To Dye DDs hair purple?

DD1 wants her hair purple. She's asked a lot. DD2 copying wants her hair blue.

They are 5 and 2.

I keep saying no but, well, I'm not sure why I'm saying no. It's not like they are asking for a face full of makeup and a boob job. She isn't being influenced by style or anything, she just really really wants purple hair like a lady she saw on the street.

So WIBU to dye her hair purple for fun?

I say no to piercing. My eldest is 11 and still without earrings. I say no to loitering on street corners, I say no internet access that isn't child friendly, I say no to my 7 year old walking to a friends house even if it is 'only 5 streets away' I say no to lots of things. A bit of vegetable based hairdye that goes nowhere near the scalp is not one of the things I say no too.

All dye is safe 2fat, if it's used properly. But anyone could react to any dye, even dyes that are solely plant based.

Make sure you do a patch test at least 24 hours before colouring and try not to touch the scalp (this is more so you don't get dye on your scalp, which will stain and look a bit daft, than to protect your head from melting from all the "chemicals")

I can vouch fro crazy colour washing out much faster than the bottle says (approx 3-5 washes) but I've no idea how "chemical" it is. I've never reacted to it and nor has very sensitive dd1. We've used Directions as well, this lasts a bit longer but not too much.

I wouldn't use proper dye but I can vouch for hair chalks: they're awesome! DS had a blue and green camouflage pattern the other day and it washed right out. I was surprised that they were so vibrant!

Thanks, I'll have a look at those.

Surely it isn't the purple that is the problem so much as having to bleach all the hair to strip off the natural colour before you start - a long, expensive process (if done professionally, which major colour changes probably should be if unfamiliar with dyeing) involving a lot of very strong chemicals. And then dyeing it back to an original colour when it starts growing out because that part is all bleached and faded purple now...

I would never bleach their hair. Can you not go purple without?

I think stage 1 is those hair chalks!

Ffs she is 5. Using chemicals on her hair and scalp for what .... Having purple hair... Nice. Use coloured sprays, chalks, wigs. . Think to the future when she is 13 and wants purple hair - what will you do then?

Probably say yes during the holidays

Got to be better than the orange scalped henna perm with gull wings I sported at 13 Grin

13 is not 2 and 5 though..

At 13/14 i would use directions pots (without pre lightening). Assuming the school won't go mental :)
