To cancel my Bednest pre-order

BumWad · 24/04/2015 09:45

Thought we were getting a really good deal, have pre-ordered the Bednest rental £79 for a whole 7 months. Except have been reading about the death of a 7 week old which the coroner has put down to the Bednest.

I can't quite work out what has happened through reading the articles but the NCT has withdrawn all sales of the Bednest too.

www.madeformums.com/news-and-gossip/bednest-nct-stops-selling-bedside-crib-following-death-of-7-week-old-baby/37770.html

This will be a very precious baby as I have had a previous stillbirth, and so anxiety levels are at a high. Really wanted a bedside crib but the Snuzpod and Chicco Next to me don't go high enough for our humoungous bed.

Opinions please?

You don't need more stress so cancel the order.

Look on ebay for a bedside cot, use a full size cot tided to your bed or as other said use a moses basket.

However we used a moses basket for ds1 and then bought a babybay bedside cot for ds2 as I found reaching down into the moses basket for nighttime feeds when recovered from an emergency c-section was not easy.

AldiQ7 · 24/04/2015 10:28

Oh fuck that's awful Sad

I really wanted a baby nest, but in the end, like others, we bungeed a smallish crib to the side of our bed and just made sure there were no gaps. It worked really well, DD loved it and it was so mic better than the Moses basket we had for DS.

It does seem that this is an incredibly unfortunate series of events, and that if used properly, there would be no real risk of this happening, but I can understand ou wanting to cancel the order.

All the best for your new arrival!

TheOriginalWinkly · 24/04/2015 10:28

Cancel your order if you're stressed but the baby was face down, unattended, side folded, tilted too much and on a non-bednest mattress that was apparently well above the maximum height line so that her head was far too high in relation to the edge. As a previous poster said, anything can be dangerous if used incorrectly. I had a bednest and loved it, and would still use it again.

MooMaid · 24/04/2015 10:29

We're using the chicco next2me although I know you said it's not an option due to bed height.

We're happy with it though but I'll be checking it again today just to make sure it's still tight against the bed etc. There are risks with everything, you have to assess what risk you want to take

stopeatingbiscuits · 24/04/2015 10:31

This is so horribly sad. I cannot imagine what her parents are going through. God bless them.

It does clearly sound like the instructions weren't being followed though.

I used mine for my second son and it is currently on loan to a friend who is using it for her son - he is now 12 weeks - and I cannot recall if I also gave her the instructions but if not will dig them out. Just texted her. This is horrible.

PerpetualStudent · 24/04/2015 10:39

I've got one on order & will still be using it I think, as PP said there seems to have been an unfortunate set of circumstances around this tragic event.
The thing Im really not impressed with is how long it's taken bednest to issue a statement - NCT (a big supplier of bednests) issued two yesterday, but Bednest themselves only managed to get something up on their website this morning...

RosesareSublime · 24/04/2015 11:04

op look at the arms reach co sleeper. has extra legs to heighten it

stopeatingbiscuits · 24/04/2015 11:10

Perpetual - I would have thought that they would have had to take legal advice before issuing a statement (and they are probably not used to having to act so quickly) which may account for the slight delay after NCT.

fluffymouse · 24/04/2015 11:36

I couldn't find the statement on their website. Wherever it is it certainly isn't prominent. If i was someone who had bought a bednest I would certainly want to know about this.

Methe · 24/04/2015 11:41

Surely if people are sensible with it then it's not more dangerous than a Moses basket?

"Parents currently using a Bednest Bedside crib are also being urged not to leave their baby unattended in the crib when tilted or with the side incompletely lowered" this is basic common sense

And surely we all know not to put babies down on their fronts.

nocake · 24/04/2015 11:41

Any child death is a tragedy but this appears to be a perfect storm of errors. Child put to sleep face down (against all guidelines), side of cot left half down (against the instructions provided with the cot) and cot tilted further than the instructions specify (yes, I've checked the instructions on ours and it's clearly stated). The cot design could be changed to stop it being tilted further than specified and to stop the side being left half down, which I expect is the coroner's intention in issuing a regulation 28: prevention of future deaths report, but if the instructions are followed there should be no reason why your child wouldn't be safe.

We have no plans to stop using ours.

