HV has told me that my 20 month old DD is overweight. I'm at a loss

I've always put in every effort to make sure she eats healthily, she loves fruit and veg and I make every meal from scratch, no junk etc. She has small portions and they fill her up easily. She has the very occasional treat and only drinks milk or water.

We live on a farm so she's a very active toddler (she's been walking since 11 months) and just generally loves being outside. I'm so disheartened because I really thought that I was setting her up for being fit and healthy. I've recently lost 3-4 stones in weight jus through doing more exercise.
I see my friends with their toddlers who are a similar age and the right weight and they're fed chips, crisps, chocolate and given fizzy drinks and are sat inside all day long watching TV. What the hell have I done so wrong?

I'd get the GP to weigh her again, the HV might not have got it right. That does sound v heavy for her age and diet.

Unappreciatedandfat · 30/03/2015 12:26

I don't buy chocolate or crisps in the house and she only has a tommee tippee beaker full of milk per day, she must've been weighed incorrectly but I justbthink if that was so they would've re weighed her.

She's always on the go as no difficulty running etc. she beginning to sit and concentrate for a little while longer etc, think I'm going to book an appointment with my GP, the HV was really off hand with me

Have you weighed her yourself? My 5 year old weighs 17kg so that doesn't sound right does it?

Unappreciatedandfat · 30/03/2015 12:28

pokerface "some of the biggest fatties we know are farmers" oh thanks!! Well speak for yourself but my partner is a perfect weight for his height and I'm just trying to shift the last few pounds SUCCESSFULLY!

She has toddler sized portions ona toddler plate!

OP posts:
reni1 · 30/03/2015 12:29

This is heavy. Look up portion sizes, they should be really small. You said omelette, that should be from 1/2 egg; 1/2 slize of toast or 3-4 tablespoons for cereals for breakfast. 1/2 banana, 1 fishfinger, 2-5 tablespoons cooked pasta, half a mug of soup... I think this is easy to get wrong, these portions look tiny on a plate.

Unappreciatedandfat · 30/03/2015 12:31

I will weigh her when she wakes up, my scales are pretty accurate, never wanted to weigh her at home but if it's possible that they've made a mistake then I will

slithytove · 30/03/2015 12:31

Do you want to post a picture of her with her face obscured and we can say if she looks overweight?

Ineedacleaningfairy · 30/03/2015 12:32

How did the HV weigh her? Maybe the scales were wrong?

I was going to post to say my toddler is also classed as overweight and I have been advised to just continue with the diet/excersise he currently has, he was on the 50th centile for both weight and height at 18 months, at 2 his weight centile was quite a bit heigher than his height centile and his bmi centile was very high, he's now 2.5 and I haven't had him officially weighed for a while but he hasn't gained much weight (according to my home scales) but he's grown out of lots of clothes so I think he's got taller and hopefully his height/weight centiles are starting to converge again!

My son really did look chubby around the age of 2, chubby legs like babies have and chubby cheeks and a little pot belly, at 2 years old he was 88cm and weighed 14.3 kg. I would think that if your toddler doesn't look chubby then the scales must be wrong, as my dc was 6cm taller, 2kg lighter and very obviously chubby!

sliceofsoup · 30/03/2015 12:32

Jesus pokerface that post was incredibly offensive. Please don't call people "fatties".

My 7.5 yr old is only 19kg and he is around 125cm. When he was a baby though he was a little chunk! Always weighed more than he looked. I would double check her weight. That sound quite heavy for her height. Sounds like they've made a mistake. If she won't stay still on scales weigh yourselves then hold DD and weigh again. Well done for losing weight yourself too.

DisappointedOne · 30/03/2015 12:35

My friend's baby was 28lbs at 9 months - she was huge (but lovely). At 4.5 she's very tall but still overweight according to the school nurse, despite not really looking it.

I'd definitely recheck that weight though.

TurnOverTheTv · 30/03/2015 12:36

I would definitely re-weigh to double check. Her diet sounds great. As a comparison my 3 year old is 10kg so is does sound a bit on the heavy side which doesn't seem to match up with her diet at all.

slithytove · 30/03/2015 12:36

This sounds like a mistake definitely. DS is 87cm, 13.2 kg and is overweight :(

At those stats your dd would be so overweight I cant imagine you wouldn't know.

CalleighDoodle · 30/03/2015 12:37

I agree with the others. That is very over weight to the height but the first thing to do is uave her remeasured and weighed again. My son was apparently off the chart for height at 18months and they were monitoring. My husband is 6 feet4. Im 5feet 8. Anyway i wasnt convinced and when done again at 2 he was 91st centile for height and weight.

Unappreciatedandfat · 30/03/2015 12:37

Not exactly the best I'll see if I can find another one

dixiechick1975 · 30/03/2015 12:38

Agree weigh her and measure her yourself, then you know for definite. Don't assume accurate - my friend's DD shrank according to hv when they were supposed to be taking regular measurements due to a medical condition. They have tried to weigh my DD several times with shoes or her heavy prosthetic arm on.

Then i'd keep a food diary and book in to see GP and take it with you.

They may refer to a dietician. That said another friend was referred and was already doing what they recommended.

slithytove · 30/03/2015 12:42

What size clothes is she in?

She does look bigger than the toddlers I know, ranging from 13-25 months. That could just be because she is in slightly tight clothes or is still a baby and hasn't started becoming a little girl yet.

It's hard to tell from that pic.

KeturahLee · 30/03/2015 12:42

In that picture she looks like a younger child than 20 months to me, more like a baby than a toddler, so I can imagine she is a bit overweight. Agree she doesn't look massively overweight there though.

AmberLav · 30/03/2015 12:43

My DS barely gained any weight between 2 and 3, but he stretched out a lot - just before his 2nd birthday, he was just under 91st percentile. At just before 4 he is just over the 50th percentile (16.98kg), and taller than most of his peers. I take the nice smooth percentile graph with a large pinch of salt (metaphorically, as of course I do not use any salt in cooking!) as children do not grow on a smooth curve.

That said, I would double check the weight, as the scales at the HV can be off, I've seen some ludicrous results weeks apart on different clinic scales... If they are correct, then it is probably portion sizes, or a build up to a growth spurt.

Unappreciatedandfat · 30/03/2015 12:45

She's in 18-24 month clothes and that was taken 3 days ago

hideandseekpig · 30/03/2015 12:48

I don't think she looks particularly overweight, a bit of toddler chubbiness but doesn't look extreme. I'd check her weight again and then maybe go and see your GP for your own peace of mind.

TurnOverTheTv · 30/03/2015 12:48

I wouldn't say she looks hugely overweight, just a bit of a chunky baby. Definitely re-weigh.

KeturahLee · 30/03/2015 12:48

It's hard to believe she weighs almost 16kg OP, definitely weigh her again. She looks similar in build to my 12 month old DS, who is 78cm and 11kg and definitely looks like a round chubby baby, lots of dimples and rolls of fat on his thighs.
