What you think a vegetable is?

LineRunner · 30/03/2015 17:55

I weaned my DCs onto bananas. I'm still trying to make it up to them.

FuzzyWizard · 30/03/2015 18:00

You seem to be assuming everyone else is a bit thick. I understand quite well that fruit has a scientific definition but vegetables don't. The definition of vegetable is cultural and it is all the other plant stuff we eat that isn't fruit or nuts. It's basically a catch all term "other stuff". I still think it's ok to call tomato, aubergine pepper etc veg and I do all the time. People aren't wrong to say it's actually a fruit though.

OrlandoWoolf · 30/03/2015 18:04

ethelb

You seem to be taking this very seriously.

Throws in herbs and bananas to the mix Grin

ethelb · 30/03/2015 18:08

Fuzzy Arguing that a tomato isn't a vegetable because it is a fruit is wrong though.

Orlando, herbs, don't even get me started on herbs. Or weeds!Grin

a vegetable does not have seeds INSIDE it

A vegetable is a plant you can eat.
A tomato, peppers, and runner bean - all fruits.

Baked beans ie beans and tomatoes - are a fruit salad.

Strawberries are not fruits, but each pip on the surface is a fruit in itself.

Peanuts are peas not nuts.

OrlandoWoolf · 30/03/2015 18:10

A weed is a plant in the wrong place. I thought everyone knew that Grin

DoctorLawn · 30/03/2015 18:10

I'm reasonably sure rhubarb is a vegetable, which always makes me Hmm

OrlandoWoolf · 30/03/2015 18:10

Peanuts are peas not nuts

What?

ethelb · 30/03/2015 18:13

Nuts are fruit. Many nuts that are considered nuts are not botanically nuts. Brazil nuts for example.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/03/2015 18:13

Rhubarb is just bloody confusing - what sort of vegetable is it that you eat for pudding and grow in the dark.

Harumph!

OrlandoWoolf · 30/03/2015 18:15

I never liked studying plants. I found them really boring. You know where you are with animals.

LineRunner · 30/03/2015 18:16

I went to a lecture once on Einkorn.

Rock and roll lifestyle.

nochocolateforlentteacake · 30/03/2015 18:16

I love tomatoes. Not okra though. Nasty, slimy stuff.

AlternativeTentacles · 30/03/2015 18:20

I'm reasonably sure rhubarb is a vegetable

Correct.

I study plants and teach horticulture and never find plants boring. They kick the butt of animals with all their permutations and their ability to use creatures to do their bidding.

Hassled · 30/03/2015 18:42

"plants kick the butt of animals :o"

I much prefer vegetables to fruit. Even though fruit are, apparently, also vegetables. Give me a parsnip over a pear any day.

OrlandoWoolf · 30/03/2015 18:45

Speaks up for bacteria and viruses. They kick serious ass.

KingJoffreyFanciesDarylDixon · 30/03/2015 18:47

BTW I once heard a very Hyacynth Bucket type call them leg-oo-may, sort of rhyming with crudité.

Is 'crudité' not pronounced 'crud-dite', then?

Doesn't rhyme with legoooms...

LineRunner · 30/03/2015 18:47

Will somebody please think of the phagocytes?

AlternativeTentacles · 30/03/2015 18:48

Speaks up for bacteria and viruses.

Bacteria and viruses can cripple any animal. They rule!

OrlandoWoolf · 30/03/2015 18:51

Bacteria and viruses can cripple any animal. They rule

And Martians. Remember War of the Worlds.

DoJo · 30/03/2015 19:03

Why do people argue that a tomato is a fruit, but rarely say an aubergine?

Why do people not get snarky about chillies being fruits, not vegetables?

Why do people think it is a point of argument at all?

I'm not sure they do, do they? Who are these people that you are discussing this with?

LineRunner · 30/03/2015 19:07

People down the pub I expect. We had a running row about alleles.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 30/03/2015 19:13

KingJ crudite is pronounced crude-ee-tay, the lady I mentioned was calling legumes something in between lay-goo-may and leg-goo-may

EveBoswell · 30/03/2015 19:20

There are two sorts of fruit. One is a drupe and it has one seed inside it eg plum, cherry, almond, olive. One is an achene and it has more than one seed eg apple, pear, tomato, cucumber.

Where strawberries are concerned, the red, fleshy part is a vegetable and the seeds are achenes.

OrlandoWoolf · 30/03/2015 19:23

Some people on here are very well informed about fruits and vegetables. They should go on Pointless. Name a fruit. Or a vegetable.

Maybe it could be a game.

Fruit, vegetable or something else.
