To cancel my Bednest pre-order

BumWad · 24/04/2015 09:45

Thought we were getting a really good deal, have pre-ordered the Bednest rental £79 for a whole 7 months. Except have been reading about the death of a 7 week old which the coroner has put down to the Bednest.

I can't quite work out what has happened through reading the articles but the NCT has withdrawn all sales of the Bednest too.

www.madeformums.com/news-and-gossip/bednest-nct-stops-selling-bedside-crib-following-death-of-7-week-old-baby/37770.html

This will be a very precious baby as I have had a previous stillbirth, and so anxiety levels are at a high. Really wanted a bedside crib but the Snuzpod and Chicco Next to me don't go high enough for our humoungous bed.

Opinions please?

YANBU. The report I saw said the baby was put down prone, and somehow managed to get her head over the dropped side rail, then couldn't lift her head up to take pressure off her windpipe and suffocated Sad NCT have withdrawn them from sale.

We use a normal cot, with the base at the same height as our mattress and the side removed. Bungee cord it to the bed and fill in the gap between mattresses.

Best of luck for your LO arriving.

cailindana · 24/04/2015 09:51

Yes, cancel it. You don't need the stress. If you have room, just put an ordinary cot beside your bed and stick the baby in there after every feed. I've never seen those bednest things before but they look odd - the removable side is weird. Why do they tilt??

IMO when it comes to baby's safety the less gadgety it is the better. You can't beat straightforward crib or cot.

Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy - look after yourself Flowers

madreloco · 24/04/2015 09:51

just use a moses basket, fraction of the price and safely used for millenia. You don't need gimmicks.

BrianButterfield · 24/04/2015 09:52

I did what bakingtins did, a normal cot bungeed to our bed. It felt very safe as I rolled up blankets and used them to stuff the sides of the mattress so baby's matress was pushed up tight to ours with no gap. Then I made sure the sheets were layered over the join.

Yanbu. It is a dangerous product.

Use a Moses basket. Or co-sleep. There is no evidence that co-sleeping is dangerous, if it is done safely (ie on a bed, not a sofa, and you aren't drunk/a smoker)

MangoJuggler · 24/04/2015 09:58

Yanbu

Use a moses basket or planned co sleeping

Those poor parents

RoboticSealpup · 24/04/2015 09:59

YANBU.

My family think I'm a bit neurotic but I've actually got one of these plastic mattress-wrappers from new zeeland, as there is a theory about toxic gases in mattresses causing SIDS. (Can be bought here: www.babymattresscovers.com/) Even if this theory turns out to be wrong in the future, NO babies have died from SIDS on a wrapped mattress. So at the very least it does no harm, and both DH and I sleep easier for it.

LeoandBoosmum · 24/04/2015 10:00

One baby is one baby too many. Don't take the risk. I don't know why pre-orders haven't been cancelled at source (by the company) immediately. There should also be an immediate recall of those already sold. I echo others' thoughts that you should opt for a regular cot (would avoid bumpers though as, while still sold everywhere, babies have been known to suffocate/ have accidents.)

RoboticSealpup · 24/04/2015 10:00

fluffy

avocadotoast · 24/04/2015 10:02

Oh this is so sad, that poor family.

We've bought a Babybay crib, which I imagine (hope!) wouldn't have the same risks as it doesn't have a removable side? So in a way it is just like having a cot bungeed to the bed.

MrsCaptainReynolds · 24/04/2015 10:03

I have a bednest, have used it with two babies and would use it again. But I wouldn't buy or rent one now, simply because there are enough things to be anxious about!

But used without tilting (for reflux) and with the side completely up, or completely down, and baby on its back, I can't see how it's more dangerous than any other option. So I expect I'd use it again, following these rules.

Another reason to cancel your order is that 7 months is optimistic. Bednests are small and shallow -both my average sized babies have moved on from it at 5 months.

GozerTheGozerian · 24/04/2015 10:03

Well i am currently using one for DS2 and it has been great. I don't know the exact particulars of how this awful situation arose but it does sound like a combination of factors which have led to the terrible outcome.

I am totally confident in it but I've also gone through the info again to double check I am using it properly.

I don't know enough about the other products to know how they compare but I'm going to keep on using mine as it's been so convenient and made a huge difference to our sleep. I would imagine if the others don't quite fit your bed that's going to be more of a risk factor?

It's so hard though and does hit close to home when it's a product you use. That poor family - I can't even imagine how awful this must be for them. My heart really does break for them.

