its not difficult to understand that you can fill up the car from either side

Why do so many people not understand this? Just wasted 10mins when running late as there was a huge q despite being free pumps! Sadly I couldn't get to them as other people were blocking.

I've driven vans and you can fill up either side. So there really is no excuse!

I can't use both sides in my car!

Cantbelievethisishappening · 09/04/2015 17:54

YABU
Some people find it harder to fill up from the opposite side.
It's not their fault you are running late.

mynewpassion · 09/04/2015 17:54

I do understand but I don't want to fill up from the other side. They should be polite and not block other cars.

TheWhiteRoad · 09/04/2015 17:54

Well yes you can. But if you're short like me you can't see the pump display from the 'wrong' side of the car. Sometimes I only want to put £X in and I can't judge that accurately if I can't see the pump.

britishbakeoffblues · 09/04/2015 17:55

Drives me mad but I understand if it's a particularly BIG car it would be hard.

OrlandoWoolf · 09/04/2015 17:55

Depends on the pump. Sometimes you can. Sometimes you can't.

ineedabodytransplant · 09/04/2015 17:56

bluebell, the OP means the hose will reach both sides not you have a fuel inlet on both sides.

OP, does my head in as well, although usually means I can jump the queue if all the 'thickies' are waiting for their correct side to be free Grin

Some petrol stations eve have big signs up saying the hoses will reach both sides but people still do it

WipsGlitter · 09/04/2015 17:58

I know but you have to drag the nozzle over and hold it at an awkward angle. It's a pain.

However people who pay then get back into the car, adjust the seat, adjust the mirror, fix their hair, open their crisps, check their phone, put their receipt in the special place - and the drive off. They should be shot.

Jengnr · 09/04/2015 17:59

I hate filling up from the wrong side. It feels awkward and uncomfortable and I have similar shortarse issues to TheWhiteRoad.

I'll wait ta, you go ahead and be all smug that you can read the signs. Because it must just be that I'm thick, there's no other explanation.

nickelbarapasaurus · 09/04/2015 18:02

nothing wrong with not wanting to fill up form the other side - I'm pretty sure that blocking the fucking way because you can't be arsed to keep a clear path for it is RUDE

There are many reasons why a person can't fill up from both sides, but there is no excuse for people to block the way for people who can.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/04/2015 18:03

I nearly always fill up from the wrong side because the pumps tend to be free on that side, i do look at all the people that have waited for the correct side and let me go ahead of them and wonder why they don't do it too, but never been significantly delayed by them failing to do so, so I've always viewed it as not my problem.

AlmaMartyr · 09/04/2015 18:05

Not all pumps reach that far, some of the ones round here certainly don't.

Andrewofgg · 09/04/2015 18:07

WipsGlitter They should not be shot. Far too easy. Boiled in oil.

ljwales · 09/04/2015 18:08

OK I didn't know some people don't like it, fair enough then just don't block anywhere.

I've never been somewhere where it doesn't reach both sides though, and I travel a lot. You do have to make some sort of effort to park in the right part

Twunk · 09/04/2015 18:09

I am generally a very competent person...honest.

But once I filled the car on the wrong side. There was a bit of "pull-back" elasticity on the hose. I'm not quite sure how I managed it but the nozzle sort of sprang out of the filler, and some petrol made it into and onto my handbag.... And onto my brand new mobile phone, which then fell apart as the petrol dissolved the glue... My handbag was unusable as was my makeup (also worth quite a bit of money).

So I don't use the wrong side pump now unless I really need to....

I appreciate my accident was somewhat unusual Grin

BackOnPlanetEarth · 09/04/2015 18:10

I don't understand this either I drive a van like vehicle and I've rarely come across garages where it's not possible for me to fill up from either side. I Get the impression that any normal large garage has long hoses on their pumps.

It's a fair point that you need to be able to see the display sometimes.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 09/04/2015 18:10

It's a real hassle to fill up from the wrong side IMO, so I never do, I will always queue for the right side.

OrlandoWoolf · 09/04/2015 18:10

I never knew that about petrol and mobile phones. Not going to try it though,.

Twunk · 09/04/2015 18:11

Don't. Smile

schopenhauer · 09/04/2015 18:12

Agree yanbu, there are often big queues at my local station even tho there are massive signs saying you can fill up either side! Is v annoying

I have a fear of trying to fill from other side and the pump not reaching, then having to get back in my car and join the queue again Blush

elderflowergin · 09/04/2015 18:14

I am quite short so would find it difficult, also the two places I use are both quite hard to pull the hose out so I would really struggle to do it on the opposite side. Sometimes you need to accept that you don't know other people's reasons for doing what they do so I think YABU !

FyreFly · 09/04/2015 18:15

You've never been to my local petrol station then OP. The hoses do not stretch at all. I can't even get them round my little Ford Fiesta. There are many stations where I can get the hose round either side and at those I am more than happy to do so if necessary.

OrlandoWoolf · 09/04/2015 18:16

I think that probably is an answer that could be used for a lot of AIBUs on here.
