AIBU about this?

I recently had a local builder manage a project which involved creating a utility room in the garage and knocking through etc. he booked in all the separate trades and also did some of the work. One of the people that came to help him on a few occasions was his mate also a builder but had his own business. He came maybe 2 or 3 times over the month it all took. Saw the builder friend advertising so had a nose at his website and lo and behold there's my utility room featured amongst the other 'work we have done' photos with a written description of the project. AIBU to be annoyed that he is advertising a job that we didn't actually get him to do but he helped out his friend? To me it seems like mis-selling as we had no contract whatsoever with this person or their business name. Dh says it's a bit cheeky but no big deal and his friend probably knows but I feel I want to contact 'our' builder and tell him firstly that it's on there and also that I'm annoyed. What do you think?

I see what you're saying about it seeming cheeky, but if it's anything like my DH who renovates properties and uses various tradesmen, he wouldn't care less about one of the others using a pic on their FB page. They contributed to the work in some way so it's an example of their work as well as his.

Yes, YABU.

Doesn't really matter does it? He did some of the work, it doesn't matter whether your contract was with him or he was just helping out his friend. It's a bit cheeky but I wouldn't begrudge anyone trying to earn a living.

Pyjamaschocolateandwine · 17/04/2015 17:10

He had to advertise it's business. The other builder probably uses his pictures. You are bring a bit precious I think and really why would you care?

CapnMurica · 17/04/2015 17:15

But he did do some of the work! YABU.

ItsAllKickingOffPru · 17/04/2015 17:15

Depends how much of the work he actually did. To post it up as 'We' did this when he wasn't there much does seem a bit cheeky.

What would annoy me is pics of my house on the internet.

MincePieDiet · 17/04/2015 17:56

He came 3 times in total. Out of a five week project. That's why I feel a bit cross that he's passing it off as a project he has done. It gives people looking for a builder the impression that he can manage such a project when in reality he didn't.

Just not something I could bring myself to get worked up over.

Well, DH advertises himself as a builder which he is. He manages loft conversions, extensions, refurbs etc.

During one of those he would potentially use a carpenter for a week, a ground worker for a week, an electrician for a few days, a decorator for a few days, a plasterer for a day or two, maybe a tiler/glazer/roofer/gas fitter here and there at some point. What they all do doesn't take the whole time but it all makes up the finished project.

I think it's nice that you're looking out for your builders interests actually, but I don't think he'd find it unusual that the guy used the job as an advert IYSWIM.

ItsAllKickingOffPru · 17/04/2015 18:45

I'm with you, OP. He didn't project manage the build, he shouldn't be taking the credit for the whole build.
