WIBU about cafe seating?

went to a popular local cafe today to meet a friend - we both have a toddler.
I was there 5 mins early and spotted a 4 table tucked in the corner, plonked ourselves down to wait for friend.
no sooner had i sat down when a lady asked if she and her god-daughter could join the table for lunch - and gestured to the two empty seats....so i said sorry but friends were about to arrive for lunch. she tutted and went off and sat on the empty sofa across the cafe.
2 mins later a single lady arrived and asked if she could sit down - so i said we are waiting for friends, she is welcome to sit down for a quick cuppa but we would need the seats for lunch in the next 10 mins. she looked at me and said oh i'll find another cafe in the village.....and i said - or you could have the empty table next to the door - she smiled said oh yes and sat there and few minutes later her friend arrived and they ordered lunch etc.
my friend arrived and we had a lovely time - stayed just under an hour and were happy.

should i have let the people sit down - neither had ordered - like me they were trying to sit, get sorted in order to give a table number to order. there were also seats available for both women who needed one.

i didn't think IWU, but i guess the women who tutted did......if you are waiting for guests to join your table what do you do?

Sit there with my bitch face on glaring at anyone nearby. Nobody ever asks if they can join me Grin

So people asked to sit with you even though there were at least two empty tables? One being right next to you??

OwlinaTree · 03/04/2015 19:11

You were fine.

WhatismyLife · 03/04/2015 19:18

I don't quite get it. There were two other empty tables yet two other people wanted to sit with you?

EveBoswell · 03/04/2015 19:22

Why didn't you wait outside for your friend?

VivaLeBeaver · 03/04/2015 19:26

Were you sat with no drink or food?

BooChunky · 03/04/2015 19:27

I don't understand why anyone would chose to sit with you when there were empty tables?

Theycallmemellowjello · 03/04/2015 19:34

No you were not in the least unreasonable. Totally normal behaviour. The tutting woman was unreasonable as there were other seats.

technically yes 2 empty tables - one low table with sofa, sofa opposite was occupied. other empty table was next to the door (not next to me).

it was raining outside - i didn't think about waiting outside, we just go inside and sit down, get sorted etc, often order a drink in case the other is running late (as was often the case when our toddlers were smaller)

yes we sat with no food/drink. the table was dirty when we arrived - as we were sitting down the waitress cleaned the table and gave us the menu, i said a friend was on her way she said no probs....she arrived within 5mins, and we ordered almost straight away.

i figured it was normal cafe behaviour lol
