her hobbies and interests.

Shakey1500 · 02/05/2015 14:49

Ye Gads yes to Stampy, Ballistic squid, LforLeeeeeee (?) and pewdipie.

Actually I don't mind Stampy and his cheery "Helloooooooooooo!" 's and infectious laugh. DS watched a video of him and his friend traipsing around Disney California as we'd just got back. He was in his element.

Penguinbear · 02/05/2015 15:01

Let her enjoy it :) If she wants to get famous on YouTube etc, having a famous vlogger on your side to tweet you or support you can help a lot however the way this is usually done is through a mangament company so X is taken on by company and becomes publically friendly with Y (also managed by the company) and starts appearing in their videos etc. Although I must say true friendships have started this way and remain till this day :)
