the Miele washing machines are very popular there, great reviews.....so I google them, jesus christ they are like over £1000!!!

I have a Hoover washing machine and it's been repaired 8 times in 2.5 years. It's so noisy you can't hold a conversation when it's on and the engineer tried to tell me that was normal. Extended warranty was certainly not a waste of money in my case!

BabyGanoush · 31/03/2015 07:09

I dream of a Miele washer. My mum is on her second washing machine in her life ever, both Miele, they just seem to last.

I had an AEG which fell off a truck (literally), I got it half price as it had a bit of a dent. They said I could not use warranty.

The bastard kept burning little black holes in my clothes on the dryer cycle.

What a fool, I guess I could have set the house on fire!

I called the company I bought it from and they replaced it. Smile

Has been going strong for 8 years.

But I dream of a Miele (how sad is that!)

Artandco · 31/03/2015 07:18

Almost everything Miele comes with a 10 year guarantee. Even our Miele Hoover has it ( and was cheaper than dyson ones)

Our tumble dryer dries a whole load in 30-40 mins. Our old zanussi one took about a day

Yabu...if people take time to review their stuff, that's up to them. I work about 50 hours a week as does dh, can we not review the stuff we pay for because some people can't afford it? Dhs cousin couldn't afford a travel cot, I gave her mine as I don't need it anymore and it got used once for 2 hours as ds wouldn't sleep in it. So should she complain about anyone reviewing travel cots?

I laugh at the excuse that people who bother doing reviews only do so as they don't have jobs.

Why not complain that people shopping with a lower budget don't do reviews and that's unfair.

Fwiw I have a hot point washing machine and no dishwasher. Grin

Unappreciatedandfat · 31/03/2015 07:59

My beko is grand - I think I paid £199 for it at a reduced price. Had it for three years and it gets a hammering as we live on a farm so it deals with copious amounts of shit, baler band, small implements/tools etc.

Latara · 31/03/2015 08:04

I have a Siemens washing machine that is my mum's old washing machine (she moved to a warden-assisted flat so gave away her washing machine).

And I have a Bosch fridge freezer that was originally my nan's - it must be at least 15 years old now and still going strong.

My dryer is a Hoover and was also originally my nan's - also about 15 yrs old. It's also very good.

My vacuum cleaner is a Miele Pet Hair one that I bought new - I had to because my cat is long-haired and sheds fur everywhere.

Roussette · 31/03/2015 08:15

Could I ask... anyone who has used ao.com could you tell me about the plumbing in service. Do they 'unplumb' the old machine and plumb in the new one? I know you have to pay for this but I just wondered how much they do. (we are incapable of anything involving water without flooding the house, my DH stays away from DIY). In an ideal world I want them to pull out the old machine, undo the taps or whatever is involved, take it away and put in the new one.

My very old Bosch w/m is giving up the ghost slowly. However, it has been going at least 20 years (might be longer).

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 31/03/2015 08:25

I don't review stuff because I can't be arsed. I buy some cheap stuff and some expensive stuff.

Some cheap stuff is complete rubbish and some is absolutely fine. Sometimes it's worth it to pay extra, sometimes you're just paying more for a name/perceived reputation. It's quite hard to tell a lot of the time.

I don't dream of a Miele washing machine, but I've done perfectly well with cheaper ones. I've had 2 in 20 years of buying my own washing machines. Both cheapish - the first still worked when we left it in our first house - it was 11 years old and I wanted a bigger drum and a hand wash programme. The second is 9 years old and still fine. I look for the cheapest one with the features I need and a brand that I perceive as decent.

And a lot of it is about perception, sometimes without any actual substance. Plenty of people on here have said they are happy with Beko appliances. I discounted those because I 'thought' they were rubbish because I hadn't really heard of them. But in reality, I don't know anything about Beko - I think they are Curry's own brand? If that is the case, it is likely they are made by a big brand and are in reality totally fine - who knows?

For a Miele to be worth it to me, it would have to last 3/4 times longer than my current washing machines - so 30/40 years, which may happen. Or it would have to be significantly better than the cheaper ones.

One thing I have noticed with my 'new' appliances (washing machine and dishwasher is that the cycle is much longer than the ones they replaced).

