Name changed for this as will definitely out myself. Announced baby's name as Barbara to honour relative but have got lots of Confused. One person says dd will get bullied.

AIBU to call her this? I think it sounds lovely!

OP posts:
LemonYellowSun · 01/05/2015 19:44

I have a friend (same age) called Barbara. And I really like it.

MehsMum · 01/05/2015 20:01

I know someone who called her baby Nevaeh. It really exists.
In rural England, too.

florascotia · 01/05/2015 21:01

Barabra appears in many variations, from doll-like US 'Barbie' to passionate Russian 'Varvara' (as in Turgenev's 'Home of the Gentry').

For 'family tree' of related names: www.behindthename.com/name/barbara/tree

All the Barbaras (and one Swedish Barbro) I've met (various age groups) have been lovely. Go for it!

duplodon · 01/05/2015 21:53

Why in God's earth would someone be bullied for being called Barbara? Really? It's not Mike Hunt or Axl Trinidad Moonbean the 7th. It's just an ordinary name Confused

duplodon · 01/05/2015 21:58

Also OP I had loads of Cats bum faces for Oisin, my little boy. The midwife was even a bit sarky about it. Fast forward five months and we've moved back to Ireland and it's in the top twenty names. All context.

orangeformica · 01/05/2015 22:03

My neighbours cat is called Barbara. I wouldn't make a cats bum face about a baby Barbara but I am a big Carry on fan.

80sMum · 01/05/2015 22:11

OP, take heart! I had the same reaction when I announced DD's name (over 30 years ago). It was a very unusual name for a baby at the time; people said "but that's an old lady's name".
Throughout her childhood, DD was the only girl in her school with that name, but it slowly became more popular and a few years ago it was the number one girls' name. So, I was about 20 years ahead of a trend,
Names go in and out of fashion. I rather like Barbara. I think it's due a comeback.

grannytomine · 01/05/2015 23:00

I went to school with a Barbara, she was very attractive and was a very glamorous teenager, always loved lovely and her hair and make up were perfect. I was more dragged out of a hedge sort of girl and envied her so I see it as a name for a beautiful woman, which I am sure your little one will be one day.

I hate people being rude about babies names, my mother cried about my sons name but she loved it in the end. A woman I worked with became a grandmother, she was so excited. The baby was called Beatrice, which is a name I don't like and I don't know why but I just don't but I smiled and said how lovely. A year later my grandson was born, when I said his name she said Oh I don't like that. I was so tempted to say well at least its not Beatrice.

crje · 01/05/2015 23:14

My sister is Barbara & is fab
It's a lovely name , it leaves her room to be who she wants.
If you call her a 'cool' name the name takes over imo

Apricota · 02/05/2015 21:19

Sorry yukyk

lillighters85 · 02/05/2015 21:37

I think it's lovely. Barb is a sweet shortening and there's nothing worse than being the same as everyone else. There were 4 Rachels in my primary class and it was rubbish.

FuzzyWizard · 02/05/2015 21:54

I know a teenage Barbara. She's lovely and not bullied at all. I've never come across name-based bullying in the girls school I teach in despite coming across lots of "old fashioned" names. Mary, Esther, Tracy, Thelma, June, Florence, Susan, Beulah, Karen, Paula. None bullied for their names.

FuzzyWizard · 02/05/2015 21:57

We also have at least 4 Sandras that I can think of and we probably have more than that. Amongst the teens I teach Sandra is a fairly common name.

Mrsstarlord · 02/05/2015 21:58

Didn't like it to start with but Its growing on me.

dontcallmelen · 02/05/2015 22:45

OP its a lovely name, maybe biased though as my lovely mum was Barbara Violet, she was beautiful & gentle.

funnyossity · 02/05/2015 23:31

I am liking it more and more!

Juniper44 · 03/05/2015 00:12

Barbara Vine died today. Surely DD's name can be in commiseration?

NiceBitOfCheese · 03/05/2015 10:40

Are you the Duchess of Cambridge?

LeoandBoosmum · 03/05/2015 15:14

If you want honest, I have to say, for me it is terrible, really bad, probably the last name I would choose (if I had to!) I would swallow my dislike though and give it as a middle name if I really wanted to honour a family member.
It just sounds so middle-aged and frumpy. There are so many beautiful names out there that I would choose one of those and use Barbara as a middle name (unless, of course, the Barbara you are honouring is still alive and has had the news shared with her...then that's a toughie..)
Sorry to be so brutally honest but I think you wanted honest opinions.

LittleIda · 22/05/2015 20:35

Well I think it's lovely David and Victoria. Wink

sunniest · 22/05/2015 21:00

For a moment i was thinking the Beckhams had snuck another one out but then realised who you meant!

chaletdays · 22/05/2015 21:14

I love the name Barbara. Pretty and vintage Smile

IvyBean · 22/05/2015 21:36

My grandma hated her name Matilda and look how popular it is now. It's odd as I kind of understood why she hated it but love it now.Wish I'd snuck it in to dd's name as I miss my grandma a lot and it would have been a nice thing to have.

Ime kids don't really tease over names anyway. They tend to go through school as a class and are well used to each other's names. You wouldn't believe some of the names I've seen on class registers.

Enjoy.

mousmous · 22/05/2015 21:40

it's a nice name.
you like it and it obviously has sme meaning for you.
people will get used to it.
I'm sure your dd is just lovely!

TTWK · 22/05/2015 21:52

Well I think it's lovely David and Victoria. wink

Yes, I saw that news today. I think Barbara is cool.
