Hello all. I have 2 DC. DD is 2 years 3 months old and DS is 6 months old. DD has always been a great sleeper, always 12 hours at night and more if on growth spurt or ill. Until the last month she also slept for approx 2 hours in the afternoon. Although she seems tired and rubs her eyes she is no longer taking her afternoon nap now. If I put her down in her cot she is happy to sing, play and talk to herself but does not sleep. She gets plenty of exercise and stimulation so I assumed that she is just now no longer needing this as it is does not matter what time I put her down she does not sleep. However some friends (who are also parents) have said I should continue to try to put her down as she is too young to stop daytime napping and others have said I am lucky she napped for so long.

Could you please tell me when your toddler ceased daytime naps so I have a better view of what is expected? Many thanks.

2yr 2mo twins. DTS is pretty much ready to drop his nap. Has 20 mins max and often nothing. DTD still needs one but gets distracted by DTS. I can just about get her upatairs on her own but sometimes no dice.

If she's happy to 'rest' - playing with a quiet toy or reading books, then I'd keep putting her in her cot. As long as she's not upset then I don't see the harm and you get a few precious minutes of peace!

At 2 DD stopped taking them at weekends and holidays when with us, and 2 and 4 months, we gradually stopped them as she didn't want to sleep at night, so they were cut to 2 a week at childminder and then down to 1 and then none.

Turquoisetortoise · 29/03/2015 17:20

DD stopped having a nap every day from around 18m and carried on having a few naps a week for another few months before she stopped completely. DS is now 2.5 and still having a nap maybe 3 days a week. Either he doesn't have one and is almost falling asleep in his dinner, or has one and won't go to bed at night until a ridiculous time. I don't know which is better/worse!

Turquoisetortoise · 29/03/2015 17:23

I forgot to say, several friends have children aged 3+ who still have long afternoon naps.

Artandco · 29/03/2015 17:25

Both mine still nap at 4 years. But we always have had later bedtime. They sleep 11hrs at night, 2 in the day

HighwayDragon · 29/03/2015 17:25

Dd is 5.2 and still naps

ApocalypseNowt · 29/03/2015 17:25

DD1 (3.3yo) still has an afternoon nap. She would sleep for more than 2 hours if I let her and she still clocks up a good 11-12 hours at night. Doesn't wake up if a bomb goes off She is an angel when it comes to sleep and always has been takes after me.

DD2 is 1.3yo. She sometimes still has 2 naps but often one (or one and a micronap). I fully expect her to have dropped all naps before her older sister. She occasionally sleeps through but wakes up if a moth farts she takes after dh.

There's so much difference between different children. You and they know what they need. Smile and nod at the parenting experts your friends and then do your own thing.

Fugghetaboutit · 29/03/2015 17:26

Around 20 months

Aeroflotgirl · 29/03/2015 17:28

Oh good, I am not alone, ds 3.2 years still has an afternoon nap, he gets so tired and ratty otherwise.

BigfootFilesHisToesInYourTea · 29/03/2015 17:32

18 months. Both of 'em.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 29/03/2015 17:35

DD stopped at 2.6 which was a PITA as I was heavily pg. She would have one on a Saturday after swimming. Now, at 3.3 I cannot remember the last time she napped. Certainly not since last year. She does sleep 13hrs at night though which is lovely.

zirca · 29/03/2015 17:38

When the new baby turned up! 25 months old.

Musicaltheatremum · 29/03/2015 17:38

DD stopped the day I brought her brother home from hospital 2yrs 5minhs but she still went up for a "rest" in her cot for months afterwards and used to sing and play there with no problem. Gave me some time with my son who cried all the time.

mamapants · 29/03/2015 17:43

My Ds went through a patch where he had a day or two without naps, at the age of 2 years 5 month. This lasted maybe three weeks. Then he carried on napping everyday. He's now 2 years 9 months.

Mrsjayy · 29/03/2015 17:47

Dd1 was just over a year was a nightmare dd2 was still occasionally napping at 4

BullshitS70 · 29/03/2015 17:49

Mine napped in the day until they started school and they couldn't any more - so DD1 was 4.5 and DS1 was the same.

Obv I am very lucky, but we did put a lot of importance on getting a nice rest in the day, as it made them so completely cranky if we didn't let them sleep

slightlyconfused85 · 29/03/2015 17:49

She stopped every day at 2 and completely by 2.2. She is fine as long as bedtime not later than 6.45. I was surprised as she was a very sleepy baby and young toddler but remains a fairly solid night sleeper

DuelingFanjo · 29/03/2015 17:50

Around 18 months.

Discopanda · 29/03/2015 17:51

18 months! And by then it was literally cutting out a single 20 minute (if I was lucky) nap.

Providore · 29/03/2015 17:57

My DS has been a terrible sleeper from day one. Stopped him napping at about 26 months to see if it improved night sleep. It did mean he was easier to put to bed but he's still pretty much allergic to sleep. He's 3.6 and has never slept through. A typical night he'll wake anywhere from 4-12 times. Dropping his nap didn't really change this, but I did realise he didn't 'need' a nap, an in fact have reluctantly come to accept that he just doesn't need as much sleep as me.

caeleth84 · 29/03/2015 18:00

Ds1 is 3 in June and still naps most days. He tries to refuse his naps some days if we're home, but it completely messes up his routine (starts waking at 6am because he has to be put to bed so early) so we try really hard to get him down. If we're out he easily falls asleep in the pram so he definitely still needs the nap, just has learned to fight it

littlejohnnydory · 29/03/2015 18:01

Varies such a lot. Ds was over 3. Both dd's were under two.

Grantaire · 29/03/2015 18:03

Depends on the child.

DD was 12 months old and was awake from 8am until 10pm, happy as larry.

DS was nearly 3.

ahbollocks · 29/03/2015 18:05

18 months

NoraRobertsismyguiltypleasure · 29/03/2015 18:07

My dd is 2.5yrs, she was never great at napping, but would have nearly an hour most days. Now she only sleeps if we're in the car at certain times of day. She sleeps 11 or 12 hours at night whether she has slept or not, but does need to go to bed 30mins or so earlier on non nap days.