I nearly always use the 40C cotton cycle which took one hour 10 mins on my first washer but over twice as long on the second one. Same for the dishwasher - the first Hotpoint took 90 minutes, the new Bosch takes over 2.5 hours for a hot wash. Are the Miele equivalents quicker? Someone upthread says their Miele tumble drier is very quick.

Stealthsquiggle · 31/03/2015 08:31

I am sure there are good budget brands (Beko seems to get good comments generally, and we have a Beko freezer that was old when we inherited it with the house and is still going strong 9 years later), but Hotpoint and Hoover are not them. Complete waste of a not insignificant amount of money and their so called service organisation is set up purely to rip you off sell you an extended warranty package that you don't want.

As for the OP - I think you find the same on any review site, TBH. I will tend to rank things by review, start at the top, and work down until I can afford something.

..that said, we do have a Miele dishwasher. We worked out that if it managed to live a year beyond it's guarantee then it would be better value than cheaper ones, at the rate that we were killing them. I do love how quiet it is less so how bloody long it takes and the fact that it has no "time remaining" display

Stillwishihadabs · 31/03/2015 08:35

I have an LG it is fantastic (5 years young so far) It replaced a 9 year old zanussi whirlpool.

bruffin · 31/03/2015 08:37

I just bought a Samsung washing machine from AO Roussette and have bought things from them before and they are excellent. Keep you up to date with delivery times etc, ring up to make sure about access.
We didn't have it plumbed but paid for old one to be taken away, and had to have that disconnected.
SSD I love my new my new Samsung very good value at £369 and sings a pretty tune when its finished Grin

TarkaTheOtter · 31/03/2015 08:42

I hate my Hoover washing machine. We bought one in our last house and now are renting and the landlord has bought pretty much the same bloody one.
We had a Beko before all that and I really liked it and think it was pretty reasonably priced.

Roussette · 31/03/2015 08:44

Thanks bruffin I might go for it, that's really useful, because if they disconnected and took your old one away, it looks like they can sort out our plumbing fear !

Looking at your Samsung, great reviews it has. Smile

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 31/03/2015 09:05

My Hotpoint fridge freezer is about 16 years old and still going strong, and my Hotpoint dishwasher lasted about 13 years of daily use (never rinsed anything either) before total failure. I never buy extended warranties for anything as they are completely unnecessary and a total ripoff.

Stealthsquiggle · 31/03/2015 09:13

Ilkley I think hotpoint are trading off the generation of machines you have to sell their, frankly, crap modern successors.

bruffin · 31/03/2015 09:16

sorry Roussette meant we had to disconnect it!

HellKitty · 31/03/2015 09:19

Well my Bosch washer is pissing water all over the floor.

Currently in shock over the DVD player DP wants. Not a Sony but an Oppo. Never heard of them but they're over £500.

Roussette · 31/03/2015 09:22

Ahhh.... back to square one I'm sure it isn't that tricky but we have history on this!

Totality22 · 31/03/2015 09:26

Just had to check what mine is I've only used it at least every other day for the past two years

It's a Zanussi.

I think this is our 3rd machine in 7.5 years though. Have had a Beko and can't remember what the other one was. All in the region of £200 - £300.

We also go through kettles like mad. Have had maybe one a year!!!!

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 31/03/2015 09:37

There are plenty of people on lower incomes posting regularly on MN. The reviews section relies on MNers posting reviews, so to say that only the middle class or moneyed come here or "have time" to review products is clearly nonsense. Look at the talk boards, filled with chat from people from all walks of life. If they are choosing to spend that time chatting about other things rather than reviewing their electricals fine but let's not blame MNHQ or the demon middle classes for that.

tabulahrasa · 31/03/2015 09:38

I'm not rich or middle class, I bought a Miele washing machine because the repairman for the previous washing machine reccomended them and when I compared the price of a cheap one with an extended warranty actually a Miele wasn't much more.

It's lasted 11 years so far with no problems whatsoever, the 8 years before that is gone through three washing machines and had to have people out to fix them.

So while yes it was a bigger hit to start with, it's way way cheaper than 3 washing machines and extended warranties.

HellKitty · 31/03/2015 09:42

We were going through kettles like crazy too until we bought a Dualit one. My old Dualit toaster is still going strong after 10+ years.

HellKitty · 31/03/2015 09:47

DP is very working class but has to buy the best he can afford. He hates it if I go to Primark for 6 bags of shite for a fiver when I could use the cash to buy something quality. We do have the funds now though so are lucky in that respect.
