Name changed for this as will definitely out myself. Announced baby's name as Barbara to honour relative but have got lots of Confused. One person says dd will get bullied.

AIBU to call her this? I think it sounds lovely!

OP posts:

Love it. I too think you are ahead of the curve, I would be happy to call my daughter Barbara! It's a pretty name, as someone said upthread, a cool 60s girl name Smile

ProcessYellowC · 29/04/2015 20:50

Aww, Barbara was my dream name when I was younger (say 8-10) and I wanted to change my name to it. This may have been something to do with Barbie Blush

MuddlingMackem · 29/04/2015 21:06

Always liked Barbara, but that might be because it was one of the names my parents considered for me. My actual name has also been mentioned in this thread. :)

OP, go for it. I'm sure people will get used to it (all four grandparents disliked our DD's name initially but it grew on them Grin ).

BolshierAyraStark · 29/04/2015 21:14

I know a Barbara, same age as me-36. Absolutely hates her name, so much so she isn't known by it & has used her middle name since she was around 12.

I don't like it & wouldn't use it but I wouldn't do a cats bum face to anyone who did.

Titsalinabumsquash · 29/04/2015 21:15

I've just had my DD1, her middle name is Barbara after my 99 year old grandmother and its MIL's middle name, I think it's incredibly rude for people to comment or screw their faces up, at least it's easy to pronounce and spell and is an actual name unlike some of the 'unique' things people are making up calling their kids these days.

backtowork2015 · 29/04/2015 21:16

I think people are being horrible, it's my mummy's name and it's lovely, go for it

backtowork2015 · 29/04/2015 21:17

I think people are being horrible, it's my mummy's name and it's lovely, go for it

SylvaniansKeepGettingHoovered · 29/04/2015 21:22

Sorry, I'm with the cats bums on this one. It's cruel to call a baby Barbara.

landrover · 29/04/2015 21:23

Always makes me think of Barbara woodhouse!

DustBunnyFarmer · 29/04/2015 21:26

Margaret has to be due a revival

I know a tiny Peggy, though I don't know her parents well enough to know whether her full name is Margaret.

CocktailQueen · 29/04/2015 21:32

I think people are being v cruel here! So it's ok to call a kid Tiger or
Atticus, but not Barbara?

Which is an actual proper name?

Bonkers! What's the difference between calling your child Arthur, Mabel or ?Barbara?

All old-fashioned names, but the first two have come back into fashion before Barbara. Humph.

I like it. it was my Gran's name and I won't hear a word against it! Grin

CalleighDoodle · 29/04/2015 21:32

Oh i know a 35 yr old margaret and a 1 year old margaret. I love the shortened version maggie.

Barbara just doesnt sound nice when spoken.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 29/04/2015 21:38

I think it is fab.

People are often too short sighted to see that the trend for soft, frilly, girly names is just that, a trend. All those Evie and Ellie and -Bella and -ia names are fine, but not inherently better. It is like claiming that there is something inherently nicer about a harem pant or a wedge heel or a 90s Rachel cut.

Barbara is a brilliant name. You like it. It has meaning. That is what counts.

ps We used marmite named for two of our three. They are the two names I still love most.

salvadory · 29/04/2015 21:40

I love it. Cute and retro yet will travel well. I know a baby Barbara born this year (parents are Polish). Mind you I have a 3 year old Margot and considered Agatha for her also.

StAlphonsosPancakeBreakfast · 29/04/2015 21:41

I like it and I hope it comes back. Three of the most brilliant, inspirational, phenomenal women I've ever met had it as a name, and I would love to think it's coming back.

And you can always nickname her Barbarella. Grin

salvadory · 29/04/2015 21:42

Ps Basha as a nickname v cute too

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/04/2015 21:47

I like it ,good associations as I know a young Barbara who is one of the nicest people on earthSmile

Babetti · 29/04/2015 21:52

I know an absolutely lovely and very fun 27 year old Babs. She introduces herself as such. Definitely a Babs and not a Barbara though. I don't think she uses her full name for anything.

Peaceloveandhobnobs · 29/04/2015 22:22

You could all her Ella as a nickname, as in Barbarella Grin

shadowfax07 · 29/04/2015 23:01

The only Barbara that I know is incredibly kind and thoughtful, late thirties/early forties, prod buttock Maths teacher with a wicked sense of humour. There are worse names to be called, tbh.

browneyedgirl86 · 29/04/2015 23:06

I know a baby girl called Porscha (named after the car she was conceived in, I kid you not)

Next to that Barbara is fine. Names come and go. If you like it that's what matters.

FirCoat · 29/04/2015 23:12

I love it and think it's really cool, bit like Virginia, Susan, Valerie. Jean etc love the nn Babs too.

guffaux · 29/04/2015 23:52

i know a fab barbara = mid forties (maybe 50_), never gets full name though gets called bea -we all thought she was a beatrice - bea suits her/

rebelfor · 29/04/2015 23:54

I'm doing a cat's bum face.

laughingcow13 · 29/04/2015 23:58

I like it a lot!
