To not want a bigger TV?

HellKitty · 29/03/2015 09:08

We have a 50".
He wants a 60 or 65 inch - I forget.
He thinks we're going to Currys today. His friend has 'kindly' offered to take the 'diddy' TV off us. Eh?!

So please persuade me this is a great idea or help me with excuses as I'm stuck.

He's not EA or controlling or anything, he just wants a bigger telly! He's even tried telling me that my 'Great British Bore-off' and 'Great British sewing shite' (his words) would look much better.

55" here and proud!
DH also talks about getting a bigger one, 5" would make all the difference apparently.
But we watch a lot of TV, movies and play Xbox one on it. I love it.
I would happily get a bigger one, but not until this one is a bit older.

carabos · 29/03/2015 10:19

I always wonder about other MNers' massive houses when I read threads about massive tellies. We live in what I think is a fairly standard 3 bed terrace, about 100 years old. Our living room is approx 12ft by 14 ft and we have a 28in tv. The room wouldn't take anything larger. Just how big are these rooms that people are putting 50in tvs into Hmm?.

Lemondrizzletwunt · 29/03/2015 10:23

Oh fuck no!

There is a is,ute,y no reason to get a bigger TV if you already have a huge one to start with, not to mention the notion that you'll give your existing one away for free?

If I were in your situation, I would be unleashing my wrath and putting my foot down so hard he'd be scared to ask again!

Lemondrizzletwunt · 29/03/2015 10:24

*absolutely

meglet · 29/03/2015 10:29

carabos same here. What I would consider a normal size living room and a 30" screen. anything else would be a joke. I hadn't noticed British houses getting bigger, so why would you need a giant tv screen Confused .

meglet · 29/03/2015 10:30

gah, auto text 'I have what I would consider.......'

CaTsMaMmA · 29/03/2015 10:33

does he really want three foot wide monkey bollocks on the wall of his sitting room??

cos that's what will happen for the next David Attenborough series!

peggyundercrackers · 29/03/2015 10:38

We should have got a bigger telly when we got a new one a couple of years ago - we went for 46". We have a big room though and sit quite far away from the TV, the one we have looks quite small in the corner. Room is 31ft x 17ft...

peggyundercrackers · 29/03/2015 10:44

Lemondrizzle really? I wonder what would be said about a man unleashing his wrath and putting his foot down so hard his OH would be scared to speak. I'm guessing the words abusive Fucker would be mentioned along the way.

Spermysextowel · 29/03/2015 10:53

I used an online calculator to see what size was best (BIL just said a TV can never be too big) & got a 50". We do keep the living-room curtains closed tho a) because of the direction of the sun & b) because I have an irrational sense of shame...

Sazzle41 · 29/03/2015 11:02

If you have separate TV room like my partner fair enough go fo mahoosive boy toy/gadget man styee . But i have lived in sucession of 1bed flats and more than 32inch would look ridiculous.

Also, i cant help hearing my v snooty mother when i see larger TV's. There would be much bosom hoiking about 'more money than sense' but she was a snooty tech phobe who had to be talked into a microwave & a video when they first came out. I've noticed posh people I work for all have a small TV, propped up on books - and they listen to Radio 4 rather than watchTV. Makes my trash TV (Bounty Hunter/Lizard Lick Towing) habit look bad!

Theoretician · 29/03/2015 11:11

This is the best image I could find to give a sense of scale for a 98" TV. (Preview is showing nothing so I hope this actually posts.)

To not want a bigger TV?
formerbabe · 29/03/2015 11:20

Anything 50inches or more is ridiculous and common.

Fairylea · 29/03/2015 11:24

We have a 32 one and I can't imagine having anything larger than that. It would totally overpower the room....!

Lemondrizzletwunt · 29/03/2015 11:24

Sorry Peggy it was supposed to be tongue in cheek...

gamerchick · 29/03/2015 11:28

We have a 50 and I love it but I would go bigger for xbox alone though.

No way would I be letting any helpful friend take it away though if I did upsize... canny crack that Hmm

Thclockstrucktwo · 29/03/2015 11:31

How do you measure how big it is? I just asked DH and he said ours is either 21 or 24 inch (12 foot square room).
All I want it to do is show my favourite shows without mid season breaks and shit Grin. Now that would be a perfect telly.

gamerchick · 29/03/2015 11:31

I did chortle at 'giant heads' it's so true Grin

Spermysextowel · 29/03/2015 11:34

They're measured diagonally.

Feminine · 29/03/2015 11:35

Funny to read this thread today.
We have just 'upgraded' to a 48 inch, from a 22.
Oh. My. Goodness.
It is massive, especially as our living room is if average size.
My decorating style is all cottage - y. l now, have the equivalent of a big black bin bag arrogantly sitting there.
Apparently, it is the perfect size for our viewing... We don't have to gather round the small screen anymore.
It does sound nicer though and l imagine films will be more enjoyable.
Noticing another negative (as l type)
All my things, now look like dolls house accessories! Grin

HellKitty · 29/03/2015 11:37

I'm a bit gobsmacked at it being 5' I hadn't thought of it that way! We do watch a lot of films...and we are renting so although we have an open plan room at the moment it looks like when we buy (hopefully this year) the sitting room will have to be massive!

He's on his way to pick up the works van to cart it home. He did admit to being a proper nobhead this morning though Grin

Spermysextowel · 29/03/2015 11:43

I'd like one where the screen is white when the TV is off. I think I'll have to invent one & then go on Dragons' Den.

HellKitty · 29/03/2015 11:44

Gamerchick, the friend has had a pretty shit time recently. If we sold 50" we'd only get about £150 or less anyway. And it was a free replacement for my old Sony Bravia which went tits up 5 years ago and was only a 32" so upgrading to the 50" took some getting used to.

CoolCadbury · 29/03/2015 11:45

I think it's weird when people on TV have bigger heads than people watching. We have tiny TV and I get freaked out when I visit folk with giant TVs and these huge heads loom over you.

Grin Grin Grin cheered me up no end.

HellKitty · 29/03/2015 11:55

I'm going to be seeing massive heads and wrinkles in glorious HD aren't I Confused
