Hello all. I have 2 DC. DD is 2 years 3 months old and DS is 6 months old. DD has always been a great sleeper, always 12 hours at night and more if on growth spurt or ill. Until the last month she also slept for approx 2 hours in the afternoon. Although she seems tired and rubs her eyes she is no longer taking her afternoon nap now. If I put her down in her cot she is happy to sing, play and talk to herself but does not sleep. She gets plenty of exercise and stimulation so I assumed that she is just now no longer needing this as it is does not matter what time I put her down she does not sleep. However some friends (who are also parents) have said I should continue to try to put her down as she is too young to stop daytime napping and others have said I am lucky she napped for so long.

Could you please tell me when your toddler ceased daytime naps so I have a better view of what is expected? Many thanks.

I had DD stop taking her afternoon nap at around 18 months. She is still tired enough to have a nap almost every day, but if she has a nap then she has a hard time falling asleep at night. If she doesn't have a nap it takes her about 10 minutes to fall asleep at 7pm. If she does have a nap it takes her over an hour to fall asleep and she doesn't fall asleep until about 8-8:30pm. So I decided to stop her afternoon naps and make her night time sleep better.

DS stopped having naps routinely at 22 months and two months before that I stopped worrying about putting down if we weren't at home. He dropped the nap shortly after starting to sleep through so I guess he started getting enough sleep at night. He sleeps roughly 7-7, he's very tired by 4pm and will sleep in the car on a longish journey.

Xmasbaby11 · 29/03/2015 18:39

Dd was About 1yo, but probably napped a couple of times a week for an hour. She slept 12 hours a night and just had great stamina!

scrivette · 29/03/2015 18:46

DS will be 4 in June and still needs an afternoon nap but I don't always allow it as he goes to bed too late if he does.

SingSongSlummy · 29/03/2015 18:58

DD2 3.4 still naps every day and I now wake her after an hour, otherwise she would sleep all afternoon. She also has 12/13 sleep every night. DD1 stopped around 3.

BinToHellAndBack · 29/03/2015 19:13

DS stopped napping over a few weeks at around 20 months. It seemed early compared to what everyone else around us was doing, but was the right thing for him (he slept loads better at night and went to sleep much quicker as a result).

Don't worry too much about what anyone else thinks/did though, only you know your toddler well enough to judge.

Mandatorymongoose · 29/03/2015 20:16

18 months, if not a bit before really. DS was always rubbish at daytime sleeping but he sleeps pretty well at night.

Dutch1e · 29/03/2015 20:29

DD was 4 and gave up naps with bad grace. DS was barely 20 months (I think. Too sleep deprived to remember)

LST · 29/03/2015 20:29

Ds1 is 3y 5m and hasn't napped since about 18 months. Ds2 is 15 months and has 1 morning nap. If he slept after 12pm he'd never sleep at night.

DustyCropHopper · 29/03/2015 20:33

Ds1 was about 2.10 when he stopped, ds2 would only nap in the buggy or the car from about 20 months and dd2 is 3.11 and still will nap in the day, not everyday, but at least 2 or 3 times a week.

SpicedGingerTea · 29/03/2015 20:52

My DS is 2 next week and can still sleep 2+ hours during the day. I find on the days he doesn't get this he is much harder to get to sleep in the evening.

I plan to keep up with it as long as he needs it!

redexpat · 29/03/2015 21:17

DS is 3 and naps on Tuesdays and Thursdays at nursery (they go to gym/swimming) and if we have a busy mornign out at the weekend.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 29/03/2015 21:19

At two years old, they pretty much stopped. It was a sad time. I was so pro-nap as well. Sigh. As always DS has had different ideas to me.

BakingBunty · 29/03/2015 21:25

DS is 3.7, still naps when he can.

toomuchtooold · 29/03/2015 21:27

DTs are 3 in 3 weeks, still napping 1.5h/day, but TBH it's only working because they're in nursery for long days and we don't get them in bed till about half 8 these days.

When they were about 2.5, DT2 went through a phase of not going off to sleep easily in the evening and we thought about cutting out the naps but she settled down again. If you want to keep it going, have a go, it might be that she starts wanting to nap again.

silverglitterpisser · 29/03/2015 21:50

Dts stopped at dead on 2. They r now 2.6 n very rarely have a sleep in the day unless it's after about 3pm n they're in the car. Was gutted at first but they r happy without, don't seem to get overtired or anything n it actually makes things easier as we don't have to work round nap time for trips out , appointments etc.

Charlotte3333 · 29/03/2015 21:52

DS2 was 4 in January and still naps in the afternoon. It doesn't affect his bedtime, though, so we let him get on with it.

DS1 is 9 and falls asleep in the car if the journey is over 30 minutes. No idea how; cars are clearly magical.

LadyGregory · 29/03/2015 22:08

DS stopped at 2 years 4 months. It was accidental, as he still seemed tired enough to need a nap, but we were away and the nap just didn't happen a couple of times because he was out of the house having fun - and, from having been a child who could easily take an hour and a half to get to sleep at night, he turned into one that took five minutes.

CalleighDoodle · 29/03/2015 22:12

Ds is 3.2 and naps but then wont go to bed until 9!

Gooseysgirl · 29/03/2015 22:13

DD started dropping her nap at 2.5 yrs. By Christmas she was only taking a nap on the days she went to nursery but we found she was not sleeping well at night. After Christmas we dropped the nap completely, she gets cranky towards the end of the day but bedtime has greatly improved and sleep is longer and better overnight. She has just turned 3.

Purplepoodle · 29/03/2015 22:35

I had to restart ds2 (4) naps as he was so miserable after a morning at nursery. Most days he just sleeps on sofa as nods off during a dvd - otherwise he wouldn't nap if I didn't put dvd on.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 29/03/2015 22:38

Around 12 months. Then when she started nursery aged 2.4, she started having a short nap on nursery days, with all the other DCs.

TinyTearsFirstLove · 29/03/2015 23:05

Just before 2yrs (but then napped most afternoons when at nursery at age 4) and just before 3 years. I have a friend that still got her ds to nap at 5 years.

maddening · 29/03/2015 23:11

Around 2.5yrs

sweetcheeks2014 · 29/03/2015 23:12

Thanks so much everyone. It is clear to me that it is very varied!! I will continue to put DD down for now as she is not upset by it and plays with her soft toys/ book in her cot. Perhaps she will start to sleep again (would be blissful for me) and if not ahh well she is just doing to drop it and that is that.

I really appreciate you all taking the time to reply.
