I'm leaving for a six week work placement in an developing country on Friday and could do without this! Took the Canesten tablet orally yesterday morning but things have continued to get worse. I'm also feeling nauseous and shattered, if that's relevant.

Wise women of mumsnet, please advise me what to do!

No sugar - does that mean natural sugar too? Ie in apples? I don't gave much sugar but do get thrush.

Thrush tablets & cream on Amazon - so so much cheaper!

quirkychick · 15/04/2015 21:25

Gp can give you more than one pessary. I have had a course of 3 when I ended up having a swab Sad.
Boil your underwear & towels. Helps stop re-infection.

How do I know it's thrush? I have had it loads. If you're not sure, get it checked out first.

RusticBlush · 15/04/2015 21:27

Natural 'live' yogurt on a tampon - will work wonders very swiftly Wink

DamnBamboo · 15/04/2015 21:29

Take another pessary four days after first! It takes two days to work from first pill, so it's just not happened yet!

DamnBamboo · 15/04/2015 21:30

BUT the cream is good to alleviate local itching.

NotAnotherNewNappy · 15/04/2015 21:31

I soaked a tampon in live natural yoghurt and inserted. It helped loads Blush

SnoogyWoo · 15/04/2015 21:32

Microwave your knickers to kill the bugs.

FurryTrousers · 15/04/2015 21:33

Lots of great advice here. But also, you can get live bacteria/probiotic capsules from good health food shops (they should be in a fridge - maybe not practical for going away, but you could take them before you leave).

TheCowThatLaughs · 15/04/2015 21:45

Be careful if you decide to microwave your knickers! Mine set on fire in the microwave once Shock Grin

MsPavlichenko · 15/04/2015 21:48

Acidophilus. Tablets, high dose. Take a lot on day one and then reduce. Am evangelical about it. Had horrific thrush 13 or so years ago after trip to Madrid. Hot, wine, too much sugar.

Thought I had STD, saw a doctor, tablets/pessaries, nothing worked. Acidophilus did/does.

QueenBean · 15/04/2015 21:50

Some great advice here, the canestan pessary works a treat for me

Please do not douche!! Terrible idea!

DearTeddyRobinson · 15/04/2015 22:01

Last time I had a bad dose of thrush and was nauseous and shattered, I was pregnant Wink just sayin!

MiniTheMinx · 15/04/2015 22:04

Wash in natural yogurt! dip tampon in the yogurt and then insert, replace after about four hours with the same
eat as much natural yogurt as you can
Stop eating bread and wheat and if you are prone to this terror, continue to avoid all wheat and bread.

Bodicea · 15/04/2015 23:11

If it is thrush you feel like you have ants in your pants and cannot keep still!

NittyDora · 16/04/2015 12:09

Please be very careful when using tea tree oil on your vulva, I've seen some horrible things resulting from this, one when what I thought was toilet tissue stuck to the patient's gentials turned out to be her skin
peeling off. Sad

NittyDora · 16/04/2015 12:14

In fact, I'm going to say just don't do it or use any type of disinfectant on your frillies, it just makes things worse in the long run. Plain water is perfect with maybe the very odd, short term use of aqueous cream as a soap substitute ( don't leave it on) if your doctor recommends it.

dementedma · 16/04/2015 20:04

Not thrush. Apparently is bacterium vagin something or other....bloody itchy though! Got antibiotics

leedy · 16/04/2015 21:33

Bacterial vaginosis! You poor thing. Hope the medicine clears it up.

cozietoesie · 16/04/2015 22:13

As above - wash a lot but under no circumstances use soap or anything like shower gel/bath creme etc etc. If you can't use E45 wash or similar, just use warm water.

Curioushorse · 16/04/2015 22:19

Ah sorry this is added stress before a trip abroad.

Don't worry. I've bought thrush treatment in Yemen and Southern Sudan......and it was so much cheaper than here that I vowed I'd never bother buying it here again. Pregnancy tests and rehydration fluids are also readily available pretty much everywhere. Gone are the days when I foolishly stock up on malaria tablets, dioralyte etc. before a trip abroad.

saturnvista · 16/04/2015 22:39

Thanks for all the advice. Really appreciate it. The GP looked at it and decided it was an inflammatory reaction to soap with possibly a bit of fungal infection thrown in. She's prescribed some special soap/cream and said I'll probably use it for life.

queenbean why do you say do not douche? What exactly is wrong with douching (genuine question). I have douched every time I have had a bath (a few times a week - I don't do it when in the shower ) for the past 30 years and my insides have not fallen out.

AnnaFiveTowns · 17/04/2015 08:08

Your vagina has a natural and complex balance of "good" and "bad" bacteria. When you douche, you can upset this balance and it can lead to thrush or bacterial vaginitis (BV). It's a bit like when you take antibiotics, they can knock out the good bacteria too and give you thrush as a result.

I'm prone to thrush but the only time I've ever has BV was after I used normal soap and tried to douche.

If you've never had any problems douching then you're very lucky but I think for most women it would make them prone to thrush/BV.

prepperpig · 17/04/2015 08:43

I wouldn't put soap up there but do swill with water in the bath and have never had any problems.
