To be sitting in my car because I don't want to let a man I don't know into my building

I'm sitting in the car outside my flat because there is a man outside my flat (6 flats In total) who has been here for 15 mins buzzing to be let in. So far he is being ignored.

I see him on and off, he doesn't live in my building and I know nothing about him. I can't go in without letting him in I've had to do this before

AIBU?

A littl yesdo you think you know him

whothehellknows · 17/04/2015 17:52

Nope, of course you're not unreasonable to avoid letting a strange man in.

usualsuspect333 · 17/04/2015 17:53

Can't you ask him who he is and what he wants?

Sod sitting outside my own flat.

base9 · 17/04/2015 17:53

No. YANBU. Someone doesn't want him in, possibly.

Boutonneux · 17/04/2015 17:53

I'm a bit of a wuss so I'd probably do the same as you and wait for him to go.

bananayellow · 17/04/2015 17:53

Do you know if any of the others are in?

Stealthpolarbear · 17/04/2015 17:54

Oh I see. He's not waiting to see you. Misunderstood sorry

BlackDaisies · 17/04/2015 17:55

That's really annoying for you. The best thing to do would be to go in and assertively say "sorry, I can't let you in", then squeeze in without letting him get a finger past the door. However I would probably do the dame as you.

BlackDaisies · 17/04/2015 17:57

or even the same!

DownAtFraggleRock · 17/04/2015 17:57

I think i'd go to the pub Grin

WorraLiberty · 17/04/2015 17:57

No way would I sit outside my flat until he goes away.

I would do what BlackDaisies said.

Tell him the entry system is there for a reason, apologise and just let yourself in.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 17/04/2015 17:59

is there not a back door you could sneak round to?

00100001 · 17/04/2015 17:59

oooh, I wonder who is ignoring him.

Is he still there trying?

base9 · 17/04/2015 18:00

He could push past her quite easily. She can't know if he will or won't until she opens the gate.

00100001 · 17/04/2015 18:00

bookishandblondish · 17/04/2015 18:00

So this recently happened to me - turned out there was a leak in one of the flats and he was a contractor for the landlord. I simply phoned the managing agent while he phoned the landlord to check it out. Managing agent said let him in so did.
Waiting - he had to get in so was waiting for anyone. You could be in for a long wait if it's similar circs.

Fairenuff · 17/04/2015 18:02

15 minutes is a long time to keep ringing the bell though. Surely he knows no-one is going to answer so why does he keep trying. It doesn't look good, I would steer clear OP.

CaspianSea · 17/04/2015 18:04

Don't let him in. He might be hassling an ex-partner who lives in there.
I'd do the same as you, but if he was there ages I might let myself in but tell him firmly to stay outside. Say you have a policy of not letting anyone into building unless expecting them. If he pushes past you, call the police.

itsmeitscathy · 17/04/2015 18:17

It's all very odd, I'm in now. Someone eventually came down and let him in. I went in after. He's not a contractor, I've seen him before and he's very definitely not a contractor.

The flat I've seen him visit previously (he's been let in by them once before that I've seen) have the police visiting a lot. So odd.

Very strange to ring that long. If you decide to go in say you cant let others in so he is to wait until the flat owner answer. If he is a reasonable man he understand.

chipshop · 17/04/2015 18:32

I had this at my old city centre flat. Druggy party flat, occupants too out of it/music too loud to hear their buzzer. I had stand up rows with randoms wanting me to let them in.

When some lads physically pushed past me one time, I called the cops. Very unpleasant. Their drug den got raided, we also petitioned the landlord and the occupant was evicted. Satisfying.

I wouldn't wait around in future, go in, refuse to let him in and call the police if he tries anything.

itsmeitscathy · 19/04/2015 16:34

Just had it going out the way, pulled the door shut behind me and said I was sorry but I didn't know him (different guy) and couldn't let him in.now I'm worried Confused
