to wish someone would teach those bloody Masterchef presenters about the correct use of pronouns? (not in the least lighthearted)

If John Torode says "I want to you cook something delicious for Greg and I" once more, I will fling a fucking fondant at the telly.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 04/04/2015 12:44

Oh bollocks is it learnt or learned?

thornrose · 04/04/2015 12:44

Every day's a school day! Grin

halestone · 04/04/2015 12:45

I stopped watching years ago as i hated watching them use Knives and Forks. And i can't abide people speaking with their mouthful. I don't know if they still do this but it use to really grate on me.

YokoUhOh · 04/04/2015 12:45

Jazz it's either. US English is a bit pedantic about it but in UK English either is okay.

Nanny0gg · 04/04/2015 12:46

One of those damn PPI adverts makes the same error.

And it's on all the bloody time!

(I clearly watch too much television)

editthis · 04/04/2015 12:48

The Kardashians all do this too, ad infinitum. Not that I watch KUWTK or anything Blush

Dumdedumdedum · 04/04/2015 12:48

YANBU - me've almost stopped watching MasterChef because of this. It irritates I no end.

Bluestocking · 04/04/2015 12:49

"Greg is a steaming bellend, as am I" is correct. "Greg and I are steaming bellends". Also correct. "Most people think Greg and I are steaming bellends". Also correct. "Could you cook something for my steaming bellend friend Greg and me?" Also correct.

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 04/04/2015 12:49

Oh kindred spirits! I always shout at the TV! And the use of 'myself' etc gives me the rage too!

Icimoi · 04/04/2015 12:57

Bluebananas, presumably you wouldn't say "Me am going to cook ..." So why would you say "Greg and me are going to cook"? How can adding "Greg and" make any difference?

Bakeoffcake · 04/04/2015 12:59

Language changes, as do the "rules".

Get over it Grin

BlueBananas · 04/04/2015 13:00

Because "me am going to cook" doesn't make sense "me & Greg are going to cook" does

ChaosTrulyReigns · 04/04/2015 13:05

nannyOgg I shout at the telly when that advert's on! Irvin summat isn't it?

It's people tryong to sound posher than what they am. ugh.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 04/04/2015 13:07

JT is myslef's weird crush, Mards. Let him be.

Thisishowyoudisappear · 04/04/2015 13:12

YANBU! The Real Housewives not that I watch them are terrible for this.

Icimoi · 04/04/2015 13:26

BlueBananas, it really doesn't make sense.

WasabiPeace · 04/04/2015 13:30

I have strong feelings about the use of 'less' when you mean 'fewer'.

I bark it at people at work sometimes by accident. It actually hurts my ears.

BlueBananas · 04/04/2015 13:34

Icimoi - it does

Dumdedumdedum · 04/04/2015 13:38

I blame the Queen. Ever since she used the old "My husband and I" as subjects of a verb on her Christmas broadcast, people have thought "and I" was posh and always correct, whatever the context, whether as subject or object.

debbriana · 04/04/2015 13:40

I have always used "Greg and I ". How is that wrong

Bluestocking · 04/04/2015 13:49

It's right if you're saying "Greg and I are here" - like "I am here". It's wrong if you're saying "Join Greg and I next week" because you wouldn't say "Join I next week".

Nanny0gg · 04/04/2015 13:51

So did I. And they were teachers...

Blush
Siennasun · 04/04/2015 13:53

The queen is no kind of role model. "Greg and I" is fine if it's the subject of the sentence, Debbriana. If it's the object, technically it's wrong, as Bluestocking explains above.
Having said that, I agree with BlueBananas "Greg and me are going to cook" does make sense - everyone knows what it means and it's used frequently so sounds normal now.
Grammar rules are fluid, they change with usage. I don't understand people getting upset about people saying things in a slightly different way. Why does it matter? it really doesn't

ihatethecold · 04/04/2015 13:54
Confused Too confusing!
iwouldgoouttonight · 04/04/2015 13:58

Bluestocking steaming bellend Grin

Saying less when it should be fewer annoys me too but when I say fewer it makes me feel as though I'm showing off.

Saying utilise when they mean use really annoys me too.
