Yikes! I'm going to get a new one ripped here, but this has been bugging me of late.

Our planet isn't in a particularly marvelous state. Overpopulation is a very real problem. We are responsible for the legacy we leave our children and surely part of loving them is to be concerned for their future quality of life on this planet.

I know there are a lot of people with larger families on MN and I need to understand why, in full knowledge of the facts, people continue to have so many children? Just read a thread on facebook where a woman was proudly stating she has 11! 11 ffs!

I don't go for the argument about some having only one or two so it cancels out and I also don't believe in replacing our ageing population problem with an even bigger one.

So what am I missing here? Do people just not really give a shit? Does biology take over?

I have 1 btw.

that would be delightful idunit Smile

at least we're cognisant of our deficient psyches. its becoming apparent that we're an increasingly rare breed

Superexcited · 26/03/2015 22:18

People continually totally ignoring statistical facts (links posted by myself and mrsd) in favour of continually bleating on about overpopulation.
Average number of children = 1.8.
Regardless of what people think about environmental impact the fact remains that 1.8 children per family is not going to be enough to economically sustain our ageing population.
Are we wanting people to work until they are 95 years old or alternatively just refuse medical treatment to everyone over thr age of 70 because we don't have enough tax payers to fund them?
What will happen economically if everyone limits themselves to one child per family?

UnderEstherMate · 26/03/2015 22:19

Well, to be fair JackShot you've more or less told everyone else that your. 1 is better than their 4+. Should they go and tell their squads that?

the eternal buggering courtesy of satans pork sword

christ... what a note to go to bed on!

JackShit · 26/03/2015 22:19

Super totally prepared to be shown othrrwise, but do we not then replace a large ageing population with an even bigger one?

idiuntno57 · 26/03/2015 22:20

jackshit yes why not? Does she listen to you anyway?

lemonade woop woop

Nb why can't we all just celebrate what is rather than go around criticising it as a way of justifying our own stance? Guilty as the next person but perhaps there would be no AIBU and the world would be a better place

UnderEstherMate · 26/03/2015 22:20

Sorry, typo. I mean JackShit of course.

lemonade30 · 26/03/2015 22:21

whoop jackshit you hit the bingo.
not only a mother of one but an elderly primgravida to boot.

why are you bothering to converse with us rabble. surely you're too busy polishing your halo/a turd to fanny around with all of this?

JackShit · 26/03/2015 22:21

idiunt now you are being very unkind Sad

idiuntno57 · 26/03/2015 22:22

jackshit and you are not?

JackShit · 26/03/2015 22:23

Bloody hell Lemonade, I can't help those circumstances!

OP posts:
idiuntno57 · 26/03/2015 22:25

jackshit think about it for a moment. You are condemning others for something you didn't/couldn't do. There is a massive element of post rationalisation which is completely understandable but doesn't give you the fast track to the moral high ground.

JackShit · 26/03/2015 22:25

I think 'Does she listen to you anyway' is and irrelevant and unpleasant thing to say.

A bit too far. But this is MN!

I was aware my view was simplistic and having no knowledge of having a large family I wanted to hear some other views...

yeah well some of us have ovaries with a volition all their own but you don't seem to give a shit so I'm extending you the same courtesy.

fair is after all, fair.

FYI I'm an only child and it is indescribably shit

ThroughThickandThin · 26/03/2015 22:26

That's a crazy argument - we have a large aging population so let's have more and more kids to look after them. Oh wait then what happens? Next generation has to have more and more to look after them. A pyramid that ever needs to grow.

ArcheryAnnie · 26/03/2015 22:27

MrsDeVere so if you aren't going to be perfect, you shouldn't try to be good, is that it? Because I think that way of thinking is ridiculous.

JackShit · 26/03/2015 22:27

That's what I mean Through

anyway goodnight, may God bless you, and may the enduring, unbridled ejaculate of your husbands loins keep you safe from the pork sword of Satan til morning.

idiuntno57 · 26/03/2015 22:31

and having no knowledge of having a large family I wanted to hear some other views...

Do you know what I just don't believe you. I think you wanted to use it as a platform to justify your own position.

JackShit · 26/03/2015 22:32

Some serious viciousness here.

Lemonade thanks for making me cry, well done you.

YANBU. Can't believe that someone compared it to animals having large litters! Animals do not use the NHS, schools, disposable nappies, oil, petrol, etc.

myredcardigan · 26/03/2015 22:35

The point is that we can no more all have 1 than all have 4. So we all have however many we think we can manage both financially and emotionally and all is well (until about 50yrs from now when we don't have enough adults of working age paying at to support the ageing population)
