It's my first house. my bf and I have been so excited and we've been in everyday decorating for the past week. The neighbours we are joined on to are so loud their dog never stops barking they bang ALOT and I can hear their TV over ours!

what do you do in this circumstance? I have a 6 month old baby so at times we are noisy.... do I ignore it as we can be just as loud? do I say something? but that could cause friction ..... wwyd?

It may just be that the walls are thin - look into getting them soundproofed.

EponasWildDaughter · 09/04/2015 07:32

What sort of neighbors are they? Are they a young family for eg.? Or an older couple?

I think i would wait until i'd been there for a couple of weeks before saying anything. Maybe get to know them a little first. See what the pattern is. Might be quieter during term time for eg.

I feel your pain. Wait a while you might get used to it. Once you have settled in work out what is the most intrusive and talk to them about it.

Soundproofing can be good. Really good sound proofing is expensive though.

Millionprammiles · 09/04/2015 08:29

If its day to day living noise and not late at night/early hours it will probably be considered reasonable noise by the Council. Frequent dog barking though you could speak to them about.

I'd recommend sound proofing (we've had it installed). There are two kinds: a separate 'false wall' or acoustic panels. Both are effective in muffling noise but the false wall slightly more so. You'd lose 5 cms or so in room width. Use a reputable company specialising in SP not just regular builders.

It isn't cheap but we had little choice (neighbours are a group of tenant sharers who like to play their guitars late at night...).

I wouldn't say anything just yet.

Is it morning and evening noise, overnight or what?

Have you met them yet?

findingherfeet · 09/04/2015 08:40

I wouldn't say anything either, chances are you LO will be very loud too at times...and you might have made more noise than you realised with decorating. Give it time and get to know them a bit then life will be easier if you want to mention noise to them.

addicted2cake · 09/04/2015 08:52

I would knock and maybe invite them round for coffee. Then bring up the thin walls in conversation and mention that you can hear them and apologise if they can hear you or your baby. they could be unaware they are being so noisy. Hope you resolve it and enjoy your new home.

HeartShapedBox · 09/04/2015 09:15

Some houses are just really crappily built.

We can hear upstairs' toilet flushing, kettle boiling, every little thing.
They hear us too.
Add kids and animals into the mix and it's carnage Grin

Won't be long until your baby's a toddler, OP, you might need their goodwill then.

PotteringAlong · 09/04/2015 09:17

Is it a new build? You might need to soundproof!

The80sweregreat · 09/04/2015 09:17

yes, agree with addicted to cake, go round say 'hi, hows things, we're new. ' and see what reaction you get. I hope they are the reasonable sort. I am lucky not to have any barking dogs next door, but did once and it was a nightmare. luckily I didn't live there long. if you look on your council website about noise, there should be some guidelines on what action you can take if it gets any worse. I hope you can enjoy your home.

Move, ASAP. Just not worth the hassle.

Moved into my first own flat and the girl downstairs came to complain about my noise. I was putting away my pots in the cupboard Confused

Once another neighbour came knocking on my door complaining about my "loud music." It was my The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe bedtime story tape Grin
