To not want a bigger TV?

HellKitty · 29/03/2015 09:08

We have a 50".
He wants a 60 or 65 inch - I forget.
He thinks we're going to Currys today. His friend has 'kindly' offered to take the 'diddy' TV off us. Eh?!

So please persuade me this is a great idea or help me with excuses as I'm stuck.

He's not EA or controlling or anything, he just wants a bigger telly! He's even tried telling me that my 'Great British Bore-off' and 'Great British sewing shite' (his words) would look much better.

Tbf, bake off and sewing bee are better on bigger tellies as you can see in more detail GrinHowever, can you afford it, is your tv stand big/strong enough and will giant tv take over living room?

AlternativeTentacles · 29/03/2015 09:23

I never get this. you have 50 inches of shite being beamed into your living room, and he wants more?

EponasWildDaughter · 29/03/2015 09:26

Depends a lot on the size of the room. We're lucky enough to have a big enough room to take a ginormous telly, but i would hate to be sat 3 inches from a screen like that.

I admit i have been converted by DH, i love our bigg'un Grin

AwakeCantSleep · 29/03/2015 09:28

YANBU. You have a 50 inch TV and he wants bigger?? How large is your living room? How old is the existing TV? Aren't these things expensive?

My TV is 32 inch and the perfect size for my (small) lounge. I have a lot of art on the walls and don't want the the telly taking over the room.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 29/03/2015 09:29

I love a big telly, ours is small compared to your 50", only 42" .

If you can afford it
If your room is big enough.

Why not?

Wow. That is big!

We had an 18 inch tv and I was really resistant to the idea of a bigger one. Our in-laws bought us a 24 inch one anyway for Christmas as they thought it would be nice for the dc and dh and they felt sorry for them having a mean old mother/wife who didn't want a massive great eye looming over our front room.

To be utterly clear, we live in a tiny 2 up 2 down cottage so we're clearly talking about different proportions. I still wouldn't want a bigger television however.

What would piss me off most though, is the fact that you've made your feelings clear and not only has he not listened, he's taken steps to make changes to what is presumably your joint home regardless of your feelings.

A 5 ft television? Sweet Moses.

HellKitty · 29/03/2015 09:31

The room isn't that big, I just remember upgrading from a 40 to a 50 was a bit of a shocker. I just don't want to be feeling seasick if I watch something. It's bad enough that he upgraded the surround sound so any horror films are doubly scary if there are any bumps Confused

If you say no will he ignore your opinion?

catg83 · 29/03/2015 09:35

We recently got bought (by PIL for DP) a bigger TV. I was massively anti it but it has been really good. Clearer picture, films look more cinematic, subtitles more readable. I love it BUT DP did persuade FIL to not get the massive one he wanted to get us. I don't know numbers but we went a size down as any bigger would have been very dominant I think. We have ours mounted on the wall so when it is off you don't notice it very much. x

Andrewofgg · 29/03/2015 09:35

I always said that adding screens to the wireless would not turn out well . . .

Mrsjayy · 29/03/2015 09:35

I put my foot down at the 50 inch think ours is 42 just mention to your husband you read something about men wanting things bigger to compensate will dent his machoness and save you a trip to curry. 60 is like a cinema screen my neighbour has 1 I can watch his telly from my living room

liveloveluggage · 29/03/2015 09:38

My dh loves anything techy, TV the bigger the better. I think deep down I think a big TV is a bit common, I want it hidden away in a corner so I can pretend I mainly listen to radio 4 or read something improving.

BooChunky · 29/03/2015 09:39

We have a 50 inch and I would definitely get a bigger one (but can't justify the expense!)

As others have said though it depends how large the room is.

hellospring · 29/03/2015 09:40

I want a bigger tv - I could watch it without my glasses then!

EmmaLL25 · 29/03/2015 09:40

I think it's weird when people on TV have bigger heads than people watching. We have tiny TV and I get freaked out when I visit folk with giant TVs and these huge heads loom over you.

EstRusMum · 29/03/2015 09:43

Mine is 32" and I can't imagine what would 65" telly look like. I suppose like 4 of mine?Confused

Grantaire · 29/03/2015 09:44

I think if you have a cinema room or a couple of front/sitting/lounge type rooms, then a bigger television is less of a problem.

One of my main objections to DH and his desire for a big television is that we have one family room. It is the only room we can all be in and sit comfortably. Our kitchen is teeny tiny and apart from that it's a bathroom or bedrooms. ATM, if somebody is watching television, the other people in the room can also read or chat or knit or whatever. A massive television would take over the whole room. It becomes the television room.

I'm not a snob about television itself. I LOVE the television. Only as part of our lives though not the shadow we live in.

Theoretician · 29/03/2015 09:58

Be glad he isn't shopping in Curry's equivalent in Singapore. You know how shops sometimes give away a smaller second TV free if you buy the flagship product? In Singapore a few weeks ago I saw an offer in which the free "small" TV was 60 inches.

Can't remember which TV it came with, but the biggest one in the shop was 98 inches. So a picture about 8 feet wide, and four feet high.

Mrsjayy · 29/03/2015 10:03

Good god where would you put an 8 ft tv

Theoretician · 29/03/2015 10:03

As others have said though it depends how large the room is

Perhaps, to people who care what the room looks like.

To people who care what the TV looks like, the size of a TV depends on viewing distance, not room size. For HD TV the viewing distance should be about twice the width of the TV. So if you view from 8 feet, a 50 inch TV would be appropriate, from 12 feet a 72 inch would be about right. This does mean you can get away with a smaller TV if you arrange for the sofa to be closer to the screen.

VolumniaDedlock · 29/03/2015 10:07

blimey.
Our new 32" looks massive to me - we just upgraded from an old 24" CRT as DD1 wanted a games console for her last birthday.

I'm sure a huge telly is ace when it's on, especially for sport, but it's a big ole hole of blackness when it's off.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 29/03/2015 10:09

We only have 40 inches and it's fine, I wouldn't want any bigger as it would dominate the room.

If you can afford it then why not.

Theoretician · 29/03/2015 10:11

Good god where would you put an 8 ft tv

I like a big TV, but it was a bit absurd. I imagined building a house with a separate cinema room to accommodate it.

It was free-standing on its own stand which lifted the bottom of the screen only 2-3 feet off the floor, and I actually wondered if it would fit in my flat without hitting the ceiling, before working out that it would just. (I have 7.5-8 foot high ceilings.) I reckon I could get it into the living room via the full-height sliding glass door to the garden, as long as I got a crane to get it over the garden wall, or removed a small tree that would get in the way of it being carried through the gate. (I wasn't seriously contemplating it, just think about the logistics.)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/03/2015 10:13

I view from about 8 feet and I still think our 37 inch TV is a bit too big, the room is only 12' square and the telly looks huge in it.
