to think insurance companies should talk to each other

Its car insurance renewal time again and once more I'm reliant on my old insurer sending me my proof of no claims so I can then send it to my new insurer. Why on earth in this day and age is this not an automated process or one that's on a central database?

Last year I went with the same insurer but had to take out a new policy with them because I found an online quote that was cheaper than the renewal quote. I STILL had to send them my proof of no claims so had to get them to send it to me from, presumably, one side of their office and send it back to the other
