Cult kids things you just don't "get" - Frozen, Where The Wild Things Are

Frozen, sorry folks I just don't understand why it is so popular and why do lots of small girls want to be Elsa, Anna is much more heroic.

Where the Wild Things Are - I understand it, well I think I do, but I don't rate it as one of the great books, good illustrations but hey.

Also I struggle a bit with some Oliver Jeffers stuff - Stuck - my DS loves it.

I was just the right age when pokemon came out, and have loved it ever since. Imagine having a pet, but with frikkin magic powers! I'm hurtling towards thirty and have a gba emulator on my phone, just to play it. So sad Blush.

I don't get minecraft though. Growing up, watching games become more advanced, sleeker, complex and visually beautiful, and THAT is a popular game in this age. Urgh, awful.

I don't get Frozen, but then again most Disney characters are walking/talking stereotypes to me. Quirky, 'adorkable' ones are the worst.

fattymcChocolateEgg · 03/04/2015 13:43

itsnotme I still have a gameboy and pokemon red Grin

DrankSangriaInThePark · 03/04/2015 13:46

I find Minecraft worryingly obsessive. Lots of my pupils are hooked on it, very glazed eyes stuff. A lot of parents seem to be buying into the 'but it's educational' thing, but I have a couple of kids at school who are addicted.

DoJo · 03/04/2015 13:46

Anything by Julia Donaldson, although my son isn't bothered by her books either to be honest. I have only read a few of them, but I really don't like her writing style and the way she just crams in words that rhyme reminds me of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers!

MrTumblesBavarianFanbase · 03/04/2015 13:47

I like where the wild things are but it doesn't work for children with siblings does it - it's not just unconditional live but to be loved "most of all" that makes me a bit Hmm ... also DC3 is always concerned about the food being still "hot" because he doesn't like food to be hot (just luke warm Hmm ) and although he can't really read he likes to follow the words and knows hot starts with H and warm with W....

He does like the story and pictures otherwise and especially the phrase Wild Rumpus :o

Frozen left all my kids non plussed - they are exactly the right ages (9, 7 and nearly 4) and I took them to see it at the cinema so the would have been that bit younger then - they usually chatter excitedly about films after seeing them for days, but really had nothing much to say about Frozen, never asked for it on DVD, never really mentioned it again. I don't understand why it's become such a massive deal either, it's just an ok slightly blah Disney film with the usual sentimentality - ok there's a twist, which might be new to Disney princess films ... But every other film has a twist, really don't see why so many kids (and adults) have such a thing about it.

DC3 does really like The Gruffalo though :Smile

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 03/04/2015 13:47

Fatty, I miss my original game boy! I had pokemon stickers all over it. Charizard pride of place on the front. I had Red too, totes better than Blue!

glorymorning · 03/04/2015 13:47

They want to be Elsa because she's blonde and her dress is nicer. That's all.

Get a bit sick of this perception that blonde is the only thing that is "beautiful" and what all girls want being reinforced by women.

She has magical powers, when my niece dresses up as Elsa she always pretending she has ice powers. That's the pull.

fattymcChocolateEgg · 03/04/2015 13:49

I love charizard. also still.have pokemon gold for it and have soul silver and heart gold on nintendo ds.
my DS thinks im awesome Wink

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 03/04/2015 13:56

So glad to hear that! I'm pregnant with my first, really want to share my (and partner's!) love of the game, well games in general. Knowing my chances, I'll have some super sporty, cross country fanatic instead Grin.

As for magic powers, when I was a kid I wanted to be Mystic from the X-Men. Or Poison Ivy from Batman. I think I had issues though, that's why Elsa is too.....well Disney, for my liking.

fattymcChocolateEgg · 03/04/2015 13:58

I always wanted to be a super saiyan! thats another love I have passed on to DS. Dragon ball z Grin

MrsFlannel · 03/04/2015 14:26

glory in your experience that's the pull.

SomewhereIBelong · 03/04/2015 14:36

We went to see Where the Wild Things Are at the cinema after thinking the book was okish.. - and walked out after 20min. The ONLY film I ever walked out of.

MythicalChicken · 03/04/2015 14:37

Yes, minions! So annoying. And loads of my GROWN UP friends post daily minion quotes on their FB pages. I am sure these stupid things haven't said all that stuff.

And Frozen! I have had to watch it every day of the Easter hols Sad.

NobodyLivesHere · 03/04/2015 14:43

DoJo how dare you say anything bad about the red hot chilli peppers!!! AngryAngryGrin
I don't get kids.

winewolfhowls · 03/04/2015 18:59

Peter rabbit. Its just glorifying theft!

Also I didn't get pogs even when i was a kid

glorymorning · 03/04/2015 19:19

glory in your experience that's the pull.

Well I think it's ridiculous to promote beauty as one thing.

The fact you did was disgusting.

OwlinaTree · 03/04/2015 19:23

I really don't like the Charlie and Lola books, they are nails on a blackboard to me!

TheRealMaryMillington · 03/04/2015 19:25

Frozen isn't "cult" - it's the epitome of mainstream commercial. It's fine not to like it though. I don't think the story's that great but the songs are pretty good in the scheme of things and that Michelle woman can belt them out.

Where The Wild Things Are otoh is a classic, inimitable, amazing drawings, subtle and hypnotic writing, somehow captures the essence of every childhood longing and imagining…..

SuperMumTum · 03/04/2015 19:39

Where The Wild Things Are was recommended to us by a CAMHS worker when DD was having a lot of trouble sleeping and in particular having nightmares (she was 2.5 at the time). After a few readings she became frickin terrified of WTWTA and now hates all books with any kind of monster or baddie even if it all turns out fine in the end.

PuppyMonkey · 03/04/2015 19:45

Was thinking just today - how when Thunderbirds was on TV originally and everyone adored it, I always thought it was the most boring programme ever and the episodes dragged on for ages. Not going to watch the new version.

ButtonBoo · 03/04/2015 19:58

I see your WTWTA and raise you Dr Seuss. The Cat in the Hat is God awful. Just. Don't. Get. It. ??

Naty1 · 03/04/2015 21:12

Hate ITNG. All seems the same and they dont talk. Reminds me of teletubbies
Dd (2.5) isnt really into frozen but loves minions.

IUseAnyName · 03/04/2015 21:18

I dont inderstand how any of the thomas the tank engine engines still have a job!.... They never follow the rules and are so rude to everyone! I hate it!
Not read where the wild things are but watched the film and thought ot was massively innapropriate for children, it was so depressing and there was so much jealousy and angst between the monsters!

FixItUpChappie · 03/04/2015 21:23

I hate "The Giving Tree". That guy takes and takes till he chops his lovely tree down and uses her up completely. Unconditional love my ass! Epitomizes everything wrong with the human race is more like it.

IUseAnyName · 03/04/2015 21:25

Dojo I agree with the julia donaldson rhymes. I used to like the books but lost complete respect when reading tyranosaurus drip.... "Alakaday!" Wtf?!.... Sadly my ds loves her books
