To cancel my Bednest pre-order

Thought we were getting a really good deal, have pre-ordered the Bednest rental £79 for a whole 7 months. Except have been reading about the death of a 7 week old which the coroner has put down to the Bednest.

I can't quite work out what has happened through reading the articles but the NCT has withdrawn all sales of the Bednest too.

This will be a very precious baby as I have had a previous stillbirth, and so anxiety levels are at a high. Really wanted a bedside crib but the Snuzpod and Chicco Next to me don't go high enough for our humoungous bed.

Opinions please?

I would cancel OP. Your anxiety levels are very high just thinking about it, imagine how much higher they'll be when using it. For you, it's not worth it.

We are using a bednest so I have read all these reports carefully.

From what I can work out, the crib was tilted too much and used with the side only a few cm up, so the poor little mite somehow flopped over the side but couldn't lift her head again so was effectively strangled by the crib side. I feel so sorry for the poor parents - who could possibly have predicted that?

I have decided to keep using the bednest. We have the side removed completely and no tilt. Baby always sleeps on her back. So I don't have concerns about safety. It sounds like a tragic, freak accident.

Having said that, yanbu to use a different sleeping arrangement if the bednest would add to your anxiety.

That's awful - I read this story and felt incredibly sorry for her parents. I've used a bednest with the side totally lowered and I can't quite work out how it happened. We had ours slightly lower than the bed so that the baby couldn't roll into our bed, and there isn't any way that could have happened. If it's going to cause you anxiety, then cancel it and look for a different bedside cot. Would the baby bay work? Or is that too low as well.

Thanks folks.

I like to think I am quite sensible and yes the baby was prone which was a major contributing factor. I have read more into it and agree anything used incorrectly is going to have a risk attached to it.

We haven't cancelled the order yet, DH is going to try and take the legs off our divan bed which will enable the Snuzpod to fit - which I preferred anyway from the beginning! But we may just keep the Bednest anyway.

I think anything that makes parents reassess safety isn't being unreasonable, I was looking at by Chicco Next2Me last night (surprise third baby after we sold all our stuff) and where the side folds down there is still a sort of semi rigid plastic fold. It's slightly higher than the mattress. I was trying to work out if a little baby could do the same thing, so flop over the edge face down. I think they could. My DD2 is nearly seven months, so can roll over and is quite mobile, but I don't know if a little baby couldn't get trapped in the same way :(. I'd never even thought of it as a risk.

Of course it's alarming when you hear that Bednest sales have been suspended. I'd literally just ordered a new mattress for mine for baby #2 when I saw the story.

But once I read the details, I realised that I've a) never put a baby down to sleep on their tummy, b) never tilted the Bednest, and c) only ever kept the cot side either completely flat or completely closed, so there's nothing to worry about.