MissDuke · 24/04/2015 11:46

Very sad, but I agree with the above - the cot itself is safe, it was the way it was used that was dangerous. This could have happened with any cot used incorrectly. Absolutely not blaming the parents, as obviously it was done unknowingly. I also am not comfortable with the manufacturer getting the blame though.

CuttingOutTheCrap · 24/04/2015 11:47

Are you sure the snuzpod isn't tall enough? We have a maybe bed with a huge thick mattress and it fits fine - might be worth checking? It is well worth every penny

Hippymama1 · 24/04/2015 11:48

Totally understand your concerns OP - we are in the same position and trying to decide what do do about our order... We are thinking of waiting for the outcome of the NCT enquiry but not sure how long that is going to take and baby is due in 10 weeks!

I think it would be helpful if the NCT published some kind of action plan, e.g. a policy to cancel or swap etc. Haven't been able to get hold of anyone this morning (we are still within the cancellation period) but if I get any updates I will post them here.

GraysAnalogy · 24/04/2015 11:49

It wasn't used correctly. It was second hand so came with no instructions, the baby was in the wrong position and an incorrect mattress used, along with a couple of other things.

GraysAnalogy · 24/04/2015 11:49

coconutpie · 24/04/2015 11:56

Second the suggestion on double checking the Snuzpod - our bed is high with a thick mattress and the Snuzpod worked great. Also I always zipped up the side when baby was sleeping so it was a perfectly safe environment.

Don't bother with a Moses basket - complete waste of money. A Snuzpod can last 6+ months! I'd highly highly recommend buying one.

Newquay · 24/04/2015 11:58

I feel terrible for the family obviously. It's a heartbreaking story. However I have the bednest (baby almost due to leave to
Go into normal cot at 6 months). I've also been co-sleeping. In my view, if the side was left up then this accident could not have happened. But I feel sick for the family as my goodness risks are everywhere. I too have woken up with my baby accidentally covered up and very hot. And that's even with me having taken conscious steps to co sleep (as opposed to just nodding off accidentally).

Ido find the bednest makes things far far easier than with dc1. But that said in your situation I would probably be quite worried. So do what makes you feel least stressed. Congratulations xxx

CapnMurica · 24/04/2015 11:59

I think you probably won't be the only one to be thinking that.

However, I think you should read the statement that Bednest have released yesterday because unfortunately, I think this is a tragic accident caused by incorrect use. It states that the baby shouldn't be left alone without both sides up (which totally makes sense if you think about it).

No one would blame you if you cancelled your order.

NerrSnerr · 24/04/2015 12:04

What this terrible tragedy highlights is the importance of following safe sleep guidelines. A 7 week old should have been placed on her back and not sleeping in a room by herself. Her poor parents have to live with knowing this.

Iggi999 · 24/04/2015 12:14

I have used a bednest and was very happy with it, however it is certainly something you would want instructions for before you used it.
I sold mine on afterwards and had lost the instructions - very pleased now that I downloaded them and sent a printed copy.
But if you're going to worry every day then just choose another option - I will never buy a Cosatto cot after reading a story about another tragic death.

Hoppinggreen · 24/04/2015 12:21

How about a Snugglenest for safer co- sleeping ( not that I'm sayng it's bit safe anyway.
It's a sort of 3 sided frame that keeps the baby safe as you can't roll onto it and they have their own blanket so they can't end up under yours.
It's also handy for visits to Grandma etc as it's very portable.
Mine was from Kiddicare but JohnLewis did do them too

ScathingContempt · 24/04/2015 12:30

I second getting a normal cot and taking one side off and tying it to your bed. Ikea gulliver cot is £55 and does the trick. If the mattress height isn't right, drill new holes in. It can be used as a normal cot if/when you want to stop sidecarring.

WizardofSnoz · 24/04/2015 12:41

YANBU! Do not listen to people saying 'Well we had one and my baby didn't die'. The judge in the case said they were dangerous and should be withdrawn from sale.

Lots of people leave small children unattended with large dogs and only a small percentage of them are mauled to death but a responsible parent still wouldn't do it.

Ditto this, just because one person used them and didn't have a problem doesn't mean they are safe.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 24/04/2015 12:44

that would be same as this :
