Totally expecting a flaming here buty local Bargain Booze is advertising Cow and Gate formula on a sandwich board outside, if nothing else it is illegal, but I also think I should probably mind my own business but it gets on my nerves. Think they should probably stick to booze. WIBU to say something to them?

He seems to be fine despite my failings in the BF dept though. Smile

fulltothebrim · 10/04/2015 12:18

you're putting your own preferences and ideology on other women's tits. You don't get to do that.

Formula companies are happy to do that.

LadyCatherineDeTurd · 10/04/2015 12:20

Never said they weren't fulltothebrim. That doesn't mean that nobody else is doing it either. One can, and should, object vehemently to both.

Cantbelievethisishappening · 10/04/2015 12:22

Woman want the choice. FF companies meet that demand. Nobody has the right to dictate what FF companies should or should not be doing based on their own personal views/preferences. Woman are given the information about FF/BF... what they do with it is up to them.

tobysmum77 · 10/04/2015 12:22

fulltothebrim 'good support' doesn't solve everything. Let's be clear on that.

Formula milk is the second healthiest food for babies.

Sparklingbrook · 10/04/2015 12:24

Good support can't solve every BF problem unfortunately. If only it were that simple.

Cantbelievethisishappening · 10/04/2015 12:25

Sparkling I also got my formula from the local health centre.

fulltothebrim · 10/04/2015 12:26

Not so simple.

Breastmilk is not a marketable commodity like breastmilk.
It's not just another type of formula. Many women set out to breastfeed but end up switching to formula ( often feeling guilty) because it wasn't their first choice.

If you want to talk about freedom of choices lets talk about the many many women who want to breast feed but end up using formula.

It's not just about information, it's about community and support.

Sparklingbrook · 10/04/2015 12:27

And now that's illegal too Cant. Blimey.

LadyCatherineDeTurd · 10/04/2015 12:28

No, I'll be talking about both. They're not mutually exclusive.

fulltothebrim · 10/04/2015 12:29

"like formula"- typo

tobysmum77 · 10/04/2015 12:32

So why try and make them feel guilty by barking on about 'support', thus implying it was actually their fault for not doing it properly? Why sit a mum whose baby has been admitted to hospital after extreme weight loss in a waiting room full of 'breast is best' posters? Marketing for breastfeeding surely.....

tobysmum77 · 10/04/2015 12:33

albiet shit, ineffective marketing

fulltothebrim · 10/04/2015 12:34

Of course- but that is the point.

I am all for freedom of choice- as you are. But half of all women who start off breastfeeding ( their choice) are no longer doing so by six weeks.
Did they all change their minds despite breastfeeding going to swimmingly well?
Or do they feel let down and disapponted because their choices were ultimately limited?

tobysmum77 · 10/04/2015 12:37

Well after dd2 I accepted that formula was best in my situation abd was totally at peace with it. With dd1 I was convinced, by people like you that with 'better support' it would have been different. This made me feel like an absolute failure and led to pnd, when in fact my instincts as a mum had in.those early days been absolutely right. No failure at all.

fulltothebrim · 10/04/2015 12:37

So we should withhold information about the health benefits of breastfeeding tobysmum- in case some people feel bad about it.

Nothing like sticking your head in the sand.

Much breastfeeding support is crap and can be hard to access.

tobysmum77 · 10/04/2015 12:38

Where have I said the health benefits shouldn't be shared? Confused

fulltothebrim · 10/04/2015 12:40

waiting room full of 'breast is best' posters?

Sparklingbrook · 10/04/2015 12:40

In my experience people who have BF without any problems and it was all a breeze have zero understanding of anyone who can't do it for whatever reason. I had a friend who was very dismissive and 'WTF' about it all.

I was disappointed for a bit, but I got over it, and moved on.

I wasn't on MN at the time and I am a little bit glad TBH.

Cantbelievethisishappening · 10/04/2015 12:41

full I BF one of mine and the other had FF.
The BF support bullying I had came from a MW and HV who kept on and on at me to keep trying to BF one of mine when it was clearly not going to happen. She was losing weight hand over fist until a different HV told me to switch to FF as the situation was becoming unmanageable.

LadyCatherineDeTurd · 10/04/2015 12:41

A mixture, fulltothebrim. However, even if literally all of them had been prevented from ebf as per their wish due solely to formula marketing, it still wouldn't be remotely acceptable to characterise women ffing as a problem because it stops them from being able to help others bf. No amount of whataboutery will detract from that.

tobysmum77 · 10/04/2015 12:42

How do 'breast is best' posters with some sickly image present the health benefits of breastfeeding? They are just a joke no more, no less.

Wantsunshine · 10/04/2015 12:43

Think I may go and stage a protest at my local SCBU. Those evil Drs and nurses have every type of formula and are force feeding it to th babies through tubes. All they need is some good support on how to BF properly.

Royalsighness · 10/04/2015 12:43

There are some very snobbish comments on this thread Jesus wept. God forbid anyone would by alcohol and formula at the same time eh? Must make them a raging alcoholic.

Often bargain booze stays open until 11, a mum could be caught short, have dropped her whole tub of formula and have nowhere else to go but there, I think it's great that somewhere like this would sell it and advertise it outside, if you are caught short and see the sign it could be a massive help.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 10/04/2015 12:58

SCBU

Also use breast milk. Both from mum and donated (if you can afford the donated milk bank) in tubes
