My friend said she'd never ask a friend/neighbour/colleague to do work on her home incase something went wrong and it got awkward.

I'm employed by him and his wife to look after their kids one day a week.

Home improvements is his businesse.

Don't do it. I've been stung numerous times and lost friendships over it. Do not ever mix business and pleasure.

I don't see the harm in asking. I'm assuming you have seen examples of his work and are happy with it?

It's not like you're going into business with him! Smile

Wouldn't be mixing business with pleasure though would it, the man is the OPs employer not friend. I don't see the harm in it.

how does he deal with his customers? Do most seem to be pleased with the standard of work, and his approach to the job?

If yes to above, I'd ask him to quote. Who knows? He might even give you a discount!

But, be sure you do everything formally and by-the-book as you would with any builder. Make sure all agreements are in writing, etc.
