In thinking the garden centre should be more bothered and take the spidery yucca away?

End of March, OH bought me a lovely yucca to replace the one she had killed after 8yrs (RIP first yucca).
Last weekend, she noticed a huuuuuuge web in its leaves (think beautifully constructed trampoline).
In said web were hundreds of bright yellow spiders. Plant now outside and bin bagged.
She consulted Google Bellamy (she is far braver than me) and thinks they might be baby garden spiders but, of course, they might not be.
The centre delivers plants to our area, so I thought they might want to pick it up and investigate.
First call to garden centre, she was told 'just pop it in the car, bring it in and if you have proof of purchase, we will refund'. Slightly MN incredulous (I daresay I said 'I think not!), I got on the blower the next day.
I was told the 'plant manager' would call back.
Still waiting.
Will phone the manager manager today, but just want to check I am not being unreasonable.
Despite my loathing of our eight-legged friends, I feel slightly guilty they may have died in the bin bag. Alternatively, a tropical spider species has been unleashed.
AIBU to insist they pick up the plant when I call later?

Meh, spiders don't bother me, I'd take it back.

AlternativeTentacles · 24/04/2015 08:24

Good grief. A spider had babies. FFS.

TimeToGetUp · 24/04/2015 08:26

If your really concerned email them photos of the spiders.

They probably don't care that much really. It's a few spiders.

LurkingHusband · 24/04/2015 08:27

Something natural in something natural ? Who'd have thunk it ?

MTBMummy · 24/04/2015 08:30

Just unbag it and let the little spiders float away, are you aware of how much pest control they do?

if this is what you've got it's definitely garden spiders

AlternativeTentacles · 24/04/2015 08:32

There are probably more spiders under your bed than in that yukka.

snowglobemouse · 24/04/2015 08:32

what? you want the garden centre to remove your plant because it has spiders in it?

noblegiraffe · 24/04/2015 08:33

Lots of tiny yellow spiders with a black bit on their bum?

We've got some in our garden at the moment, if you blow on them Thry unfurl and scatter, then regroup and clump up again. They're quite cute. But yes, they are garden spiders and no wonder the garden centre isn't interested.

mrsfuzzy · 24/04/2015 08:38

try putting the plant outside in a light exposed sheltered area away from rain affected areas, keep it watered and the spiders will leave within a few days.
when it is cleared bring your yucca back indoors.

IvyWall · 24/04/2015 08:39

If you have had the plant since March, the spider probably came in from your garden and made its nest.

I love the fact that you binned a plant because it had wildlife on it.

Because plants are sterile yeah? I imagine the garden centre are still crying with laughter from your phone call, and that's why they can't call back to tell you that IT IS PERFECTLY NATURAL for spiders to have babies in or near plants.

can see the angle that op might have been worried, but she obviously is not a gardener or she would have realised what they were, no shame in asking, you never learn other wise.
op, sorry that some posters has taken the mickey a little, but now you've learnt some thing new.

msgrinch · 24/04/2015 08:47

Oh dear op you silly billyGrin

Methe · 24/04/2015 08:51

Are you serious?

Marcipex · 24/04/2015 08:51

Sorry, but yes, the garden centre staff are still crying with laughter.

If you take off the bin bag, the spiders will disperse in the breeze.

Catsize · 24/04/2015 09:24

I ain't goin' near that binbag. Let's hope they are not tropical killer spiders of doom.
Something that occurred to me on the way to work.... WHERE IS THE MOTHER????

Umm, er, No actually can't think of anything to say. Wait, no I can- have you tried a sad face and an article in the DM?

Is the plant bin bagged ready to go in the bin? eg- are you killing it as a result of perfectly normal spider interactions?

UsedtobeFeckless · 24/04/2015 09:29

Under your bed, probably ... Grin

liveloveluggage · 24/04/2015 09:39
