Name changed for this as will definitely out myself. Announced baby's name as Barbara to honour relative but have got lots of Confused. One person says dd will get bullied.

AIBU to call her this? I think it sounds lovely!

I think I'd ctry and have to surpress my facial expression if someone told me their newborn was called Barbara. It sounds like the name of someone my name. It is very much a late middle aged woman's name. On a par with Marion or Jean.

Raffertys · 23/05/2015 05:54

I'm afraid I did the cat's bum face just reading the name in the thread title.

Dowser · 23/05/2015 08:37

Barbara is like Margaret to me. Two difficult names with three syllables to say quickly.

Nothing wrong with the names. In fact Barbara sounds more modern than Margaret.

She will probably get Bar-bra, rather than the longer version. She may get Babs, Baby, Babsy, Barbie...I just hope she doesn't get Ba. I met a Ba once and it was just dreadful.

Dowser · 23/05/2015 08:47

I've never liked the name Agnes. Don't know why but there it is.

When I was at school a friend lived near our French, French teacher. She mentioned her daughter Anya.

That's a nice name I said. How do you spell it.

Agnes!

It's all in the pronunciation.

EveryPenny1 · 23/05/2015 10:25

Barbara is a great name, I know a few and they never got teased! Much better choice that the so called trendy names when you end up with 5 in a class or the traditional names with a quirky spelling.

I picked names that we not in the top 100 for my children!

IndridCold · 23/05/2015 11:24

It just makes me think of Mrs Overall saying 'Right you are Miss Babs!' On Acorn Antiques...

balletnotlacrosse · 23/05/2015 21:55

I love the name Barbara. It's Enid Blyton, Chalet School, old fashioned childhood and comforting and nostalgic.

DancingDinosaur · 23/05/2015 22:03

I don't like the name Barbara, nothing to do with it being old fashioned, just never liked it. I like Margaret and Agnes, and plenty wouldn't like those either. Its just personal taste really. If you like it then use it. Once people get used to it then it will probably sound quite nice, as your obviously adorable and beautiful child will be associated with that name. I prob don't like it because its mils name. But I quite liked Barbara from the good life and the name seemed different on her. I'm probably making no sense.

Ham69 · 23/05/2015 22:09

Sorry, you did ask. Really not a fan. Lovely as a middle name though.

sykadelic · 23/05/2015 23:15

It's my middle name, named after the middle name of a close relative.

Some people tried to tease me about it but I never really saw a problem. I know an adult Barbara and everyone called her Barb.

As other people mentioned about though, most people say "Bar-bra" which just reminds me of a joke...

What do you call a black sheep in lingerie?
Bra-bra black sheep

UptheChimney · 26/05/2015 15:14

Are you Victoria Coren, OP?

halcyondays · 26/05/2015 15:20

I like Barbara. I don't see why a Barbara would be bullied, it might not be the most popular name at the moment but it's not a particularly strange name.

1Morewineplease · 26/05/2015 15:43

Go with it ikeep... It's lovely, unusual and sounds like a friendly name. Being in my fifties and working in an infant school I've seen and heard so many trends.. I vividly remember George being so uncool years ago and look at it now! There are so many names that used to be deeply unpopular.. Violet, Iris, Theo etc... That are very popular now although I don't think "Nobby" will be coming back any day soon!

balletnotlacrosse · 26/05/2015 16:39

I bet by the time your dd is a teenager Barbara will be starting to creep back into fashion, along with Pamela, Jill, Janet and other names that are considered uncool at the moment. And then she will be ahead of the curve amongst all the Olivias, Rubys and Avas.

Fingeronthebutton · 26/05/2015 16:43

It's one of those 'no names' it's neither fish nor fowl. Just nothing.

ollieplimsoles · 26/05/2015 16:46

IndridCold

I thought Acorn Antiques too! "She's choking on her own macaroon!" XD

YsabellStoHelit · 26/05/2015 16:50

It is old fashioned. I don't know anyone under 50 with the name. Names go in trends so it may come back. Who knows?

Try saying you've changed it to Gertrude and see if you get the same reaction...

Echocave · 26/05/2015 16:51

My mum and dad had a friend in the '60's called Barbara and she shortened it to 'Bubbles'. So brilliantly hilarious. I never met La Bubbles but I did imagine her in a flowing green kaftan, glass in hand, welcoming in her friends for a little do.
My mum's middle name was Barbara and as I adored my Mum, I have a soft spot for the name.
Bubbles of the World, unite!!

BettyCatKitten · 26/05/2015 16:51

are you Victoria Coren? Op
I wandered too!
Op, even if you're not, then the fact her dd has this name gives it some kudos Grin

Floisme · 26/05/2015 16:58

There was a Barbara in my class who shortened it to 'Basher'. No-one bullied her I can promise you Grin
