To Dye DDs hair purple?

shinynewnamechange · 01/04/2015 23:57

DD1 wants her hair purple. She's asked a lot. DD2 copying wants her hair blue.

They are 5 and 2.

I keep saying no but, well, I'm not sure why I'm saying no. It's not like they are asking for a face full of makeup and a boob job. She isn't being influenced by style or anything, she just really really wants purple hair like a lady she saw on the street.

So WIBU to dye her hair purple for fun?

Pissed see my instincts said "no" but t then I wondered why I was saying no. Like cheerful said it's mucking about not thinking about actual looks iyswim. I don't even really wear makeup every day.

So give me a reason why not because I'm struggling to justify it to myself.

I really really want to have a go on one!

I feel slightly bad reading this as I have blue/purple (blurple?) hair right now and can't go out without hearing a chorus of children exclaiming 'THAT LADY HAS BLUE HAIR' before being hushed by their parents. I've heard the odd 'Can I have that too?' in passing and so apologise if I was the anonymous lady in the street. Wink

I redyed my hair last night actually and jokingly asked my 6yo if he'd like me to do his. He backed away in horror. Tbh though, it's the first time that it had occurred to me that I could dye my childrens' hair but they aren't keen, alas, even though it's the start of the holidays and I use Directions, which is a gentle non permanent dye so it would be gone before they go back (I bleach my hair first so it lasts like a permanent dye on me, but in unbleached hair, it'll just wash out).

NobodyLivesHere · 02/04/2015 10:54

They are wash out colours that I use on myself all the time. There is nothing harmful in them. When I did DDs, I did the bottom few inches so in theory I could have cut it off if it had gone 'wrong' but it didn't, and there is no reason it would on virgin hair. It's hairdye not a lip ring. Hmm people pierce the ears of children far younger than my dd.

SistersOfPercy · 02/04/2015 10:55

I've done it, but my hair had been all colours at the time so it wasn't an unusual request from DD.
I used spray or artists pastels (I was an art student at the time so had an abundance of those!), hair chalk is essentially pastel anyway at five times the price.

It's a bit of fun at the end of the day and I don't see any harm in it.

ditavonteesed · 02/04/2015 10:58

my dd's have theirs done every summer, last year one was pink and one was blue, with dye that washes out over a few weeks. They love it and no harm to anyone (unless you count my bathrroom). They are 9 and 11 been doing it for about 3 or 4 years.

AbiAbi · 02/04/2015 10:59

I dip dye the ends of my DDs hair every summer. Pink in 2013, light blue last year. It gets chopped off on Sept 1st. It's hair, who cares.

TheWhiteRoad · 02/04/2015 11:01

My 5 year old wants pink hair. I've got her some hair chalk for Easter.

MustBeLoopy390 · 02/04/2015 11:05

Maybe use hair chalks, or coloured spray. It's important to remember that any hair dye, temp or permanent, home or professional can and does cause damage to hair, and any type of hair damage (heat, colour etc) is very hard to undo once it is done. (I trained as a hairdresser, my SIL is a hairdresser)

Sirzy · 02/04/2015 11:07

I wouldn't be keen on putting the amount of chemicals in normal hair dyes on a child. Use wigs or extensions.

DS (5) saw me having my hair highlighted yesterday and said "I'm going to paint dans hair when we go back to school" - took a bit of explaining as to why he really can't do that and I think I will mention it to school so they can watch him closely when he goes near paint!

Gottagetmoving · 02/04/2015 11:09

Hair chalks are fine, or anything else that is recommend for child's play.
I don't 'get' anyone considering dying a small child's hair? Apart from anything else, if there are chemicals in it, they could cause skin problems.

ladyrosy · 02/04/2015 11:12

My mum used to bleach my hair using sun-in spray when I was a kid, up to when I was about 6 or 7 years old. Her idea, not mine. She liked having a kid with platinum blonde hair.

It may or may not be related that I am allergic to some common ingredients in beauty products, particularly paraben preservatives. They feature in shampoo, conditioner, make up, moisturiser, mouthwash, hair dye, even "gentle" or "hypoallergenic" ranges such as Simple, Lush and Clinique.

