To be terrified about filling a can of petrol

Lawnmower is empty and I've just mown two thirds of the lawn, it looks worse than when I've started. I know I need to man up and go to the petrol station, but I just KNOW I'm too clumsy. So if you see a young woman on the news who threw fuel everywhere and then burst into flames when she received a text... Bonjour!
And word of wisdom for not looking like an arse doing it correctly? DP is away at sea, and will cancel the wedding if he comes home to a lawn like this...

Oh I bloody hate doing this!! Have you got a proper can? I never know how full it is so I just fill it £5 worth which seems to last a fair while.

Of you're that scared then don't do it.

Could you wheel your mower down and fill it straight up?

mysteryfairy · 18/04/2015 12:00

This is the sort of thing that really stresses me out too. I'd just ask either another customer or preferably a member of staff to do it for me. Can you go go to a smallish franchise (i.e. Not the local telcos filling station!) and take that approach?

Sidalee7 · 18/04/2015 13:39

You can do it! I had to this week and didn't realise it only takes about a fiver to fill it up, cue petrol all over the forecourt (and my hands) ...

WaywardOn3 · 18/04/2015 14:01

Don't pull the filling handle thingy all the way up as you'll cover yourself with fuel - I did that and stunk :-(

Gently pull it so it releases a trickle of fuel. You can usually hear how full it is by the sound the fuels making
:-)

I did it, no fireballs and minimal spray while I figured out the best position. If I keep going at this rate I'll have no need for DP to come home...

I have to do this all the time for dp (he doesnt drive so i do it while I'm filling the car) I just tend to put 5ltrs in as thats what they hold :) Well done for doing it. I find at some stations you have to be in sight of the teller or they will come out to check you are using a correct container.

YANBU! Grin.
My car broke down ran out of fuel once where I live, which was only down the road from the petrol station, but I did not want to go and fill a can myself to bring it back to the car. Instead I waited in my car for my mum to finish work so she could come with me Grin.
I'm not sure that that's acceptable at the age of 22, but I was worried incase I couldn't stop the diesel from overflowing in the can?! Ridiculous I know...
