Is this name too old-fashioned?

Not pregnant but I really love the name Seth and Alexander for the middle name so Seth Alexander. If I ever have a son, I want to call him this. I told my mum and she pulled a face and mentioned an old man from emmerdale Shock.

So, what do you all think of this name?

Love it. Absolutely love it.

DS's name is Biblical. That got a few comments too.

tartyflette · 10/04/2015 22:25

Seth is fine. Biblical, I think. Alexander is a good name, doesn't really go in or out of fashion IMO.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2015 22:26

Personally I absolutely hate the name Seth tbh - but you are not pregnant and don't know me, so that shouldn't matter one jot! If ever you have a son, name him what you want - but remember that your OH's opinion will count too, far more than a bunch of random people on the internet.

Icimoi · 10/04/2015 22:26

Have you read Cold Comfort Farm, OP? I strongly suggest you do so.

Charlotte3333 · 10/04/2015 22:26

No such thing as too old-fashioned, you just choose something you won't mind saying for the rest of your life. Seth Alexander is a lovely, lovely name, but I love old fashioned names anyway. Others may not like it, only thing to think about is what your preference is.

TwoOddSocks · 10/04/2015 22:27

I came on this thread to check if it was my DS's name (a different old fashioned name). I think old fashioned names tend to become popular again after a couple of generations. (www.babycentre.co.uk/a567488/why-old-fashioned-names-are-so-popular)

My MiL hated our name choice too, I guess from their perspective they'll remember some grumpy old uncle that worked in a bank (the same way I'd think about a name like Nigel or Brian that was more popular amongst my parent's generation - no offence to anyone who chose that name) but after a few generations it develops a certain grace with age.

LapsedTwentysomething · 10/04/2015 22:28

There are loads of Seths around now, so no longer old fashioned, as such.

Icimoi · 10/04/2015 22:28

I've found my favourite quote from Cold Comfort Farm:

"Worst fears realised darling Seth and Reuben too send gumboots."

MabelSideswipe · 10/04/2015 22:29

I have a teen Seth. No one has mentioned the Emmerdale character for many years. The actor has been dead since he was tiny.

MargoReadbetter · 10/04/2015 22:30

Seth, Ethan, Lothario. I don't like the Middle th sound. But I'm sure it'd be different if I actually knew someone with those names.

Satsumafairy · 10/04/2015 22:30

I don't know any Seth's that are young. I love that name. Alexander is lovely too.

DramaAlpaca · 10/04/2015 22:30

I don't like Seth at all personally, but I don't think of it as being old fashioned because I've heard of a few around recently.

I can see where your mum is coming from, but the association with Emmerdale will only be for people of her generation. Most younger people won't be aware of it at all.

Alexander is a very nice name, btw.

florascotia · 10/04/2015 22:30

Seth is a perfectly good old Biblical name (and frequently mentioned on the baby names thread on Mumsnet, so presumably getting more popular). However, as ici says, do read Cold Comfort Farm first....

pressone · 10/04/2015 22:32

My nephew (aged 24) is called Adam. Can't get more old fashioned than that.

Yonkersdoodle · 10/04/2015 22:33

Ah, Emmerdale Farm. That great generation divider... Oh God I am so old

Bunnyjo · 10/04/2015 22:33

DS has a friend called Seth in his class - I think the name is gorgeous!

However, your thoughts and ideas will change with time; what you like now will, in all probability, be superseded by other names.

ShadowStone · 10/04/2015 22:34

I know a 3yr old Seth.

Maybe it's coming back into fashion?

AuntieStella · 10/04/2015 22:35

Well, this is Seth Armstrong, and he was in Emmerdale for nearly 30 years (double act in The Woolpack with Amos Brierley) and as neither name was in common use then, the association is pretty strong.

Children might not make the connection, but quite a lot of adults will.

WhatismyLife · 10/04/2015 22:35

I love it. Grin

BikeRunSki · 10/04/2015 22:35

Seth has had a recent resurgence. Not old fashioned at all.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 10/04/2015 22:36

Love it. Grin
Worth checking your initials though. Don't want a SAD/SAP/Sag nickname for school

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 10/04/2015 22:37

Nothing wrong with Seth,I think it's gaining popularity atm.

Alexander is an awesome middle name. Slightly bias, but everyone in my entire family from my dads side (and it's a huge huge family,I have 15 siblings alone..) all have Alexander as a middle name if male and Alexandra if female. That spans over 100 years and includes all generations :)

MangoJuggler · 10/04/2015 22:37

yy read CCF first afore a'mollicking ye go

Etc etc

PeppermintPasty · 10/04/2015 22:38

It's lovely.

MehsMum · 10/04/2015 22:39

I know two Seths - one about 20, one about 40.
Both of them are nice blokes.
It's a fab name.
