What you think a vegetable is?

OP posts:
sosix · 31/03/2015 00:04

Its a clitirious (sp) Grin

Stratter5 · 31/03/2015 00:09

It's a what?

I am putting my foot down, and creating an absolute definition. If you have it with/for your main course, it's a vegetable; if you have it for pudding, it's a fruit. Any other time, it's a snack.

Some are able to migrate between definitions, but the constant is when you are actually eating it.

Speaks up for bacteria and viruses. They kick serious ass.

Will no one speak for the protozoa? Sneaky bastards. You can't even get a bloody decent vaccine to work against them.

Oh, and the fish. We are all fish. As all birds are also dinosaurs.

Lweji · 31/03/2015 00:16

Also, I love tomato jam. So, it's both a fruit and a vegetable. And a berry.

LineRunner · 31/03/2015 07:19

So, tomatoes are omnifood?

Carrot cake? Lemons in salad dressings AND lemon tart? Duck a la orange?

nochocolateforlentteacake · 31/03/2015 08:09

Tomatoes are, in fact, food of the gods. I loves 'em.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 31/03/2015 08:13

I thought a tomato was a culinary vegetable but technically a fruit....

ThisFenceIsComfy · 31/03/2015 08:14

Because botanically the tomato is a fruit of a flowering plant.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 31/03/2015 08:15

Either way my toddler thinks they are "sgusting"

OrlandoWoolf · 31/03/2015 08:17

Ultimately - they are just all DNA carriers.

AlternativeTentacles · 31/03/2015 08:18

A tomato from a supermarket is a completely different beast to a home grown tomato. Tomatoes for the mass market are grown hydroponically, with no soil and all the nutrients are pumped into the water. Which is why they taste watery. Also the varieties are not selected for taste but for ability to ripen on the same day.

A home grown heritage tomato, grown in proper soil, is a truly heavenly taste. My nieces pick them like sweets when they are at mine.

Bromeliads sound like they should grant wishes in children's stories.

CeliaLytton · 31/03/2015 08:29

Indeed it is not the object itself, but the role the object plays in our lives. Deeeeeep.

Bakeoffcake · 31/03/2015 08:32

All I know is that tomatoes should NOT be kept in the fridge.

Leave them out in the fruit bowl and they taste ten times better.

EBearhug · 31/03/2015 08:35

I do a pot roast of chicken with rhubarb, actually using it as a vegetable.

I like to live life on the edge.

BMW6 · 31/03/2015 10:35

Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote about eating tomatoes with sugar and cream.

So there.

Stratter5 · 31/03/2015 10:53

Carrot cake? Lemons in salad dressings AND lemon tart? Duck a la orange

Flavourings

Exactly.