MooMaid · 24/04/2015 10:03

How sad.

I agree cancel the order if it's going to cause you stress. It won't be an issue for some parents and they'll use it according to the instructions without incident but if it'll cause you worry, it's not worth proceeding with

RoboticSealpup · 24/04/2015 10:03

"There is no evidence that co-sleeping is dangerous, if it is done safely"

Fluffy... My sister woke up one night with the baby fully covered by the sheet she was using as a blanket, red hot and soaking with sweat. I dread to think what would have happened if she hadn't woken up when she did.

kinkyfuckery · 24/04/2015 10:04

If I follow properly, the tragic death was a result of improper use. I've not seen anything to suggest that if the Bednest is use correctly it has significant risk.
But it is not worth the stress. I'd cancel your order and think about other options - cot, crib, moses basket or co-sleeping.

weebarra · 24/04/2015 10:04

I used a co-sleeper cot with DC3, not a bed best though and there was no way the side could be left partially up. Might be worth researching different types? Such a sad story though.

Lilicat1013 · 24/04/2015 10:05

We had a Katie crib next to but separate from the bed, it was perfect. I wouldn't have any thing that attached the the bed as I am epileptic.

This situation seems like a tragedy that happened due to a series of things going wrong (baby put to sleep on her front, side left down and baby being able to push her head over the side). It is unlikely this series of events would happen again especially if you followed the instructions to the letter but for me personally it wouldn't be worth the worry.

To a PP who asked about the tilt, it is for colic or reflux. I used space blocks under the crib and cot and they are brilliant. Both my boys had colic and it seemed to help. Great when they had a cold as well.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 24/04/2015 10:10

Y most definitely not B U.
I thought they'd all been with drawn from sale in any case.
Sorry for your previous loss.
Congratulations on your exciting arrival. Flowers

ShanghaiDoll · 24/04/2015 10:12

I'm in a similar position as yourself as I'm due in 8 weeks and have bought a Chicco Next 2 Me. The news about the little girl is absolutely awful. However from what I have read what happened was that the product was second hand and they didn't follow/have instructions. For example, the side wasn't completely down, the tilt was 8cm so more than the recommended 5cm and the baby was put down on its stomach. The accident happened as the baby lifted its head up and put it down over the half folded side and suffocated.

From what I read the sale of the bednest has been withdrawn as they are working out what to do with making sure if people get one secondhand they still get the instructions.

My husband and have been mulling this over since last night and we're going to use the Chicco. Luckily it doesn't tilt more than 5cm or have the ability to half fold down the sides. However, my husband is having second thoughts about sleeping with the side of the cot down.

If you had your heart set on the bednest please don't cancel the order because of what has happened. I am sure that with your anxieties you will follow the instructions a little bit more closely. I just remind myself that this is a very very sad one off incident.

Anomaly · 24/04/2015 10:14

If you're worried cancel the order, you don't need the stress. But to me it reads as if the cot was used incorrectly, baby on tummy, unattended, sides lowered, and tilted too much. You might be better off just bedsharing. In the early days I would have the kingsize bed with just me and baby and DH slept in the spare room.

CatSwag · 24/04/2015 10:16

i nearly bought one of those bed nests

ended up gping for here
troll bedside crib, was v good
I only used to take the side down when I was awake though

CatSwag · 24/04/2015 10:18

here

this is the crib the first one I linked was the cot

eurochick · 24/04/2015 10:18

We had a Bednest and though it was brilliant. My (admittedly small) baby fitted in it comfortably for seven months.

My baby was prem and low birth weight so I was careful about following the SIDS guidelines as both of those things are risk factors. So she was never put to sleep on her front nor left sleeping unattended (save for a minute or two while I nipped to the loo or got a drink). The coroner's report makes it sound as though the baby was put down prone and not checked for an hour and a half. I'm not sure if that is right as I have only read the reported extract.

Any equipment can be dangerous if not used correctly (think sling with baby too low so the airway isn't clear, a car seat with the straps too loose, etc).

If it is going to cause you anxiety, OP then order something else, but I would happily choose the Bednest again, even in light of this tragic accident.

Anomaly · 24/04/2015 10:21

You need to get the risk assessment right. People saying use a moses basket or cot are ignoring the fact that there will be too many similarly tragic stories with babies dying in them. Much as would all love it we can't guarantee every baby's survival. All you can do as a parent is minimise risk by being informed. Thats why being a parent is both wonderful and terrifying.
