In thinking the garden centre should be more bothered and take the spidery yucca away?

End of March, OH bought me a lovely yucca to replace the one she had killed after 8yrs (RIP first yucca).
Last weekend, she noticed a huuuuuuge web in its leaves (think beautifully constructed trampoline).
In said web were hundreds of bright yellow spiders. Plant now outside and bin bagged.
She consulted Google Bellamy (she is far braver than me) and thinks they might be baby garden spiders but, of course, they might not be.
The centre delivers plants to our area, so I thought they might want to pick it up and investigate.
First call to garden centre, she was told 'just pop it in the car, bring it in and if you have proof of purchase, we will refund'. Slightly MN incredulous (I daresay I said 'I think not!), I got on the blower the next day.
I was told the 'plant manager' would call back.
Still waiting.
Will phone the manager manager today, but just want to check I am not being unreasonable.
Despite my loathing of our eight-legged friends, I feel slightly guilty they may have died in the bin bag. Alternatively, a tropical spider species has been unleashed.
AIBU to insist they pick up the plant when I call later?

HiddenHome would probably have taken them off your hands if they had been interesting spiders

Catsize · 24/04/2015 14:32

I have just thrown my iPad across the room in response to that photo snuggles - thanks! Grin
I like it that you are so convinced they are indiginous happy garden spiders and not flesh-eating tropical monsters. You may be right, but is it possible you're not?
I have tried to send a photo that my very brave OH took pre-bagging but they were all asleep then(!).
Wish my kids would sleep at the same time.
Anyway, photo not happening, sorry.

Ilove i really like your picture. Grin

CrabbyTheCrabster · 24/04/2015 14:44

Why on earth would you think that they are tropical spiders? Confused The yucca will have been grown in a UK nursery, I would imagine.

I am Grin at the thought of the nursery sending someone out to pick up a plant with some baby spiders on it though! I really wouldn't phone them back OP!

Catsize · 24/04/2015 14:58

If it was grown in the UK, that is fine, but we haven't been told that yet. I might still churlishly phone but am a bit more hesitant now. Blush

They may send someone round if you keep ringing.

Definitely needs a sad-face-and-Daily-mail story!

Catsize · 24/04/2015 15:46

Okay, I was so traumatised by your last photo that my heart stopped just a little bit with that one. But that one was very funny too! (And kinder).
Will phone shortly.
Need to practice sad face first.
Sad

Do they look like MTB's picture? They're UK and harmless, if so.

Catsize · 24/04/2015 16:24

Update...
I have spoken to the centre who said that the plants are sterilised before going to the centre (but were unable to answer how this worked -would it affect a burrowed spider?), and that the plant is not UK-grown.
I have been told to dispose of it in the garden bin and said 'are you not concerned this could be a non-UK spider?' and she repeated the sterilising point.
I may try and burn it (poor spiders - I do actually feel really bad about this) to be on the safe side. But I doubt a healthy yucca plant will burn very well. Poor plant too - it is lovely!
Oh, and when I say 'I', I clearly mean someone else. How do I deal with the bin bag issue?? She said just to hose down the pot.
The spiders didn't look like MTB's photo, no.
Ah well...

Crikey, where do you live OP? I could do with a Yukka.

If you're that bothered dose it with flyspray!!

I do think you're overreacting a tad...

AndWhenYouGetThere · 24/04/2015 16:30

You can just spray bug spray inside the black bag and then vacuum them up. Don't kill your lovely tree.

Methe · 24/04/2015 16:31

It won't have been grown anywhere tropical. You can't just grow plants in a tropical climate and expect it to cope with the British climate. It will have been grown somewhere in Europe, the Netherlands maybe.

You sound slightly unhinged.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 24/04/2015 16:33

drive it to the woods and dump it there then hope they are not homing spiders HTH

Methe, I am indeed unhinged but at least I know that Dutch spiders are the worst of all.
AndWhen and Phantom, the very thought of your solutions makes me shudder. Don't you know I bought a new Dyson today? (How very MN. From John Lewis too.)
Iknow, NorthWest. Feel free. Grin

Kitty, I might try next door. They are proper gardening planty types. Top plan. Mind you, if poor yukka and spiders have survived several days in a bin bag, I would be surprised. Does being vegetarian for 25 years mitigate 6,000,000 spider deaths? Hmm

The garden centre will not have imported yuccas from tropical countries - it would be ridiculously expensive when they can be grown in the UK.

im arachnophobic i know how you feel just freegle the plant and state it comes with spiders someone will want it

KidLorneRoll · 24/04/2015 17:01

So, you are going to burn a plant because it had spiders on it?

I'm sorry, what? Is it 23 days ago?

liveloveluggage · 24/04/2015 17:03

Don't worry that giant spider on the wall is a fake, this is the world's largest spider, it is found in tropical rainforests on giant yukka plants.

Catsize · 24/04/2015 17:07

Okay, not funny with the photos now! Well, kind of funny.
iPad was lauched across the room again though.
Will look at Freegle - never heard of it.
