To be annoyed with my colleagues re their political preferences?

Taystee · 01/05/2015 11:09

I am probably BU but all my colleagues are going to be voting conservative next week. There's no variety at all. They all say the conservatives fixed the economy and they don't want to pay more taxes. I think they're brainwashed. Is this typical of a financial services workplace? Seems so selfish and shortsited to me.

Oh for fucks sake Biscuit

whippy33 · 01/05/2015 11:31

It seems to selfish to think that everyone should think the same way as you.

ladymariner · 01/05/2015 11:32

Nothing to do with you what anyone else votes....keep your beak out and concentrate on what you are going to vote.

Latara · 01/05/2015 11:33

It is annoying but it's their business who they vote for.

This is why you shouldn't discuss politics in the workplace!

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 01/05/2015 11:33

The politics section is ----->

People have the right to vote for whomever they want.

But yes, if you work in a bank with well-paid people then they are more likely to vote Conservative.

asmallandnoisymonkey · 01/05/2015 11:34

sings mind your own business!

Also, they probably think you're a self righteous twonk if you go around saying they're brainwashed for having a different political view to you. I know I do.

BakewellSlice · 01/05/2015 11:37

Just think "it's good to vote".

Taystee · 01/05/2015 11:39

I haven't told them they're brainwashed! I just wish people would do a bit more research. They haven't read any manifestos and haven't even heard of the vote for policies website.

But yes, I really wish we hadn't discussed it now.

I actually think I'm more annoyed with myself for working in a job I don't like with people who think so differently to me. Think I need to reassess my life.

OP posts:
MrsHathaway · 01/05/2015 11:49

YABvU to be annoyed that they're voting differently from you.

YANBU to be annoyed that they have gone with the headlines and not the detail.

uglyswan · 01/05/2015 11:51

Well, if everyone is going to talk about politics at work, yanbu to start a discussion and state your own political viewpoints as well. What do your colleagues think their taxes pay for? Do they oppose tax funding for education, healthcare, roads and infrastructure, public libraries etc?

mrsfuzzy · 01/05/2015 11:52

some people would say you need to get a life so you don't have time to worry about other peoples voting views.
the fact is that many people think that the tories have done a good job of clearing up the mess made by labour, as do i, but everyone has their own opinions that is freedom of choice, it's not brain washing at all.
i am well read in politics so i make my choice on that, why do you think others don't do the same ?

mrsfuzzy · 01/05/2015 11:55

taysee, do you have communist leanings by any chance ? it sounds very much like it.

FreudiansSlipper · 01/05/2015 11:57

I think if you are working in finance (investment banking etc) you are more likely to be working with people who vote conservative

and working in some environments is like being in a bubble especially when so many are on wages far above the national average and the drive behind their work is a huge bonus

it is difficult when you have very different views but you may get to gloat next week Grin lets hope

uglyswan · 01/05/2015 12:01

mrsfuzzy - a communist infiltrating the financial sector? Interesting...

Flossieflower01 · 01/05/2015 12:01

I'm more annoyed by a colleague who hasn't even registered to vote! Mid thirties, has never voted in her life- grrrrr!!

Taystee · 01/05/2015 12:03

They're just starting to bug me. I work with mostly newish graduates. We had a meeting the other week about using our volunteering day and they said that they didn't want to go to a Council Estate to help paint as it would be too rough and didn't want to help the elderly in case we had to touch them! Shock

I just feel like the odd one out here. I know most of you now think I'm a horrible person but I hope I'm not...

OP posts:
AuntyMag10 · 01/05/2015 12:08

Oh do get over yourself. It's not your business at all!!!!

Taystee · 01/05/2015 12:09

It is my business what type of people I work with though, isn't it? If I don't fit in, maybe I shouldn't be here?

OP posts:
uglyswan · 01/05/2015 12:10

"didn't want to help the elderly in case we had to touch them!" Are you fucking serious? And you're the horrible person here?

Mrscurlywurly83 · 01/05/2015 12:12

Everyone has different priorities. Me and my other half are voting differently. Just vote for who you want and not bother yourself too much about it all i say.

AldiQ7 · 01/05/2015 12:13

It is my business what type of people I work with though, isn't it? If I don't fit in, maybe I shouldn't be here?

So change careers then? Confused

or is the money too good?

mrsfuzzy · 01/05/2015 12:13

flossie relax, have a cup of tea and lay in a darkened room for a couple of hours.
taystee, i'm sure you are a very nice person but some people are a bit selfish like that any way, and won't help others seemingly less fortunate than themselves. does not reflect their political leanings though, being a life long tory does not make me a snob [if indeed that it supposed to be an insult, so be it]. i go to charity shops and the like, i'm thrifty but live well. i come from working class, but now have middle class life style.

CupidStuntSurvivor · 01/05/2015 12:15

An awful lot of people this week have started threads that seem to fly in the face of democracy. The reason we live in a democracy is because people have different opinions. If you expect your colleagues to vote the way you do, you don't believe in democracy.

Taystee · 01/05/2015 12:17

Totally serious about the elderly thing. I was shocked. I even piped up and said in a sarcastic way "Yes lets help people as long as they're not too poor or smelly" and I think they actually agreed with me
