okay, so i'm old.. but i don't get the you tube and vloging thing thing. my youngest dd [15] has been following a well known you tuber connor franta and sends messages to him on twitter, he has sent back a message direct to her and now she has gained over a 1000 likes because of the message she sent that he liked and responded to !!!! it all happened within a couple of hours, she's star struck, i'm gob smacked and 100s of young people want her to put in good word for them with the man of the moment, so he might contact them too, crazy or what ? i have expect fans peering through the window when i'm doing the washing up and her getting asked for autographs at school several people who know her have retweeted it and face booked it too, she is probably known about in darkest peru and outer mongolia as i type this.
but i still don't get it am i being dim or something ? [be gentle i'm a facebook. social media virgin] !

A 'sleb' follows me on twitter. I got shit loads of follows the day she followed me. Even now loads of my new followers are her fans. Any piece of crap she favourites gets loads of favourites. It's odd, but doesn't make me famous.

Shit!!!!! She got 1000 likes??? She is famous!

Seriously OP, I think you have been caught up in your dd excitement. It's not actually a huge deal. She isn't famous not will anyone come to the door looking for her.

But in perspective, I have 5k followers on Twitter and histogram.......And I am not familiar or even vaguely exciting, funny or interesting to follow. My last post was a picture of my new wall light Grin

private really? A lot of my rl friends have many more than that. So I suppose I thought it was average.

It's a Captain America wall light. Maybe my marvel obsession has boosted it Grin

Ouch OP. I think you were hoping for a little boast here and you've had a shot of reality. Your daughter's not a celebrity, it's as other posters have said, an indictment of our society now with teens fizzing away over very little or nothing - and youtube and other social media is the outlet for that.

I don't even know who the person she was following actually is. The hysteria is over his posts not your daughters, so I think you're safe from groupies and fans.

I would bring her gently down to earth and put this 'liking' thing in perspective before she makes a twit of herself.

DadonIce It has become quite the thing now.

Even bigger is Twitch, a platform that allows gamers to stream what they're playing with commentary. People can literally quit their jobs to become full time game streamers. I have a couple of favourite Twitch streamers myself, and he became so popular last summer that he could afford to quit his job. However when the summer holidays ended he had to go back to his day job (he was a freelance computer tech, so it wasn't like he had to go begging for a job back, he just stopped taking jobs for a while). He still streams pretty regularly and has won awards too. On Twitch, you have the ability to become a "Twitch Partner" - You need to fit a specific set of criteria to become so, such as regular streaming and a certain amount of viewers. But when you are a Twitch Partner, you get paid money from adverts on your channels. Viewers can also subscribe to the channel for $5 a month (non commital), and the streamer gets a cut of that, and people can donate a set amount of money, which I believe they keep majority of. I've seen single donations of $1000 before!

There are also people that have become millionaires from gaming, and I wish I was good enough to do so as well Sad

I dated a celebrity back when fame meant creating something that won you renown. in the real world. he was forever on the front pages of the tabloids - their favourite bad boy.

I was pretty giddy at the time, much like your daughter. went straight to my head until it was so far up my arse I'd have worn it to Ascot.

blew over, of course.

Aww I didn't notice this was AIBU and was hoping this was a guest blog with Zoellas mum or somethingGrin

I have about 6k Instagram followers and I'm not very interesting either, I'm just good at plaits, have nice house decor and a cute kidGrin

Your daughter isn't famous, though I've seen it happen where a famous vlogger favourited one girls hair tutorial video online, this gained her 10k new subscribers overnight which kept growing as they liked her videos, and said girl now does YT for her day job!

My sister is a bit 'famous' on Instagram with almost half a million followers. I, on the other hand, am feeling famous when someone repins my pins on Pinterest! Grin

How did she become so famous, imip?

Chippednailvarnish · 01/05/2015 17:57

I'm clearly not down with the kids as I have absolutely no idea what you're on about.

It's a worry imperial. Reluctant to say exactly what she does as it'll out me but she had big fake boobs and lots of tattoos. I don't follow her on Instagram but check in occasionally to make sure she is 'ok'. In rl, she isn't all that 'ok'...

I didn't realise that she had such a big following until I saw madonna's followers in comparison.

Shewept 5000+ followers on Instagram and twitter isn't average.

OP calm down! Unless you're the 15 year old, in which case, carry on. Grin

It's normal. If Justin Bieber retweets someone or follows them, that person will get 1000's of new followers within seconds. It's a teenage fan thing. Exactly how a lot of us were as teenagers but now they have the internet so easy access to 'celebs' in a way we didn't have.

Let her have her thrilled, Queen of Sheba moment but you're the adult.

Got to laugh...My mundane photos of 'here is my new wall light' and 'this is my new superman mug' got me above average followers.....omg I am instafamous Grin

Actually just remembered David hasslehoff and Chloe Madely follow me, maybe it's not the wall lights then. Maybe it's the uber slebs that follow me Grin

I don't think the OP actually thinks her DD is famous or is boasting. I think she is just bemused that you can get all these messages just because someone has responded to you. I think she is exaggerating for effect, or am I reading it wrong?
