To say that Seinfeld is the greatest sitcom ever?

And nothing even comes close?

OP posts:

Roseanne was more groundbreaking than Seinfeld in female characters - Roseanne, Jackie, Darleen and Becky were all real and funny. Seinfeld was groundbreaking by being a mix of sketch comedy show and sitcom without much caring about breaking the rules of either.

I loved whatever bits of Seinfeld I ever saw but it never was much. I also imagine that it doesn't work well as a binge watch, too bitty - but I'll still give it a try one of these days. Fraser works brilliantly as a binge watch, there's always more to see in it.

Coupling

Two Pints

UncertainSmile · 12/04/2015 23:40

Tried it, but couldn't get into it. The slapped bass stuff set my teeth on edge too.

Tobyjugg · 12/04/2015 23:48

Coupling went off when Richard Coyle left it.

ComposHatComesBack · 12/04/2015 23:48

plonky who had am mullet in Seinfeld you ask?

Why Jerry of course! Check him out in all his bi-level glory.

Tobyjugg · 12/04/2015 23:49

Ditto Two Pints, went off when Ralf Little went. The musical episode is still brilliant tho'.

IggyStrop · 12/04/2015 23:49

It's awesome, the way it was written was so clever and fast-paced. I love the writers' motto too: "no hugging, no learning."

But OP, am very unimpressed with your "Elaine is one of the few funny female sitcom actors". Really? Have you actually watched anything other than Seinfeld?

UncertainSmile · 12/04/2015 23:51

Anyway, Bilko kicks Seinfeld's arse. As does Porridge, Father Ted, Black Books.

IggyStrop · 12/04/2015 23:51

I sing "believe it or not," too!

And seriously, Friends can do one. Massively overrated.

And seriously, Friends can do one. Massively overrated.

Oh god, yes.

CheeseBored · 12/04/2015 23:55

Ive always thought that there's a little bit of George Costanza in everyone....
He's such a horrible person yet still loveable

IrmaGuard · 13/04/2015 00:00

Seinfeld was glorious, and never descended into sentiment the way many other American sitcoms tend to do. (I love Modern Family and Frasier too, but they had/have their treacley moments).

Friends? Ack. Those women, pushing 40, all "ooh, he's soooo cute, I hope he asks me out..." They were like a bunch of teenagers. Not a fan, obviously!

AmIthatHot · 13/04/2015 00:52

Well, I've just spent an enjoyable couple of hours watching Seinfeld bloopers on youtube Grin

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/04/2015 00:57

YABU. I find some of it utterly cringeworthy. Some of it's good though.

Malcolm in the Middle. Consistently awesome. I liked when Malcolm and Reece (correct spelling?) had a competition to see who could eat the most amount of mouldy food at the back of the fridge before throwing up. Bryan Cranston and the disco roller skating was another classic. Father Ted and the Riverdance and hide and seek in the caravan....

Shakshuka · 13/04/2015 01:52

Agree with others on curb your enthusiasm. It's like an updated seinfeld. Brilliant!
I usually prefer British humour to American (hate the pcness, sentimentality) but seinfeld and curb really make me laugh.
Just thinking now of when Larry pretends to be racist to get out of jury duty but one of his acquaintances sees and the one where he gets a scalped ticket for yom kippur services and gets caught ?? I'm laughing just thinking about it

MidniteScribbler · 13/04/2015 02:28

Nope, never understood this show. I just thought it was a bit same old, same old, trying to be too funny for the sake of it.

Plonkysaurus · 13/04/2015 06:33

Compo I never considered that a mullet but you might be on to something there.

Seinfeld absolutely works as a binge watch. It took me a while to get the humour because it really is a show about nothing, but it's actually got a lot going on.

The characters are so consistent too.

SaltySeaBird · 13/04/2015 06:40

My DH adores Seinfeld and has the full set on DVD. I've tried to watch it and get into it but I just don't get the appeal.

Westendgal · 13/04/2015 06:54

Giving this some serious reflection....I think Elaine's character owes a lot to Rhoda and maybe even Mary Tyler-Moore. Loved Rhoda. Anyone remember Carleton the doorman?

Floisme · 13/04/2015 07:18

Ah love Seinfeld. 'No learning, no hugging'.

GreatAuntDinah · 13/04/2015 07:30

I can't believe no-one has pointed out Father Ted isn't British!

Hullabalooey · 13/04/2015 07:37

Love Seinfeld. As a family (of several different ages) we often watch old episodes together when we feel like we need cheering up and it always gets us laughing and talking about the episode afterwards! Hello Noo-man...
My DD and I watch The Middle. It's beautifully observed and written, very funny and even though it's about a somewhat dysfunctional American family, we constantly see parallels to characters in our own extended family Grin
Also loved The Green Wing and Drop the Dead Donkey. I heard there will be a new satirical DTDD-type show on C4 in the run up to the election. Called Ballot Monkeys I think.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/04/2015 09:29

DH also has the full set of Seinfeld. some of them are funny, some less so.
Never saw the appeal of Curb your Enthusiasm at all - watched a few, just meh, gave up.

OTOH, DH also has a full set of Only Fools and Horses - now that always makes me laugh! (and him).

Black Books - hilarious.
Father Ted - probably my favourite
Green Wing - didn't get it the first time I saw it, did the second, loved it (but not as much as Black Books)

Not sure if anyone's mentioned TBBT specifically yet but that's my new favourite - in a fight between Father Ted and TBBT, Father Ted would probably win though. Especially if it's the episode where Father Jack goes "level 6" - that's my favourite. Grin