I am not saying that the two are related, but I don't think it is a great idea to expose a child to unnecessary chemicals. You have no idea what impact it could have, even if the chemicals are considered safe for general population use.

If you do decide to dye their hair, please think about doing the dip-dye effect, as then there won't be dye contact with the scalp.

sosix · 02/04/2015 11:13

No I would'nt, chemicals etc. also shes 5!!!! Will she be getting her hair bleached at 12 if she wants to go blond? Hmm

NobodyLivesHere · 02/04/2015 11:17

I can only speak personally, but the dye wasn't on DDs skin. It was on the ends of her hair which was below her shoulders.

pissedglitter · 02/04/2015 11:25

If you really need a reason not to dye a 5 year olds hair then fuck me I'm lost for words

  1. allergic reactions
  2. why am I even listing reasons SHE IS 5!!
bloodyteenagers · 02/04/2015 11:32

Hair chalk. Bought mine from Amazon. Really easy to use, and the lighter the hair the better the results.
Washes out easily.

If you want to dye it, I would and have dipped dyed the ends using natural hair dye as these don't have the chemicals that are in regular dyes.

glittertits · 02/04/2015 11:34

Hair chalk or spray in dye :)

TailorMouse · 02/04/2015 11:38

On a slightly more unusual theme - I have heard of dog grooming salons using beetroot juice to dye their fur. Maybe a little longer lasting than hair chalks but no chemicals and should wash out fairly easily.
Would imagine you can make a paste if you mix it with some conditioner or similar then have your dd sit for a bit with it?

kali110 · 02/04/2015 11:43

I don't know why i wouldnt, probably becausr of the stares!
The ones that wash out after a few washes can stay in a lot linger on certain hair depending on how light the hair is. I had a green on that lasted months instead of 10 washes!

Your mum put Sun In on your hair ladyrosy?! Shock

That's basically diluted peroxide :(

Floggingmolly · 02/04/2015 11:49

Your two year old screamed at the face paint until you wiped it off and now you want to dye her hair blue? Do you actually seek out ways to make your life difficult?

EstRusMum · 02/04/2015 11:51

Sprays, hair chalk, temporary dye. Make them prettyEaster Wink

I'd definitely go with the chalks and sprays as they are so little at the minute. Both my DD and DS have an interest in dying their hair and have done for years but i might be the reason behind that as I have blue hair.

I'll admit though over the xmas hols I dip dyed my DD's (she was 8 then) purple with Directions hair colour, it's not permanent but it takes ages to wash out. However it wasn't a problem as she wanted to chop her hair off and donate it (her swimming instructor had done this). So before she went back to school she had about 14 inch taken off. The school never knew and her hairs perfectly fine :)

My DS this summer is getting a Mohawk, he's been after one for years.

If you do decide to use dye though, make sure you do a patch test.

D0oinMeCleanin · 02/04/2015 12:16

Dd1 dyes her hair over most holidays. She has blonde hair, so the shades show up well.

We use Crazy Colour dye, which washes out very quickly for the most part, but there are usually still some hints of colour left after the holidays, you'd only see them if you knew she'd dyed her hair, they are very faded after the first three washes. She dip dyes it for the main part, she did her whole head cerise pink last year but she didn't like it. People kept looking at her, she said, so we bought some colour stripping shampoo and washed it out.

DD1 is 11 though, she was about 8 or 9 when she was first allowed. I don't think I'd have let her at 5 and definitely not at 2, but really it's upto you.

Dd2 gets a few streaks when dd1 gets hers done, she is 8 but her hair is much darker and I use much less dye, so it doesn't really show up very well.

It doesn't seem to damage their hair, but we use a very intensive conditioner for a good few weeks after that we buy from a salon supply shop and they get a good trim once it's washed out.

It's not going to kill them at the end of the day, it's just a bit of fun. I'd go for streaks or a dip dye at the very tips rather than a full head though and use a lightish purple. Crazy Colour do a nice lilac colour.
