Is this name too old-fashioned?

Not pregnant but I really love the name Seth and Alexander for the middle name so Seth Alexander. If I ever have a son, I want to call him this. I told my mum and she pulled a face and mentioned an old man from emmerdale Shock.

So, what do you all think of this name?

I have a baby Seth, so I obviously love the name!

It's creeping up the popularity charts, but was still 80-something last year, so isn't super popular yet.

wowfudge · 10/04/2015 22:40

Seth Lakeman? Quite a long way from Seth in Emmerdale.

WorraLiberty · 10/04/2015 22:42

Seth has been back in fashion for ages. There are tons of them round here.

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 10/04/2015 22:47

Seth is great (so long as your last name isn't Smith. Or Starkadder, I suppose, but it's not very likely to be Starkadder).

spudholes · 10/04/2015 23:12

Glad that it is quite a well-liked name :) Hopefully it doesn't become too popular!

This was our name combo if DD2 was a boy and is top of the list if we go on to have a boy in the future. Good choice :)

MaryBerrysLostCherry · 10/04/2015 23:20

Read Cold Comfort Farm first. I like the name but love the book more so couldn't use it.

Devora · 10/04/2015 23:34

It's a lovely name and I don't think it's old-fashioned: isn't Seth having a bit of a moment right now?

JohnCusacksWife · 10/04/2015 23:48

Have to agree with your Mum and say Seth makes me think of Emmerdale. Love Alexander though.

MmeGuillotine · 10/04/2015 23:50

I used to have a massive crush on a boy called Seth (who had a twin called Caleb, which is also a great name) at primary school. He did not reciprocate and nor did his twin when I realised that I might as well fancy him too seeing as they were identical. Sad

I still think it's an ace name though. :)

squoosh · 11/04/2015 00:04

I know one who's about 40-ish. He says irritating things like 'howdy doody' a la Ned Flanders so I'm afraid that's put me off it.

I'd definitely say it's more on the trendy side of the fence than the old-fashioned side these days though.

squoosh · 11/04/2015 00:06

Yep, definitely on the up. 45 Seths born in 1996, 648 born in 2013.

Makes me think of Emerdale Seth and it is a very old fashioned name - but so many old names are popular now and there will possibly be loads of Seths in the near future. Not sure how I feel about Seth.

Met a baby Rufus recently which makes me think of a dog. Also know a Jonah which always sounds unlucky to me.

AlmaMartyr · 11/04/2015 00:11

Not too old fashioned, I like the name Seth. I do know at least 5 little Seths though (8 or under).

Cold Comfort Farm is one of my favourite books and it wouldn't have put me off using the name Seth but is definitely worth a read :)

leccybill · 11/04/2015 00:12

I like 'th' names like Seth, Ethan, Nathan and Arthur. The 'th' sounds softens them up.

mouse26 · 11/04/2015 00:13

I know of a 4 year old seth. to be honest, I did pull a Confused face when I heard the name the parents had chosen, but actually, the names grown on me.

besides, it's entirely yours and your dps choice - nobody else should get a say Smile

TheCatsFlaps · 11/04/2015 00:16

Seth is a lovely name. Alexander may end up as Alex or Xander - both get on my tits.

ScathingContempt · 11/04/2015 05:07

I had this discussion with my MIL - about a different name. Seth is old fashioned to her generation but to ours it is so old it's quaint and coming back into vogue.

I was mentioning names like Edith and Violet and she said they were old lady names. I pointed out that most Ediths and Violets were dead now and, at 75, the current old lady names were the ones of her generation! That shut her up. Then I used Violet anyway.

BikeRunSki · 11/04/2015 06:03

My FiL was similarly aghast when he met his new great nephew called Ethan. To him it's an old American name. He was amazed when I showed him last year's baby name stats, that put it at around 15th!

It's in the top one hundred names, I'm surprised people are surprised by it!

Probably made more popular by Seth Green, Seth Rogan, Seth McFarlane etc. Quite trendy.

FoulsomeAndMaggotwise · 11/04/2015 06:41

I had no idea Seth was an old name. I actually think it's quite trendy now.

but very American sounding! Sorry OP

Mehitabel6 · 11/04/2015 06:46

Alexander is lovely but don't like Seth at all, with your mother on that.

GammonAndEgg · 11/04/2015 08:23

I know a toddler Seth. It really suits him! Lovely name.

Box5883284322679964228 · 11/04/2015 08:26

It was on my list. Stunning

Pastamancer · 11/04/2015 08:36

My first thought on hearing that name is Emmerdale but you will never find a name that everyone likes.
