First Aibu despite lurking for ages. It's a trivial one.

My friend has an utterly beautiful 3 year old daughter, her only child. The kind of kid who is so pretty that she gets comments about her frequently. My friend is perfectly lovely, a wonderful person with her head firmly screwed on. You get the picture.

So, we meet for lunch and they walk in with matching Gucci bags, albeit her daughters is a miniature version of hers. She didn't buy it especially for her, it was hers from when she was a teen. I can't help but think its vulgar (obv didn't say this!). Friend is doing this in a v tongue in cheek way and thinks its quite comical but didn't mention it until I pointed it out. Surely this is off another planet behaviour. Admittedly I don't have kids so maybe ill change my mind when I do on this kind of thing?!!

If you had omitted the part about it being a hand me down, my reaction would have been the same.

I still think it's very weird of you to start a thread about a 3yr old having a similar handbag to her mother.

Of course if you were being made to pay for it, then I would say YANBU in the slightest.

WorraLiberty · 07/04/2015 23:12

Oh dear msgrinch I was just thinking the same thing Grin

houseofnerds · 07/04/2015 23:13

My son liked to carry a denim purse with diamanté spangles in a butterfly shape. The handles were toddler sized. I think it turned up in the house as a birthday gift for a small girl.

I have no idea why small children like carrying bags, but they do. (I should add, I've only used a bag for the last 8 years or so and I'm 44, so my kids weren't copying me at the time).

I think he just put random shite in it, tbh.

I have no Gucci bags, or other designer labels.

If she had bought a handbag specially for a 3 yo, I would be with you all the way. But she didn't. The small child was carrying one that was lying around the house, like most small children do. Because they like the whole open the bag, put things in, close the bag, open the bag, take stuff out, close the bag. Open the bag put stuff in, close the bag thing.

Little kids and bags. They grow out of it pretty quickly. 3? (And a bit earlier) prime bag carrying age.

msgrinch · 07/04/2015 23:17

worra Grin i was waiting for it Grin

fluffymouse · 08/04/2015 00:52

Yabu

My dd aged 4 has loads of handbags! None of them are Gucci though mostly frozen

MidniteScribbler · 08/04/2015 01:04

I think what is vulgar here is the judgement of a three year old based on her looks.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/04/2015 02:27

Before DH and I were married, we received a panicked call from a friend, "where is the bag of ponies?!!?!" Huh? "THE BAG OF PONIES. Is it at yours?" Her small person had left a bag of ponies at our house. How we laughed. Now we have several bags of ponies. Children love bags.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/04/2015 02:31

YABU to be able to tell (or particularly care) if a bag is Gucci.

Box5883284322679964228 · 08/04/2015 02:35

Like the fact it's a hand me down and tongue in cheek. I would have found it vulgar if it had been bought for the child.

mynewpassion · 08/04/2015 04:48

My nieces (4 between 2-4 years ) all carry small purses that my sisters and I use to own. Some are name brands. Some aren't. Some are shiny and some have fringes. They just love carrying them. Its fun for them.

Misssss · 08/04/2015 05:37

I'm obviously the epitome of vulgar. I've been known to buy my (exceptionally beautiful) dniece the same bag as me in miniature. I also gave her an old LV last week that made my friend go Shock. Actually wondering if this is a mixed up thread about me! Anyway glad you've realised yabu.

toomuchtooold · 08/04/2015 06:39

MrsTerry, I'm Grin at the bag of ponies. Ours is an owl bag from Tesco, it's fucking enormous, it contains a fairly constant cast of soft toys, two Doc Mcstuffin microphones and a collection of glad eaten melon slices. It goes with us everywhere.

ButchCassidy · 08/04/2015 06:55

Vulgar?
Think judging the three year old is vulgar.

Idontseeanydragons · 08/04/2015 08:10

Oh dear OP! Grin
You made the huge mistake of a) mentioning a child is pretty and b) mentioning a designer label GrinGrin
You will be judged at the highest level for both of those misdemeanours!!

Honestly though there's nothing wrong with it at all, children love to mimic other people and if your friend has Gucci bags to spare then it's not surprising one ended up being used by her daughter. My youngest (also 3 and very pretty Wink) has one of my old ones lying around somewhere. Not Gucci though..

slightlyconfused85 · 08/04/2015 08:12

Yabvu. It's an old bag. My dd has a hideous peppa pig bag- some people find character bags and clothes vulgar but it makes her happy so I don't really care!

GoadyFuckAaargh · 08/04/2015 08:27

I am shocked.

have you considered reporting this woman to the authorities?

god only knows what she will do next! Hmm

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 08/04/2015 08:31

Mother gives daughter an old bag to play with.

Is that it ? Confused

ssd · 08/04/2015 08:43

your friend sounds a lovely mum, why shouldn't she give her dd something old of mummies to play with?

you sound a bit mean.

Feminine · 08/04/2015 08:55

I think this was one of those very odd thoughts that sometimes cross our minds.

Unfortunately, this idea somehow propelled you to type it out on Mumsnet - in the Am l being unreasonable section... Of all places! Grin

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 08/04/2015 08:58

You know that feeling of 'should I?' just before you press post, you should have listened to that OP. Grin

sosix · 08/04/2015 09:02

I let my dd's have matching primani bags kind

Idontseeanydragons · 08/04/2015 09:05

If I had the money for 2 Gucci bags there's no way in hell I would let one of my children use one.. Just found the bag DC3 plays with. 6 month old play dough and something extremely unidentifiable stuck to the bottom. Hmm
Thankfully it's 20 years old and from a shop that went bust soon afterwards!

WD41 · 08/04/2015 09:06

Actually OP I get what you mean about it being vulgar. There IS something vulgar about a 3yo carrying a bag that cost hundreds of pounds, whether it came from the back of the wardrobe or not. Of course it's not the same as having a little bag from Primark.

Mind you, I think designer bags are a bit vulgar anyway, so I admit my thinking may be a bit skewed on this one!

Binkybix · 08/04/2015 09:07

Well I think if someone had spent several hundreds of pounds on a bag for a 3 year old it would be vulgar, but as its a hand me down then no.

But then I really don't get designed bags and think most of them are a but vulgar really.

Binkybix · 08/04/2015 09:08

Designer and bit FFS!
