And nothing even comes close?

Yeah I agree the characters are not meant to have depth etc, that was the whole point of the last episode where they go on trial, but I think that's why while individual episodes are amazing, it is not the greatest sitcom ever?

toffeeboffin · 13/04/2015 13:23

Love Seinfeld! 'Hipster doofus', 'master of your domain', hilarious.

The writing is so good, its way above other American sitcoms.

And it's not just the main characters who are good, the sub characters are brill too. My fave is George's mother, she's so perfect in that role.

toffeeboffin · 13/04/2015 13:32

Not read the whole thread, so not sure if it's been mention, but Jerry Seinfeld is worth $800 million... Comedy pays eh! Grin

toffeeboffin · 13/04/2015 13:33

Fawlty Towers is my all time fave comedy though, so eccentric and British Smile Adore John Cleese.

Frasier and Only Fools and Horses.
If I feel down they always cheer me up

Ynbu. We LOVE it, have all seasons. Rewatch when a good period has lapsed.

airedailleurs · 13/04/2015 18:25

yes it's true, Father Ted is actually Irish...and thanks to the posters for reminding me of Rhoda (yes I do remember Carlton your doorman), a big influence in my formative years, and Bilko - actually the inspiration for the Top Cat cartoon apparently!

I also love Early Doors. Not many people seem to have watched it but it's funnier than the Royle Family .

UncertainSmile · 13/04/2015 19:26

Love Early Doors, especially the policemen.

ComposHatComesBack · 13/04/2015 19:55

I watched Early Doors when it was first on. The humour was so subtle and wry, that I found myself laughing at some of the throwaway comments years later.

It was so well paced and had a really deep thread of melancholy running through it. Easily my favourite comedy of the past 20 years.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 13/04/2015 20:07

It was by coincidence on in the middle of the night when I was in labour. Got me through the first few hours ! Crime can't crack itself .

ComposHatComesBack · 13/04/2015 20:13

DO you like circuses Tommy?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 13/04/2015 20:42

Grin temporary traffic lights on Birdall Lane

EastMidsMummy · 13/04/2015 21:28

I can't believe no-one has pointed out Father Ted isn't British!

Well, yes, but it was made by a British company for a British channel.

airedailleurs · 13/04/2015 21:33

but the writers are Irish: Graham Lineham and Arthur Mathews

Confused
abigamarone · 13/04/2015 21:46

Seinfeld was groundbreaking by being a mix of sketch comedy show and sitcom without much caring about breaking the rules of either
Hadn't the Garry Shandling show already done that?

meandjulio · 13/04/2015 21:48

Yeah you're probably right abig (abi?). God now THAT's a boxed set I must look into (googles)
