To think parents should take responsibility if children chase sheep on country walk?

Recently went for a country walk (public right of way across farmland) with SIL, my 2 nieces, and another couple and their 3 kids. Crossing a sheep-field, the 5 kids started chasing sheep, trying to 'round them up' in a flock like they'd seen sheepdogs do on TV. I asked SIL if we should stop them, she said no they always do this it's not doing any harm. Other couple agreed and said the kids are having fun, let them play with the sheep. I was a bit concerned as one child was carrying a stick and waving it around, but respected the parents' decision.
Shortly afterwards an irate farmer marched towards us shouting and swearing! She was really aggressive and had a snarling dog (off the lead), dog was circling us but not approaching. For about 5 minutes mins she yelled and swore at the kids for chasing her sheep. All 3 parents then turned on their kids and told them off, lying that they'd been telling them to stop but they'd disobeyed! (They hadn't told them to stop at any point). My niece burst into tears and hid behind me and I lost my temper with farmer for swearing at kids, told her to back off and stop shouting, and to get dog under control. The dad of one of other kids then threatened to kick the dog if it came near his kids, and after some more shouting we decided to go back way we'd come. She shouted abuse after us until we were out of sight!

I'm annoyed with other parents for letting their kids chase sheep then lying about trying to stop them! Also with farmer for being so intimidating and rude. SIL says we should just have apologised and carried on walking. AIBU?

Alright alright, lots of other people are saying 'you must be townies'!! Not just me! Hmm

BrassicaBabe · 26/03/2015 18:42

Let children chase my sheep and I'd have sworn at you too. And I'm naice Grin

LittleBairn · 26/03/2015 18:42

How thick do people have to be not to realise that this fucking distressing to sheep! I don't blame the farmer for giving you all a bollocking you all deserved it.

Koalafications · 26/03/2015 18:44

Oh sorry, I wasn't having a go at you! Blush promise.

Biggles398 · 26/03/2015 18:44

I can't add much else. The kids shouldn't have been chasing the (most probably heavily pregnant) sheep, the adults should have stopped them from going anywhere near the sheep, and I'd put money on the fact that the sheepdog wouldn't have hurt any of you. And unless the footpath went directly where the sheep happened to be, you should have stuck to the path.
But I am also amazed why kids would WANT to chase sheep or think it was acceptable!?

BloodyAwfulPoet · 26/03/2015 18:45

dogs are routinely shot on sight for less. I'd be fucking livid if I were the farmer. I can hardly fathom the idiot that stands by and watches this, and THEN has the cheek to rant at the farmer.

I used to bottle feed orphan lambs at a nearby farm. it was my first job. you have no idea how hard that woman works for an absolute pittance. all the ewes on 'my' farm had to be artificially inseminated at massive expense in an effort to boost yields. every loss hits her pocket hard.

fucking townies who treat the countryside as if it's nothing more than a pretty landscape to amble through when it's actually a productive, working environment... grr.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/03/2015 18:45

chasing sheep may cause the sheep to miscarry and thus lose the farmer her living for the year.

KatherinaMinola · 26/03/2015 18:46

You were a bunch of idiots. And you personally WBU in not stopping the children - you "respected the parents' decision" to let the children worry the sheep???!!

I think you should stick to walks in town.

lithewire · 26/03/2015 18:46

YABU. It's lambing time. The sheep can get stressed out and miscarry so it's not only a risk to their health but a cost to the farmer.

Shockers · 26/03/2015 18:46

I hate seeing children chase birds too. Why do people think it's acceptable to allow their children to tease living creatures?

Humansatnav · 26/03/2015 18:49

Yabu, have none of you the sense you were born with !

BreeVDKamp · 26/03/2015 18:49

Long day koala, I'm sorry! Blush

KidLorneRoll · 26/03/2015 18:49

Yes. You were unreasonable and behaved fucking appallingly by the sounds of it.

Koalafications · 26/03/2015 18:49

! Smile

OodlesofBoodles · 26/03/2015 18:50

You need better friends and a better sense of what is right and wrong.

TinLizzie · 26/03/2015 18:51

OP, please stay out of the countryside in future, and go shopping instead. This behaviour was utterly irresponsible and disrespectful. You (all) owe that farmer a huge apology.

TinLizzie · 26/03/2015 18:52

Oh, and the dog was circling you because you needed rounding up!

SisterMoonshine · 26/03/2015 18:53

I think, putting yourself in the farmer's positon, it would be terribly hard to retain any sense of calm when pregnant sheep are being terrorised and chased.
Idiots!

PrettyFeet · 26/03/2015 18:54

I wonder what the farmer has in mind for the sheep Grin

BloodyAwfulPoet · 26/03/2015 18:54

ugh I just re-read.

her dog was off the lead!? on her land? call the police!

sounds like all your children should have been on leads.

YvesJutteau · 26/03/2015 18:54

You (as a group) walked into the farmer's field and terrorised his sheep -- could well have caused some of them to miscarry, in fact. As others have said, if a dog had done what the children did it would have been shot on sight no matter how innocent its intentions. I'm not surprised you got yelled at.

YANBU to be annoyed with the other parents, but YABU to be annoyed with the farmer. As a group you deserved everything you got.

YvesJutteau · 26/03/2015 18:55

HER sheep

Boofy27 · 26/03/2015 18:55

I think these families need to stay away from this farmer's land. I imagine after having her stock worried and her dog threatened, she'll have a gun with her next time.

Sallygoroundthemoon · 26/03/2015 18:56

YWBVU. You all sound ghastly and self centred. You should have said something OP. This was the farmer's land and livelihood and she had every right to shout. Please leave the countryside to people who understand how to behave.

BaronessEllaSaturday · 26/03/2015 18:57

she'll be hoping to make money from the prettyfeet something that these idiots put at risk, tell me how would you feel if you worked hard all year then someone came along and destroyed it so you wouldn't get paid.
